I don't think you can really disagree that it's my least favourite :P. You just feel differently.
In order of my personal preference:
Super Mario Kart SNES
Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart 8
Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart Super Circuit
Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart Double Dash
7 and 8 quickly ousted the N64 version for me once I played them. The SNES Version is my favourite probably partly nostalgia (It was one of the first games I bought with my own money). To me it also feels the "fastest"; 150cc is really a test of reflexes, especially on courses like Rainbow Road. I don't even notice a speed difference in Mario Kart 64.
On a side note, I've never understood why people call it a "Blue Shell" when it is clearly a Spiny Shell.
Returning to the Gamecube, the DOL-001 is preferred to the DOL-101. The DOL-101 removes the Digital AV output. Digital AV is the best output method available for the gamecube, even though the cables are pricey.
You really know your stuff. Why do you not like the DS version? It has a great roster, great maps (Waluigi Pinball!!), and it's just fantastic. I've never played Mario Kart 7, but I have played 8. Why is 7 better than 8?
I'm gonna assume you meant companion. I meant that as it compliments either pc or the other consoles so well. You have a pc to play third party games at a higher res and framerate, and then your WiiU/Wii/GameCube for Nintendo games.
You have to understand though. I think it's a good thing, I would hate for the WiiU to be the same thing as an Xbox One or PS4. It's it's own thing. It's a great companion.
It's sturdy as hell. It can survive a tv falling on it.
The games just worked. No going through loops just to play with your friends, just shove Smash Bros or Mario Kart in and you're done.
It plays games, it's not some multimedia box that can be replaced by a PC. It had Double Dash, Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, WindWaker, and many other amazing pieces of heaven.
It's pure gaming bliss, that's what it is. It even came in purple.

I have to disagree with you about Double Dash, It's probably my favorite after the DS version and I love the 2 player per kart mechanic.

Lucky! I'm lost mine quite a few years ago. It's no problem as they're like $20 at my local flea market.

The Xbox 360 is a great example of not being tough. Remember red ring?
