The amount of iron and coal hasn't changed between 1.7.3 and now. I did a crude check of my old world and a new world with MCEdit and the 1.7.3 world actually had more Iron than my new world. The reason for that is probably the new ravines and mines preventing the "growth" of resources. (You need to know how Minecraft adds resources to a world to understand what I mean.). I don't think the number of caves has changed, but a new world does have more air in them. Again, probably because of ravines and mines.
Minecraft has a video option called performance. Try clicking it a few times and see how it affects your FPS. Maybe you can get 1000 fps as well. My fps easily jump from around 150 to about 500 when I change the setting to the highest setting, but it depends on many different factors. My screen resolution, the biome I'm in, if I'm under ground or not. etc etc. The demands Minecraft puts on your system can change enormously so you can't really compare your fps to that of your friends without some very strict rules as where and what you are doing.
Just a heads up. This thread is originally from June. There has been changes to trading mechanics in the last snapshots that make the entire topic less interesting. I'm primarily thinking about how you can currently use the same trade an infinite number of times as long as you stay in the trade window. That's no longer possible in the last snapshots.
I've been meaning to try out that mod. I agree, the problem is that Mojang is not very productive, and when it is, it's in the wrong direction (most of the time), so really it's hard for the game to get better.
I'm not going to dictate how you play or what you should enjoy in Minecraft, but I would like to remind you that your play style is neither the only one or unique. What Mojang does to the game is an image of the entire community and not a small group of vocal players.
I don't think you should trust the Minecraft FPS numbers when you start getting above 300-400 FPS. Then you should use a tool like Fraps instead.
Minecraft has a video option for performance that can influence FPS and I think the default value is Balanced. With that I get about 180 FPS (Fraps). If I change performance to fast it increases a lot, but it depends a great deal on what I do and where I am in Minecraft. A Jungle is very different from a small cave.
Other things to take into consideration are; your screen resolution, number of monitors, windowed mode, software running in the background. I often have youtube showing me an episode of MindCrack in full screen on my second monitor at 30 fps and that is bound to affect the FPS I get in Minecraft.
Don't you think it is kind of ridiculous that it is quite a bit harder to get leather for bookshelves to enchant effectively than it is to get diamond and obsidian to make the enchanting table?
Yes! We should make it harder to find diamonds. That way it would be more balanced.
Enchanting gives you items of a new tier. First you get diamond tools and then after some effort you get the next level in the form of a pick with an enchant. There is nothing strange with that.
This is a nice thing though. It means that we can create new villages anywhere. No need for us to transport villagers if you want to build a new village from scratch. Just cure a few of these and you are good to go. This also means it's possible to repopulate a village that has been eradicated by a zombie invasion.
It's never been very hard to make a set of stone picks and go mining. Maybe you would need a little bit more than 20 minutes before finding enough iron for your armor set, but I'm not sure how that would fix anything regarding difficulty. For that you would need a more serious revamp like the one in Terrafirmacraft.
You could ofc have a slider for the amount of iron in the world, or a slider for resources in general so that diamond and gold is lowered or increased in relative amounts., but I'm not sure if that would fix anything.
There is one part of Minecraft that is lacking and that's the relative usefulness of minecart systems in mining operations. It costs too much to build compared to the help you get from it. If minecart systems instead were almost required, then I think the current iron levels would even be too low. And it would be impossible to balance those things against the idea of "survival". A word I personally think is very misplaced on a game like Minecraft.
Survival was a word Notch added because he had plans to create a Rogue like game. Something that never happened because the game became far too popular as a lego set. Turning Minecraft into a difficult survival rpg would have killed both growth and popularity.
It's still possible to get what you seek, but you must accept that it requires modding.
And here I thought that cows didn't breed/kill themselves for you, or even grow unless you hung around near their chunks.
A note about growth. I don't think you have the same problems with entities as we have with blocks like wheat or neatherwart. Entities will have a memory of their state and will grow instantly when chunks are reloaded.
(I'm not sure why I'm so sure of this, because I've never really tested it.)
He wasn't going at your throat, he was explaining something he obviously has some knowledge about.
His choices of fairly strong words transmitted on to me. It does not surprise me that a cow hide is simply a type of leather nor that a piece of hide is far from large enough for a small tunic. It just disappoints me that instead of thinking he completely dismissed my idea as "invalid". It's not like I was asking for a tanning simulator.
The largest leather retailer in the US says that your argument is invalid. Cow hide == Leather.
Also, leather armor takes a huge amount of leather to make, considering that it is made of of several layers of hide to be of any real protection.
Hehe, I wasn't looking for realism, just an alternative to the ongoing discussion. Do you really think my idea would create that much controversy? Was it really such a bad idea? It's not that I wrote it in stone either. One leather piece could give only 4 or 2 leather patches. Why don't you use your expertise to suggest changes instead of going at my throat?
Anyway, are you an expert in wood working too? How do you turn one cubic meter of timber into 4 cubic meter of planks?

Anyway, Wulfgar992 is right. Look for help in the bukkit or tekkit forums.

What do you mean by that?
