I've probably got 30 hours of 1.9 play under my belt and most of that is PvE. My mob count is on my server is well over 100,000 . I always have my bow in the shield slot and don't need any combat advice. What I need is a sword that isn't subject to the slight server lag I get sometimes that causes me to miss hits. I actually got killed last night because I had 4 wither skeletons and a regular skeleton within a 7 block radius and the slight lag I get sometimes on my server caused me to miss a couple strikes and the cool down did the rest. Although I managed to kill all 5 of them the wither effect killed me as soon as I got the last one. I don't need any stupid advice like "you need to change your strategy" and "you should run" and " you don't go in after 4 withers and a skeleton". I love a good melee fight, it's what I play for, and if I get killed because of my lack of skill that's fine but when I'm getting killed because a tiny bit of lag changes the timing of my sword and the game has been changed where sword cool down has become the god of combat, well that's just stupid.

Can you record yourself fighting such a matchup please? Post in a thread.

Well, as a general reply to everyone, as most posts are generally going the same direction anway,

the combat system, if it's to stay, needs a LOT of work and tweaking.

I'm not really sure if "tweaking" is an appropriate word for a lot of work, but that's besides the point.

There's far too many complaints for it to be considered good.

Some people think it's 50/50 on the likes/complaints, but I feel it's more in favor of complaints.

Not all for the same aspect of the combat, but nearly all the complaints are centered around it.

Honestly, I would love the 1.9 update without the sword delay and nerfing.

The blocks, additions, and end changes are all nice.

I like the concept of of a second hand (although, outside of combat, I personally never use it out of habit of switching),

and I like the idea of shields, as blocking with the sword never really felt like it did anything.

I know technically it reduced damage slightly, but there was no animation or sound or really anything

that indicated the sword blocked something.

Although I don't like the auto-knockback blocking a zombie with the shield does to me, I can accept it.

It gives the PVPers something to do besides click click click click click and takes nothing away from survival.

The skeletons, if swords were untouched, I would think were a good change.

That adds a legitimate challenge by making the enemies require more thought.

Adding challenge by making your equipment and attacks worse was a bad way to go about it.

Baby zombies are way too hard now considering their lack of burning in the sun, their tiny hitbox, and overall speed.

They have the exact same HP as normal zombies, so with the downgraded weaponry, they are a lot harder.

I think they should have an appropriately lowered HP to match their size and difficulty of hitting.

However, getting back to the skeleton thing, perhaps the attack style of other mobs could be more unique.

This would require you to think more about fighting instead of all the challenge coming from the game mechanics.

Unique attacks from mobs would be enough of a challenge that dropping the attack speed would be useful.

Spiders jump, skeletons strafe, but what do zombies do?

Baby zombies are fast and can sometimes ride chickens, but the default zombie just walks forward.

This would allow the PVPs to still spam click, but since swords are nerfed anyway, they do less damage.

Shields are still a thing, so you still have to worry about being blocked.

Arrows have more variety now, and maybe add a headshot critical hit so there's a bonus for being a good aim.

I'm sure I'm just scratching the surface with adjustments that can be done other than

fighting more against the mechanics than the mobs.

I just feel that's what the combat system is now; it's more about fighting with the restrictions than with the enemies.

Skeletons are balanced for 1v1 you can tell from the AI so I don't believe they are completely legitimate as they can spawn in mobs.

I don't think people like you are rare at all. I know lots of people who only enjoy Vanilla. However, there are some people like me who have been playing for so long Vanilla is quite simply boring. I use mods to add the spice, the mystery, and the danger of Minecraft that I experienced when I first started playing, but I now find lacking in Vanilla.

See my above post. Let's suppose birds were added next patch. What should happen is a large variety of bird types are put in let's say a dozen to ffifteen birds at least...

Mojang would currently however have all this marketing about one tiny bird and call it the "Bird Update!" ...and add 2 birds only.

That's just because minecraft gets boring for most people after a while, guess you're just really old school.

