1.12.2 is still the old way, having the sky in the mcpatcher folder. Also, make sure you have optifine installed (of course) and not using any of the latest shaders. Most of the new updated shaders overwrite custom skies. Other things then include having render distance greater than "8", making sure custom skies option is turned on, and—I've been told by people that sometimes reinstalling optifine fixes their custom skies issues.

This is a pretty cool seed that starts you off right in a birch forest, but right next to a HUGE hole in the ground! Seriously, you're only like one block away from falling in! If you jump in, you will see it is the access point for a nice underground ravine! Pretty cool!

This is a pretty cool seed that starts you off in a taiga hills biome with foxes, but more interestingly east (and a little south) at coordinates x: 1700 z: 1000 is an ice berg mushroom island! I've never found one until now, and it's super cool!
