I'm concerned that the system Notch has in mind will not allow for everyone to get in to modding.
His solution at the moment is to give people who request a license the source code and let them play around with it any way they want, this is good for large mod teams and experienced modders. However he can't give the source code to everyone who requests it, which means first time modders and people who are looking to learn will not have any access to modding beyond decompiling and editing obfuscated class files, which is very limiting.

If he wants to keep the license plan he should at least make a decent API for people can't get the license, something that does a lot but not everything. Otherwise this will become a very closed off modding system, and I for one will be very upset with Notch.

This would be an excellent solution. Notch's wire update got me interested in logic wiring again and now I would hate to see it require so much space to make simple gates.
Also I hope that some of the more extreme elements of the no logic wiring crowd cool down a little, some people are acting like it is satanic.

Now that is interesting, how did you test that? I should probably run both my computers through that test and see what comes up.

A temporary work around is to download Firefox for wine (I got mine through wine tricks) and then install the Windows Java plugin for Firefox. You will have to play it in full screen mode for the mouse to be grabbed properly, and I have not tested it outside of a virtual desktop.
Far from a permanent solution but it is a way to try out the newest updates.

Sorry I have not responded yet, I have been distracted. The JRE on my Ubuntu box is exactly the same as my main computer, OpenJDK version 6b18-1.8-1 (technically on Ubuntu it seems to be 6b18-1.8-0ubuntu1). If anything it might be the fact that I have never run minecraft on that computer before, could some old file not removed in the update be messing things up?

Also, are you guys using multiple core processors? I built that computer that can run minecraft pretty cheaply, so it has a single core processor.

Strange, I wonder why it is my 32-bit Ubuntu box can play it... Also is there a reason for fixing those messages?

I am having the same problem using 64-bit Debian Squeeze with IcedTea instead of the Sun Java plugin. My Java console also has the "CORE PROFILE: false" and "COMPATIBILITY PROFILE: false" messages, in addition to the several /dev/input/ messages. The problem seems only to occur when the level generator starts up and after that there is no other Java console output.
I am using Firefox but I also tried to generate a new world in Google Chrome and got the same results. I have also tried the Sun Java plugin but nothing changed.

    UPDATE:
Infdev seems to be working fine on my 32-bit Ubuntu box, so this might only affect 64-bit.