Imagine playing for 6 years straight and only being able to use 3 types of wood for the first 4 years or so, and only having rock substances like stone and cobblestone for the first 3 or so years. Imagine your only metals being gold and iron. It's just insane. Minecraft is supposed to be real life, but recreated in simple coding which turns into blocks, and it allows people to build whatever they want without having to do architecture or spending millions of dollars on workers.

Imagine waking up one day, and the entire planet is make up of cobblestone, oak, birch, spruce, sand, dirt, bricks, wool, etc.

The reason mods exist, is to make minecraft more alive, and add more realism and creativity to it. Imagine the things you could create in the RR3 modpack, as opposed to vanilla minecraft.

With vanilla minecraft all you could make is a makeshift generator and rocket out of wool and stained clay, and pretend that, that pig you keep pulling around with you on a lead is some type of magical pokemon. But with mods you can actually have all those things for real. And after knowing that, it's really no surprise that players like you are getting more and more rare.

I contend it's boring precisely because the updates add as little as possible and the mojang developers have treated it like a steam greenlight game since launch. There is more to do with this but I won't comment.

Or you can play it smart and not run in a straight direction and/or block with a shield right before they shoot, not forever.
Skeletons are easy if you know what to do.

No they aren't easy the developers specifically improved their ai to make it so that they're hard.

Well skeletons are balanced for 1v1 now and can shoot past shield edges. If you meet 2 skeletons you are almost certain to die because the knockbacks can stop you moving. If you try and eat while they shoot you, you will die.

So I've been trying to get used to 1.9, playing it off and on. I have figured out how to use the shield against the skeletons, which made things considerably easier. I can see how this would be more exciting and involving to someone who focuses on the "survival" aspect of the game. It definitely makes you think more and struggle more. IMO, Minecraft is about mining and crafting, and my problem with this update is that it over-emphasizes the combat. Especially for having so few types of enemies to combat.

I would say that most people spend the majority of their time in the overworld, which means that they fight the same 4 enemies over and over again (with the occasional Enderman or Baby Zombie). I think this is related to why so man people say that the new combat system is "boring". Call it spam-clicking if you want, but the fact is that people who have been playing since before 1.9 have learned how to effectively eliminate said enemies. By comparison, the new system seems less efficient and more cumbersome. I think it would have been different if they would had added a bunch of new enemies, because then it would have seemed like the combat change was justified. New enemies, new tactics needed. Instead it's new tactics needed to fight same old enemies.

I dunno, just rambling I guess.

    No that's a good point I agree.

Think of it this way, using the ESRB rating
Kid content: Everyone - Everyone 10+
    Teen Content: Everyone - Teen
Adult Content: Everyone - Adult Only (Yes it's a rating)

Notice the trend? They all start with the rating 'E for Everyone'.

Taking this, there really isn't things that aren't for adults, just things that aren't for kids. ;)
That's why adults can still enjoy cartoons, while mass blood, violence, abuse, nudity, etc. isn't exactly suitable for kids.

You just can't really phase out of the kiddie stuffs, but in time, you can phase into the adult stuffs.

I disagree with you here because it's missing something. Where can you get adult content? Where do you see it? That's exactly my point. Where it isn't, there can be no adluts who are adults, but only children instead..

I wonder how often petitions even work...

Anyways, I agree. Adults playing Minecraft? How revolting.

A game rated E for EVERYONE should absolutely exclude adults

    This is sarcasm, btw.

Well now that you mention this it in certain ways does because it excludes adult content. Just face it the corporate world and governments have excluded adult material across the entire world and convinced adults to behave and think like children. Mentioning that fortuitously allowed me to educate the people on this forum about their numerous limitations.

I find the banana fruit bunch pattern too obvious on the leaves and grasses, judging from the screenshots. You may want to keep it but it looks like designer cloth, rather than grass/leaves and that is off-putting.

Well, they could also add vehicles, guns, furniture. Or PSY mob dancing and singing Gagnam style. Or flying in survival (oh wait). But just because they could doesn't mean they should.

My is thematically in line with vanilla. Equating what I wrote with extreme, ridiculous examples is nonsensical and stupid.
