I still like the post about someone going up to their wooden house and opening their wooden door while holding a bucket of lava.

Not judging in any way since I can easily see myself doing the same thing, I just find it funny. (Until it inevitably happens to me of course.)

Just a heads up, if a poster is repeatedly making posts that bug you then you can just ignore them. Literally.

Click on their name to go to their profile and select "Add_Foe." Their posts will no longer be visible.

    Simple enough, yeah? :iapprove:

Thats a horrible and stupid idea

I wouldn't say it's stupid, it's just the most obvious thing for a compass at first glance.

Thankfully Notch didn't go with the most obvious thing because a compass that works the same as a real world compass really would be useless in Minecraft. You can pretty quickly tell the cardinal directions just by looking at the sun/moon. (It moves enough that you can see it move and can see the direction it's going in.)

So yeah, pointing to your spawn is a great solution, but having a compass marker system (another topic suggested place-able magnets. That'd be pretty fun) would help out too for marking sites of interest.

Digging through an extra layer on the ground can start to get a bit annoying. I've actually only really played on a snow level so far, but I'm about to start a new world.

there is going to be an update tomorrow right?

Assumedly. I wouldn't expect a lot though since Notch has likely had his hands full with the server crash, account details, and setting the groundwork for his new company.

But since people are talking about what they'd like to see and not what anyone should expect to see.

    I'd like to see:

    Bed spawn points
    Fish
    An in-game clock

    That'd be nice.

Hmm... well Minecraft.net has a "forgot password" option as well that only requires username OR email, so it could be the same deal. I'd check but I haven't actually bought the game yet, so I currently have no account. :SSSS: (I am going to buy the game though. I'd say it certainly deserves my money.)

When logging in there is an option "I forgot my password"

If you select this option you put in your username and e-mail. I tried this just to see what would happen and this is what I got in my e-mail.

    Hello SirPaper

You are receiving this notification because you have (or someone pretending
to be you has) requested a new password be sent for your account on
"Minecraft Forum - Official Minecraft Forums". If you did not request this
notification then please ignore it, if you keep receiving it please contact
    the board administrator.

To use the new password you need to activate it. To do this click the link
    provided below.

    *Link removed*

If successful you will be able to login using the following password:

    *Password removed*

You can of course change this password yourself via the profile page. If
you have any difficulties please contact the board administrator.

If this is the e-mail that you got then I guess what this tells us is that you DO NOT need to know the password of someone's account or have access to said account in order to send this e-mail. You just need to know the person's username and e-mail.

And as long as the person doesn't know the password to your e-mail you should be fine.

I don't think the updates are all that terribly slow / am not particularly disgruntled.

HOWEVER: Responses like "He's just one guy!" or "Uh duh, of course it's not fast, he's doing it on his OWN!" are pretty ridiculous. Why is he only one guy? He has hundreds of thousands/millions of dollars sitting around from this game. Why is there not an entire developing and support staff? He should be able to hire at least half a dozen people and still pay for fancy servers, etc. with plenty left over.

So yes, for one guy, it is impressive... but it shouldn't be one guy in the first place. For it to still be one guy means that that one guy has some really poor business acumen, which is something to legitimately complain about, even if he is a very good programmer himself.

And complaining might actually make him a better businessman (probably not quickly even so, but it might)

You know, he hasn't actually been sitting on hordes and mounds of money for any real length of time.

One, he's not making nearly as much money from this as people would like to believe (although I imagine he is still making a fairly hefty sum).

Two, Minecraft pretty much exploded in popularity within the last week or so (I personally hadn't even paid any attention to it until just this past weekend).

This large influx of money is something new, and he's pretty much instantly putting it towards setting up a company. He is currently doing EXACTLY what you're talking about, but setting up a company takes time.

And personally I think he's showing himself to be a seriously incredible businessman. He's making more money than I could with the same project, he's actually taking an interest in the community, his game is being produced at a fairly incredible clip (despite what whiners might say), and when a disaster hit such as his servers going down he responded to it immediately.

It just sucks that the community refuses to see this and just keeps clamoring for more when more is exactly what they've been getting.

posted a message on Small rant. small rant is small.
Why do people equate more money with instantly faster updates? Money doesn't suddenly change the amount of time it takes to program. Notch is currently doing the most logical thing with the money he's gotten from this game. He's investing it into a company that in turn can help get even more done with the game. The game just got insanely popular basically overnight (I keep seeing topics about 50,000+ purchases or whatever in a 1 day period now.) He hasn't just been sitting on a horde of millions of dollars for months, this kind of large monetary influx is something that he's JUST gotten. And this money is now essentially going right back into the game.

He's not a robot. Development takes time. Instead of going hardcore spending sleepless nights straight developing he's now got the creation of a brand spankin' new company (well, brand new in that it's becoming more of a physical entity instead of a name and a computer) which takes a whole hell of a lot of time.

You get an update a week. He has opened the windows of his development to everyone else to see. Working on a game is not by any stretch of the imagination a smooth process. Bugs abound, ideas that seem great on paper have to be scrapped after their implementation in the game doesn't work out. New code has to be written. Old code has to be rewritten when the new code screws it up. It's a messy process.

Personally the fact that we're getting an update every week is amazing. The best I could have hoped for is once a month for anything decent. If the game was commercially released (for instance an MMO) I'd expect weekly bugfixes but I wouldn't expect anything significant except once in a blue moon. (And for a game still very much in development weekly bugfixes for the community, one could logically conclude, would severely limit the actual development of the game as he has to focus on minor aspects instead of the game at large)

He's in the process of starting up a company.

    His server tanked on him.

The game is still in development. Meaning he's working on THE ENTIRE GAME right now, not just a handful of updates to keep the community going. It's not like he can just snap his fingers and updates magically appear.

And seriously, what is "forever" to you? Programming takes time and he's still trying to give people something every week. Updating on a weekly basis, not every update is going to be an incredibly game-changing event, that's just not possible.

posted a message on The current death-spawn mechanic discourages exploration.
Oh wow, I completely forgot about the chest idea.

Well a chest dropped with no time limit combined with percentage drop could potentially fix the issue in general to where bed spamming is irrelevant. Maybe still start at half health to avoid dying intentionally just to quickly restore health, but yeah. I like this combination.

And I'm still wondering, if you get a time-unlimited special diamond chest, maybe it would only stick around until your next death/until you save and quit? It would still create some tension towards being careful lest you lose all of the items, but would set up a goal for the player similar to Demon's Souls death system. And it could save processing resources so you don't have diamond chests filled with loot scattered all over.

Or maybe the chest could drop in a random location. In the general area where you died, but not in the same spot necessarily. Make you search for it a bit. :tongue.gif:
