    posted a message on Commonwealth of Concordus [1.7.2] - ★ DEMOCRACY ★ EQUALITY ★ LIBERTY ★

In the Commonwealth of Concordus, you'll find a place that rejects the idea that rank and hierarchy are what make a community tick. Instead, you'll discover a community that embraces the ideas and values of its people. Here, authority rests with the people, instead of a select few of rank who may have done nothing more than buy their way into power.

In the Commonwealth, citizens aim to enlighten each other, create a sense of camaraderie, and provide for a Minecraft experience that is truly social.

An initiative among friends in June 2010, the Minecraft democratic movement began as the Commune of the Proletariat, a small band of comrades on a roleplay server. After dissolving along with the host server, some of the core group organized the larger Communal State of Minecraft.

The Second Commune was founded on February 28, 2011 with the first elections being held two weeks later. For months the Commune flourished and held six successful elections for its moderators and administrators - the first for a survival server in Minecraft.

In its wake, the Commune left a ratified index of codified laws, a system of governance determined by a constitution, and one of the first successful centrally-planned finite economies.

The Commune create a unique community of individuals committed more than just buildings, resources, or points - they were wholly invested with their responsibility and sense of purpose in creating a better place for everyone. Today, almost four years later, the people of Concordus carry the torch of those few revolutionary players who decided enough was enough - they reserved the right to organize and fight for a better Minecraft community at-large.

Concordus is governed by its constitution. Guiding it are three central tenets held sacred to every Concordusian.

I Tenet: Individuals of the Commonwealth shall assemble themselves into a generalized congress compassing all. The persons of the Commonwealth shall use this assembly to assert their direct and supreme executive control of the affairs of the whole

What it means: It is a core belief of citizens here that their ability to organize a system by which the means of free and fair vote govern their community.

II Tenet: Freedom of expression and speech, in which that do not harm the general security of the individuals of the Commonwealth, shall not be limited nor discouraged among persons of assume authority. This embodies the basic right of liberty, that the people of Concordus are at their own free will

What it means: You, as a citizen of the Commonwealth, have the free will to do as you like as long as it does not harm the community at large.

III Tenet: Persons of authority may be held in contempt of the whole, and the general assembly of the Commonwealth has the right to to determine its leadership by means of free and fair vote. This assembly also has the responsibility to self-regulate and ensure the stability of the state

What it means: Citizens have the right to remove moderators and administrators who aren't fit for the job. Likewise, the responsibility to keep order falls upon yourselves, not anyone else. Don't believe that only a person of rank is the only person who can make a difference.

The General Assembly is the supreme authority in the Commonwealth. The Assembly is made up of every citizens of Concordus, and here they deliberate on the affairs of the server and effectively legislate actions and elect moderators.

Anyone may propose an action, a resolution, or law that can be debated and voted on by the rest of the Assembly.

Actions that require at least 50%:
    • General laws, actions, and resolutions (most decisions)
    • Elections of moderators and administrators

Actions that require at least 67%:
    • Amending the constitution
    • Recall of an elected official
    • Creation of designated officers of the Assembly
    • Ejection of an individual from the server
    • Gag orders

The powers of the General Assembly and the officers they elect are enumerated in the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Concordus. Full text can be found here:

Because of the nature of Minecraft servers, a basic structure of authority is maintained strictly in a moderating fashion. Chosen democratically, moderators are elected on a monthly basis by the General Assembly with a resolution determining how many moderators to elect.

Moderators are charged with enforcing the resolutions and laws of the Assembly, as well as preserving the integrity of the Tenets. They gain no more decision making abilities than anyone else, and cannot assume authority over Congress.

Server administrators strictly only maintain the server, and cannot exercise their in-game powers in a constitutional fashion. The owner shall retain their role permanently due to legal obligations on ownership.
