This is a referendum of sorts for an idea for a server that has been mulling around my head, and I am just seeing if this sounds interesting or fun for anyone else. Basically I am frustrated with so many servers not being what I wanted or servers I liked and played often start reworking and becoming really bad, to the point that I don’t have enough fun to justify playing there anymore. This server would be something where you can go and play indefinitely with your friends and have fun without worry of new plug-ins ruining everything or some admin griefing your stuff with world edit and TNT.
Is there pvp? How will it work?
My idea is somewhat inspired by the world pvp system that WoW has but doesn’t use, but like most things on this server you wouldn’t have to do it. The server theme would be realistic society based (as much as the players want to do) but also have the 2 mega factions that are invading, skirmishing, or raiding each other. You could join one of those factions, through which you could either just make a small village with your friends or be a hermit, but with the protection of the faction should you be attacked, or you could be a part of the main faction helping build or raid or defend the lands and base of your faction. Of course, you could also just play not in a faction or in a small one with your friends and be outside the main theme of the server if you like the server but don’t want to do that.
Can you grief? What plug-ins would you use?
Basically the way to way to not get raided in this server is to not let them raid you. I would not put up extraneous protection plug-ins, because I don’t think that raiding or pvp is any fun when you are limited to being unable to even walk on enemy land. You should be able to attack your enemies with what ever clever or unclever way that you can, anything that they let you do anyway. The exception to this is if everyone is offline, then that faction becomes protected. (I may not do this one, but it is a idea.) There is no honor is raiding offline people.
I would use the factions plug-in or something similar, and probably MCMMO because that plug is awesome, and anti-cheat plug-ins; everyone plays fair. If I added anything more I would probably hold a vote before just shoving it in.
Will people be able to use external sources to get ingame advantages?
No. I disagree with the idea of giving people admin who don’t deserve it or giving away commands to people because of something they did outside of game. No one would have commands or advantages, and gaining them would be impossible. I do this because I have been griefed by people who abuse these powers and it is really frustrating. I am sure this has happened to other people too, and they can appreciate this.
But if you don’t make people ridiculously OP for donating, how will you get money for server hosting so you don't go broke?
This is a problem I encountered, but I thought of something that might work. Basically, I would set up an adfly and you could download a blank text document to donate teeny amounts of money which would only take ~10 seconds of time as much as you wanted to help out, and/or if you’re a kind soul you could donate to the server through normal means but there would be no reward for it. I may rethink this though.
Obvious problems that I can see with this idea:
-This idea would require a LOT of people to be any fun.
-I would likely have to pay a bunch of money for hosting as I don't see the adfly thing actually working.
Leave some feedback, but if you are just going to reiterate the third option in the poll, go ahead and don't; it isn't conscructive.
