I like this idea, but I agree with the general consensus that 3 days is not enough to make a mod. A texture pack, sure, a video, sure, but mods take weeks. I suggest that if you'd really like original mods to win and not simply mods that already have quite enough popularity and could stand not being featured, you run a mod contest over the span of two weeks minimum and disqualify any that were started before the theme was announced.
I understand that a contest over two weeks could get dull since it's hard to give it continuous publicity over a larger time span, but the "mod contest" could be run at the same time as other contests, since mods are really a completely different animal than texture packs, videos, maps, and so on.
I guess what I'm trying to say here is that any mod that wins with the current system will almost certainly already be well known enough so as to make the entire thing completely redundant. You've got to announce the theme earlier (perhaps even before the previous contest ends), and disallow mods that have made unfair progress. Otherwise it's not really a contest. Contests have constraints, and allowing pre-made mods to enter is completely unfair.
I hope you don't take this the wrong way. I think this is a great way to give the people out there without much publicity some of the action (and keep something cool on the front page all the time to boot), but the way you have it set up at the moment is flawed.

I really do still want crossbows, though...

IDK, I just thought that since it's a lot more powerful, it should be harder to use. Just for balance's sake. Doesn't really matter though. Maybe stone?

Just to make it even harder to make. I mean, the actual bow isn't too difficult to craft.

It would be more difficult to make than a bow, but not that much, so what if the only real difference was less gravitational pull on the arrows? Maybe it could do a little more damage, but I'm not totally convinced. A durability meter would also be nice....
I suppose it could also have different projectiles than the bow. That might make up for more damage, if they were harder to create. Something involving steel, perhaps?
Hummm...What do you think?

= String
= Planks
PLEASE NOTE!! The following stuff is from other threads. I DO NOT want credit in the off chance that this will ever be implemented into the game! I put it in here because this is the most recent crossbow thread, and I thought it would be good to have it all in one place.

So basically you would use it in a boat, and it would make you go faster. The limit might be twice as fast as the limit is now. Obviously, the boat would still break if you were going fast, but this seems like it would be pretty useful.
Anyway, what do you guys think? :smile.gif:
EDIT
Oh, and I suppose that that wood block on the bottom could be other things too, not sure how that would affect anything though. Course, I can't pass up a pure gold oar...
