So when you create a post for your new map MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SCREENSHOTS.
If you don't almost no one will download it. Mainly because they have no idea what to expect. Also you want to be sure that you give sufficient detail about your map. Just tell the plot line and some key features to your map.
If you do this, your map will be way above many of the ones I've seen submitted recently. Most look something along the lines of:

Personally, I don't even bat an eye when I click next. These just look like something a ten year old threw together in less than an hour and said "This is perfect! There is no way in which this can be improved."
So to answer your question: Yes minecraft custom maps are still tremendously popular. It's just been a while since a really good one has come out. It may be not be because of the map, but its how people present it. - To post a comment, please login.

So I went ahead and made a new world and started working on this map of mine. Once it was made i didn't feel like uploading it so I didn't. A year later, October of 2013 I got the same idea to make a map and well lets say it went better than expected.
I completely started from scratch and was excited to go back into this world i created. Up until now I have been working on this map and is almost near completion. The date I am planning on releasing this is sometime around May/June.
A top view of the town which Kato lives in.
Change Log / Updates
1.0.0- Forum made.
Done with 3 towns.
Texture Pack chosen (awaiting approval from Texture Pack creator).
Basic story structure complete.
1.1.0- Spawn area complete.
Sarah W.C Twin Towers complete.
More story implemented in the map.
Fountain of good fortune complete.
Tourist office complete.
Map close to BETA testing.
1.1.3- Soartex Fanver (texture pack) gave approval to this Map using its texture pack
Building on the Last town has just begun and is expected to be completed in 2 weeks time.
Teraforming the unused land is almost done. (hand-made)
1.2.0- Made an Ocean.
Working on Final Town.
Beta testers selected
Completed the story in the first two towns.
1.2.3- Finished the final town.
Ocean has been "naturalized".

True there are alot of those kind of posts, it seems like some people have forgotten how to make a custom map.
