It's wonderful to see someone have an interest in actually LEARNING modding, rather than diving head first into the next big mod!
For your ores mod and such mods, keep them to yourself but have them on github.
This will make you familiar with using git and github and makes sharing your code to others very easy, which helps us help you with errors
Also when you work on a mod as a beginner don't think about balance, oh the ore is OP? who cares!
Tweaks and balancing isn't something one cares about before other things work out and play testing is about to start
Since you are starting fresh and want to actually learn programming and modding, I have great news for you!
Vswe the creator of the popular Steve's carts mod has spent the summer creating not just tutorials but actual courses which you can take for FREE to learn programming basics and minecraft modding!
Go to http://courses.vswe.se/ and start with the first course.
I promise that you will learn a lot from this and by the end of it you will not only be familar with the basics, you will have made some rather advance stuff in minecraft. Some of the things you will learn is more advance than the tutorials you find on these boards ever deal with!
2. This would be both up to you, and the specific case. This is something you can discuss with other modders when it becomes an issue!
3. Yes if you learn programming basics first and do some planning, learn some more minecraft stuff first then it's a great idea and fully possible!
4. Forge will be the easiest due to:- Active community and loads of tutorials
- Compatability and MP modding.
- The courses above uses forge.
- Does NOT take longer to learn than ML, if you know java basics
Summary:
Do vswe's courses.
http://www.minecraftforge.net/forum/index.php/board,73.0.html <-- Forge modding support.
and most importantly:
When you get an error, remember:- Share the code (Post it on pastebin or a similar paste site, with syntax highlighting! makes it EASY to read)
- Use proper variable names and method names so a helper can understand the code.
- Describe what you are trying to do.
- Describe what happens instead of what you expected.
- Share the error/crash log (if any), this is vital along with code. Use a paste site as it's easier to read the post and log then!

Jojo13491 posted a message on Seeking advice, wanting to get into modding (SOLVED)I'm a "starting modder" as well.Posted in: Modification Development
I've recently finished my firts mod that adds 1 ore,3 items one of them food,2 crafting recipes and 1 smelting recipe, and also the food item gives you an effect of 3 diffrent lvl 1 potions that was the hard thing to do lol, every thing with forge and eclipse.
I have few tips for you as a starter to another.
1.Dont be afraid to ask for help in coding from the community here.
2.Watch youtube for tutorials I can recommend few people my self.
3.Use Eclipse as IDE and make sure line numbers are shown as it makes every thing easier.
4.There are only 2 types of modding 1 forge the other modloader, forge is more advanced but I started with it as its much more fun and understandable for me at least, then modloader, and not to mention that modloader only excepts item id's up to 256 thats why it sucks, and you cant play this on multiplayer, most of the people I know use forge as its, just better.
Sorry for my english btw -

With all the new features announced for 1.8, I'm starting to feel that minecraft is straying away from its core. Sure, all these new features are fantastic for those that only play alone, but in my opinion, the most fun in minecraft is derived from joining a server and playing with friends. In addition, the simplicity of the game also adds to the charm; if you envision something, you can build it. Already we're seeing redstone and pistons adding a whole new level of complication, which, while great for gimmicky contraptions, takes away a lot of the feel of the game. Adding npc villages, strongholds, and what I presume to be a hunger bar will certainly nullify the building aspect, be a huge distraction on SMP for anyone that just wants to build, and eventually, turn minecraft into a mining-based fps/rpg.
Not the most eloquent argument, but I hope you guys will get what I'm saying.
Minecraft as it stands now, is building or sitting in your house.
Most every 12 year old plays theirs on peaceful (princess)...
So I gotta ask, what is the core of Minecraft? Sit and Build or Build and Sit? - To post a comment, please login.

I want to mod minecraft. I think it would be fun, and further my knowledge since I am going to be studying programming. Now, I know this is a step-by-step process and that everyone learns differently.
What I am seeking is advice for;
1) I am going to be looking at tutorials and stuff like that and I want to practice first with an Ores mod (Woohooo, another one! yeah I know...). So, I wanted to ask: should I keep it to myself? or should I at least release it to the WIP Forums so I can get feedback? (Like: "Add more ores" "Add less ores" "Make it more balanced, they are too overpowered" "Make it more efficient, they are too underpowered", etc) I think this can help me in the future to listen to the community
2) On the subject of the community, once I do make a mod released (The one I want to make or the Ores mod or WHATEVER); Should I listen to the community? What I was thinking was setting up polls and asking stuff like: "Are ores too common or too far in between?" and if votes exceed 60% on one side, change it. What do you guys think?
3) Last note, (not as important), the mod I want to make in the future (obviously with lots of help of other people) is kind of combine the good things in minecraft with the good things in payday2 (two of my favorite games). Do you guys think it might be a good idea? Or are the 'shooters' in minecraft too much?
EDITED: 4) What do you guys suggest is easier? Normal modding? Modloader? Forge?
Thanks for reading, and thank you so much more if you reply
EDIT 2: please respond using my numbers, it helps me keep track of the questions in the different forums I asked. But if you can't, that's fine, just try to.

"A Spider Jockey is the combination of a Spider and a Skeleton riding on top. Despite the skeleton and spider being treated as separate entities in the game (if the spider is killed, the skeleton will continue to attack and move and vice versa), a spider jockey possesses the ranged arrow attack of a skeleton plus the vision, agility, and wall-climbing ability of a spider with the sum of their aggression and respective health capacities. A spider has only a 1% chance to spawn with a skeleton rider, but the rare spider jockey is one of the most dangerous enemies the player can encounter. "
