Sounds good, however Water gain/loss shouldn't be a factor to kill crops (in minecraft) since it would require a little too much of one's attention. Completely fine with age and disease tho.
What bugged me the most was the sterile dirt idea, while it would make for more realism, I can see players getting headaches from it. Why not make crops grow (way) slower, that way the only concern would be "when" instead of "whys" and "wheres".
Lastly, i don't think disease should affect the player but instead spread from plant to plant, and gradually kill the entire plantation if not taken care of. Assuming the crops would grow slower, disease would also spread in a "good" time to be fully eliminated before it kills every single plant.
I support this, even if in my opinion it needs some tweaking.
