The game will attempt to generate one vein of diamonds per chunk, but it's not bound to chunks. The world generator will randomize the placement and the vein can just as well be placed in a chunk nearby. This means that some chunks might be without any diamond veins, while another can have more than one.
I'm sure someone with World Edit can test and count the veins in a few chunks. (I'm not 100% sure about what I said above.)
I personally use a system that is very thorough and attempts to find all resources in an area. I prefer that to making longer branches on a single level. This isn't for practical or efficiency reasons, but because I think it looks cooler. These days I'm playing with BuildCraft so I try to mine out the most valuable resources (fortune 3 pick) before the Quarry destroys it.
Well, Potion of Strength doesn't really help with swimming in lava so it's important to use the different potions correctly.
The potions can give you a boost and an advantage in different situations, but you are correct to say that none of them is really required. I'm not sure you would notice a huge difference if you went mob hunting with a Strength boost for example. On the other hand we have a potion of fire resistance that give you the ability to swim in lava.
The splash potions are also fun, especially in a PvP setting, but throwing a Splash potion of Weakness on a zombie is probably a waste of resources.
I was wondering what happens if you suddenly remove the corner block under one of the groups. Do they fall? Do they spread? Do they float? Maybe you can use this behavior for something like splitting a herd. Send one group to the butcher and the rest back up to an animal farm.
How many pigs are there anyway? I suddenly realized that this might never be a real "problem" unless you spam too many spawner eggs.
You might convince me that it should be slightly easier to make a book shelf, but to claim that making a book is going to be hard is to take it too far.
This discussion is similar to other returning topics like; "it should be possible to craft Nether Brick". There will always be differences in opinion regarding how we should be able to obtain a block.
To me, the change in the recipe for a book is a very good one. Using leather for the cover feels logical and I can only ask why it wasn't like this from the start. When that is said, I've never ever seen a book shelf being built with books. The books are usually added when the book shelf has been assembled.
If you choose to make an attempt I think you'll discover that creating a small herd of about 20 cows is actually quite easy and can be done in a few Minecraft days. Considering that you also have to grow about a million sugar canes I don't think the leather requirement is going to slow you down too much.
We are all free to express our opinions, but that doesn't mean we can demand that everyone will listen or share our point of view.
I'm fairly certain that Mojang is listening and that they know there are players that are against this change. The problem is that there is probably a larger group of players that welcomes this change and share their opinion that the benefits of this change outweighs the potential problems that might arise.
A lot of things can happen in a months and I believe a lot of the players that are now against will change their mind. It might even already be the case considering the age of this thread. A lot of things has happened in a month and some of the issues we started with have been substantically reduced.
I don't quite understand what you want us to see lotlat. The image you posted shows us that your Minecraft process is using 19% of the memory given to Minecraft by the Java VM and that it has allocated 50%. Next time, try to play MInecraft an hour or two, switch between a few worlds and log on and off a few servers. Then you might start to see something happening to those numbers.
You are also showing us that you have installed OptiFine. I've never tried that myself, but it wouldn't surprise me if it had an option for removing the image we normally can see in the background of the menu screen. Maybe you should check that before blaming it on a memory leak.
To top it off, OptiFine is a mod that does things to performance, memory and CPU usage. With that alone you have sort of written yourself out of this discussion.
Minecraft is 100% a community game already. There is very little with Minecraft that didn't originate from the community. Even the game type: lego, sandbox, survival thingamajig is a result of the response from the community. If Notch had been blind he would have continued to develop Minecraft into a Roguelike game to a much larger extent than it is now, but he discovered gold and redirected his focus on what the community was asking for. A creative lego game with interesting quirks and crannies that are currently entertaining 6 million players.
To claim that Mojang doesn't listen to us is the ultimate form of ignorance.
What happens if you make holes in the corners? What if a piston removes the corner block?
It might be possible to use this in automation of animal herding. If you want to split your herd of animals in 4 groups and send 1 or 2 of them to the butcher.
If you for some reason want to avoid this from happening you need to give them more room.
it's a problem in multiplayer. The server and client isn't always in agreement of where the mobs really are so they float around and glitch through walls. Mojang is working on a fix and I've heard great things about the last snapshot.
Acctually, as far as I know from 1 and 1/2 year of minecraft. You get about the same size of veins in caves as from strip/branch mining. This leaves the only option that ores are generated after the caves as a feature to NOT destroy the veins ... You are right that you get more diamonds from branch mineing though =P Caves noramlly isnt in diamond level anyways
The game is actually converting stone into diamonds when making the veins. Meaning, that stone is needed for diamonds to form. If there is dirt, coal, gold or other things like air in the place where a diamond vein would form, then the vein will be smaller.
I understood that you weren't serious, that you tried to be cool, but even with that in mind I think what you said was so far away from any reasonable response on my comment that I have lost word and given up on this discussion.
There is a saying: "Don't change a winning team" and that applies to products as well. When something sells as well as Minecraft, you would usually not go out of your way to change everything.
There's also another saying: "Loitering is illegal". I guess that disproves that, huh!
This reply is so unbelievable that I've started to think you are just trolling me. A little bit embarrassing, knowing that I've fallen for it with head and tail. Luckily I haven't let frustration and anger get the best of me so there aren't really anything for me to be ashamed of.
There is actually one real benefit of searching in dirt and gravel vs stone and that is related to the cost of your tools. If you use a pick, you use 3 diamonds, while with a shovel you use only 1. Taking the time to clear out dirt and gravel patches will overall give you a slightly larger surplus of diamonds, than if you randomly cleared out a section of stone, but do you ever do that?
If you are exploring caves you normally just gather what you can see. Unless you actually need the dirt, you would usually don't waste the inventory space. If you are making a mine you would do so to expose blocks in a certain pattern. Removing all dirt or gravel in this setting will only cost you more durability on your tools.
Yes, I am of the opinion that the pick recipe should yield 3 picks.

You talk like that's a bad thing.

Lackluster? No
