They aren't despawning, they aren't overcrowded and pushing each other out. It's just a glitch in the game. Fence corners are the worst. I've seen sheep walk through fences. I've seen them walking ON fences. Pigs too. I have the least amount of trouble with chickens, when they used to be the worst. I think it's because I now keep them inside the barn.

Which points to a solution: Walls. Either keep them in pits or keep them in barns. And make sure they aren't overcrowded.

I think you need more than a 2x2 area. I think (but am not certain) that you need a 4x4 area with the saplings in the middle.

posted a message on THE NO WOOD CHALLENGE
I don't understand these challenges at all. I don't understand the point. What is the goal? To survive one day? To survive ten days? To get to The End?

This one in particular is bizarre. Without wood you're hosed. No mining, no tools. You've told us where a village is, so you could just go and live in their village and eat their crops. But you wouldn't be able to do much of anything else.

Do people actually do these challenges? Anyone?

I've got 2 full stacks of diamonds just from one 128 x 128 branch mine. You have to branch out at level 11. You can find some diamonds below and some above, but level 11-12 is the biggest concentration.

I only play vanilla. I tried a texture pack, but went back to vanilla. I don't see anything wrong with vanilla and I refuse to be embarrassed about it.

For a tutorial you want some thing pretty basic. That's the topic of this thread, tutorials.

posted a message on What Would you do if Minecraft Shut Down?
The game still works without the Minecraft servers. Unplug your network and try playing it. It works. You probably can't do a new installation, but other than that single player mode is unaffected. Multiplayer mode is only affected insomuch as you use Minecraft Realms.

I build in a creative world, just to checkout ideas and stuff. When I get a house I like that fits the biome I go back to my survival world and recreate it.

But it's only clear that "they don't want to touch it" right now. But for sure, they are thinking of ways of maximizing their return on investment, which means changes. If they weren't they would never have become Microsoft to begin with. Business 101.

Off topic, but I'll respond anyway. There's no way that Minecraft the game is worth 2.4 billion dollars. You can't recoup that from direct sales of the game. No way, no how. It's clear to me that Microsoft planned for cross-licensing and merchandise. We've already seen this with announcements for a movie, an adventure game, and a Simpson's tie-in. Probably other stuff I missed as I don't track game news. The big question is whether they are going to kill the goose that lays golden eggs?

I don't think so. The era of Ballmer is over. However, there are two games here: the single player game and the server game. I can imagine them leveraging the server game for subscriptions or micropayments, but I still think it's doubtful. No game on Earth makes much money from either. Messing around with the single player game is problematic as well. It's the foundation for everything, and screw it up and you lose that 2.4 billion. I expect some polishing, but not much more than that. Microsoft is too smart for that.

Contrary to Hollywood myth, corporations aren't in the business of losing money on evil villain schemes. That doesn't mean they can't be stupid (cf. Nokia), but the odds of them taking Minecraft and destroying it are remote. There will be a change in the future roadmap, but since there really wasn't a roadmap in place anyway, it doesn't mean it's doomed.

My main concern is that they mainstream it too much.

then could you prove proof that 80% of the community is not laggy? i will not dismiss his theory until YOU proved enough proof to prove that only a small amount is lagging....

The burden of proof is always on the claimant. I'm not claiming any numbers, but you are.
