There is muttering from behind the van. Buck approaches the circle of people eating.
"Time to move out." Buck announces.
Everyone nods; packing up the lawn chairs & coolers. The fire is put out & the men head to the military truck.
"Well, time to go." Helen says; standing & throwing the paper plate and plastic fork she used for eating to the grass.
"Bye then." Jesse says still sitting.
Helen looks down; sighs, her face looks conflicted. She takes a step forward, turning to the truck. She turns back, looking down at Jesse who casually looks off in the distance.
"Do... Do you wanna come with us?" She asks shyly.
"No, I'm a loner." Jesse says softly.
"Are- are you sure?" She asks, stepping towards him.
"Yeah." Jesse says, turning his head to her.
In the distance; someone calls for Helen.
"Go on then." Jesse says smiling.
Helen turns back to the truck.
"Hang on, I'm doing something!" She shouts back to the man standing outside the truck.
"Hurry up, day's breaking!" He shouts back.
"Please; come with us." She says crouching down next to him.
He laughs, twisting a blade of grass between his fingers.
"Alright." He says.
Helen smiles slightly.
"Good, we need more good looking people anyway." She says playfully.
"Really; I thought you were enough for your group." Jesse responds; standing up now.
She blushes a little & turns back to the truck.
"Hey, I've found someone!" Helen shouts to Buck.
"What?" Buck says; approaching Helen & Jesse.
Buck stands before Jesse & Helen, staring at Jesse's blank expression.
"And just who are you?" He asks, putting his hands on his sides.
"This is Jesse." Helen responds for him.
"Well then Jesse, my name's B-
"Buck, yes I know." Jesse says with a witty smile.
Buck smiles & extends his hand for a handshake. Jesse shakes his hand.
"Nice to meet someone who looks like he can handle himself." Buck says.
Jesse nods in agreement.
"So, you lookin to join my group are you?" Buck asks.
"Yep." Jesse says casually.
"Well, looks like your in." Buck says with a deceptive smile.
"Cool." Jesse responds smoothly.
"Come on, I'll introduce you to my group." Buck says; turning to the truck & advancing towards it.
Jesse follows; Helen at his side.
"I thought you didn't shake hands." She says.
"Trying to get on his good side." Jesse responds.
"So... your intimidated by him." She asks.
"Not in the slightest. He's just some soldier who spews lies." Jesse says coolly.
"No he's-
"He's a murderer & villain. I've dealt with his kind before."
"He does what's best for the group." Helen defends.
"Is allowing his men to rape women while he watches, for the best?"
Helen thinks back on that night. Buck claimed in private that he was intimidated by those men, they would've all killed him if he intervened.
"How- how did you know?" She says; shocked.
"I've been following your group for a while now." He responds.
Tears form in Helen's eyes when she thinks back on the night.
1 Week Before the Outbreak, Jesse Daniels, Seattle,
The contact was sitting across the coffee shop; drinking a cup of coffee. Jesse approaches the man, clutching the concealedDesert Eagle beneath his jacket. The contact looks up, he was a short, balding man wearing round glasses. He was by no means intimidating.
"Jesse." The man says; standing & extending his hand.
Jesse shakes his hand.
"Bill." Jesse says with a smile.
Jesse takes a seat across from Bill.
"It's been a long time." Bill says smiling.
"Yes it has." Responds Jesse; nodding.
"So... How's it going, got any info on them?" Asks Bill.
"Bill, I'm not here for that." Jesse says.
"Oh. I thought-
"Nope, I'm here for friendly reasons." Jesse says with a smile.
"This is surprising." Bill says, taking a drink from his coffee.
"Yeah, well, change in lifestyle, you know."
"Bullsh*t." Bill says quietly.
"You & I both know what your here for." Bill says, leaning forward.
There's a slight pause.
"Found them in Iowa, sources placed them there, they have no idea."
Bill takes another drink from his coffee.
"I need you to call them up. Tell them to meet up at a certain place. I'll show up & kill them."
Bill nods; processing it all.
"Okay, but Jesse, these people have-
"I don't need a sob story, they killed my parents, all I've thought about doing since I was fifteen was slicing they're throats open."
Bill frowns.
"Thanks, now I've lost my appetite." Bill says, setting down his muffin.
The sun begins to fall over the land, the sky gets significantly darker. Picking up his brisk walk; Jesse advances; machete in his left hand & a silenced Desert Eagle in his right. The birds chirp softly in the distance. Jesse sneaks behind a broken down car, occasionally peering over the hood to the group before him. He listens to the shocked mutters of several of them. A large man with an eye patch stands before them, talking to them. Jesse is intrigued by the group. They seem to be well armed; having a large military truck & a van, including several armed survivors. Jesse knew who they were. They were Raiders, & the man before them was Buck. Jesse had run into small groups further East, mainly in New York.
Jesse spots a red haired woman amoungst the group; she wears a military uniform. Maybe she had info on the current status of the U.S. Army. Jesse checks his gun, a bullet is in the gun. He tightens his grasp of his machete & waits for everyone to disperse. Jesse eye's the Red head, watching her every movement before revealing himself from behind the car. He quietly approaches the Red head, sneaking past several burly men. He notices that they have set up some kind of dinning circle, but the Red head has excluded herself from them. She sits on the grass on the side of the road, behind a large van. Jesse steps around the van.
"So..." Jesse says calmly.
The Red head sits still; eating some food. There's a man nearby, but he is approaching a large white van. The woman seems to be in tears.
"What?" She asks, sobbing.
"Well, what's up?" Jesse responds; jokingly.
"W- what's up? What do you mean, What's Up? Nothing's up, this isn't before this is- She looks up at Jesse & looks shocked; stunned by this unknown man before her. "Who, who are you?!" She says loudly. "Jesse." Jesse responds with a faint smile.
The woman still looks shocked, gripping the handle of her pistol.
"Yeah, I wouldn't do that." Jesse says; taking a seat beside her. "What- wha... what, I." The woman says; flustered.
Jesse laughs.
"Calm down; I'm a survivor, like you." Jesse says. "Calm down? I don't have to calm down! Your a potential threat. Why should I be calm." She says, frowning. "Because... I said so." Jesse says smoothly.
Jesse knew her type; rough, cold, but soft, breakable.
"Oh?" She says; shocked. "So now your in charge." She strikes at Jesse sharply. "That is up to you." Jesse says playfully. "Oh, so now I'm in charge?" She responds playfully. "No... I wouldn't let you." "So basically your in charge the whole time." She says. "I really don't care. Now, what's your name." Jesse says directly. "Why the hell should I tell you?" She says. "Because I said so." Jesse says firmly.
She looks into Jesse's eyes, they are striking; intimidating. This man knew how to get through to people.
"Helen... My name's Helen." She says slowly. "Nice to meet you." Jesse says; looking forward.
There is a slight pause.
"What? No handshakes." Helen asks. "I'm not into shaking hands." Jesse says mysteriously. "Right, it's the Apocalypse, no pleasantries."
Jesse looks over to Helen then smiles.
"I'm open to some pleasantries." Jesse says. "Oh?" Helen asks.
