    Lag??

Uhm, I don't think you read my post carefully. I was talking about terrain problems in SINGLE player.

However, I have noticed some slowdowns in single player as well. Could that really cause this?

I don't know if this occurred in an earlier version at all, but I am seeing a lot of problems with the terrain generation that I hadn't seen before some of the latest updates.

I took a screenshot of a mountain with a sheer chunky face. The pic illustrates what I am trying to say better.

This is occurring in single player with version 1.3_01.

Heth, I need you to take me off the Whitelist. After having my humble home looted and destroyed along with the entire island I had it on I have decided to move on.

Thanks for letting me play on there though. I appreciate it.

Reason for joining: I don't care so much for cluttered landscapes that other servers have, and your landscape looks largely intact and unexplored. Not to mention I really think the mods you have added will enhance the experience.

My absolute favorite thing to do in Minecraft though is explore. Most likely the edges of the map will continue to expand with me around . . . assuming I'm not lost in an underground cavern.

My second more favorite thing to do is build small projects. I love to make towers to floating islands, and glass covered ocean dwellings.

I can't wait to hear back, and I hope to be seeing you soon.

    Thanks

posted a message on Expanding on the lower temperature biome
Sometimes the threads don't highlight these particular aspects of their threads.

    Icebergs
These are mentioned a few places, but I haven't found a topic specific thread on it per se.
Basically, when you get a large enough body of water generated, and the temperature is low enough then you get icebergs in the water.

Deeper water may be necessary before this is possible.

. . . and, if Notch could add movement to them it would be interesting.

    Ice caves
Most likely encountered in conjunction with glaciers. Flowing river water would quickly carve out these little caverns made of ice.

I'm not sure how transparent ice is, but sunlight should penetrate the ice to a certain depth.

If you do an image search for ice caves you'll get the idea . . . or watch Man vs Wild.

I just think it would be really cool to run across some of these features in a low temperature environment.

posted a message on If you craft a Portal
Just to make things easy I am going to assume a 1 to 100 ratio for distance in the "Hell World".

    Ok, so I craft two portals . . .

and decide to place them right next to each other (inside the Hell Dimension).

Where would those portals end up in the Primary Dimension?

    1) Each portal exits in a very precise and predictable location 100 meters away (based on a grid).

    2) Each portal exit is randomly placed within 50 meters of a precise and logical point. (based on a grid again)

(Idea 2 could scale infinitely so half-steps are somewhat irrelevant.)

    3) Each portal takes me to a completely random location which may have no relation to distance or direction in the Hell Dimension.

Anyway, these are just some thoughts.

posted a message on Expanding Underground Space - A solution to some problems.
Well if you have enough time to dig five miles in game, be my guest man. I can't say I would have that kind of time.

. . . and why would the game have to load all the chunks leading to the surface? Wouldn't it just keep track of the chunks you passed through?

EDIT: . . . and given thecraww's and mystify's idea Notch may be able to bring back the high huge floating islands . . . given infinite sky chunks.

Although lighting may have to be changed so that ground level doesn't simply become one huge shadow after loading the chunks with these islands.

posted a message on Floating Island World/Dimension
    Floating Island World or Dimension

Apparently this was only possible in an older version of Minecraft. However I would seriously would like to play in a multi-level floating island world. I understand that, currently, I can build my own islands, but that doesn’t come close to the sense of discovery and wonderment of having a map like the one in the video below.

    Floating Island video:

NOTE: I realize that a floating island biome may be implemented. If this biome merely contains floating islands placed as in the current build then my idea differs in a significant enough way that, I feel, it warrants mention separately.

    Floating Island Biome:
    http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1016&t=50181&p=825182&hilit=islands#p825182

What I would like to add/see:

    - Single islands large enough to contain their own seas or lava fields.

    - Mountain chains on islands large enough to have several caves/dungeons (as the current build).

(Maybe): A way to grab resources without them falling into oblivion (or, at least a method one can use to build on the underside of a block when necessary . . . perhaps from a ladder while "sneaking").

(Maybe): Make the floating island world a dimension like the “Hell dimension” mentioned in the Halloween update (. . . possibly allowing access to the player by building up into the air).

(Maybe): Individual island movement (just like tectonic plates of the real world . . . possibly on a 30 day cycle or something). This would make island hopping more dynamic and challenging . . . but it would also be insanely taxing . . . and possibly difficult to program.

    The problems:

    - The day/night cycle would be screwed up and/or look funny when transitioning (and I’m not so sure the current build can handle an omni-directional setup as the sun circles the islands).
(. . . it would be interesting to see daylight coming from below however.)

    - Both sand and gravel fall when disturbed making both resources more difficult to acquire.

    - Transportation from one island to another is far more difficult (boats become nearly worthless).

    - I’m not sure how “deep” the current build can go to create a dense enough, multi-level floating island chain(s).

    - I’m not sure if the current build would support a floating island network large enough to provide the resources necessary to a player (as floating islands tend to be resource poor).

NOTE: This wouldn’t be for everyone so some kind of GUI with control parameters for the created world would have to exist (if the island world is a “normal” world setup).

(Information provided because I don’t want to repeat what has already been mentioned.)

posted a message on I believe I've solved the "Limited Ore" problem
While I don't necessarily agree with this idea as a component of the basic suvival game type I do see the potential for an exciting minecraftian verses race.

    Picture this:

You have two teams in different locations (2v2, 3v3).

The first day, nothing happens, but when night falls both teams witness a meteor streaking through the night sky to strike some far off (yet equidistant) location.

The race starts as soon as the meteorite has landed.

The team who mines the most of the meteorite wins (always an odd number of ore chunks in the meteorite).

To give some added difficulty, the meteorite should bury itself in the rock, or in lava (otherwise teams would just huff it to the location).

Perhaps mobs and spawners should spawn, or be attracted to the meteor site.

. . . on second thought, I may not have fleshed out this idea as much as I thought, but it's an idea. What do you think?

posted a message on Rope Ladders
    Hey Malice,

I have an idea that may make things easier . . . or more complex, depending how you look at it.

Let us say we have this cliff:

    :White: :White: :White:
    [] :White: :White:
    [] [] :White:
    [] [] :White:
    [] [] :White:
    [] [] :White:
    [] [] :White:
    . . . ect;

However, you have a stack of rope ladders you have been working on.

So you get them out and place one on the top edge.

The game would then take all the rope ladders in that equipped stack and place them one after another down into the darkness.

. . . and if your rope ladder is too long the remaining rope ladders are waiting for you at the bottom.

I hope this idea makes sense.

posted a message on Rope Ladders
I agree with everything accept what rope should be made out of.

Given that rope is made out of a non-animal fiber why not just require it to use reeds. Once cultivated you would have plenty . . . once you find some.

I do agree on the placement of the recipe though.
