Why do you want to join?:Bukkit servers bore me these days and I've grown weary of their unreliability and latency in regard to updates. Last few servers I've tried have been plagued with adolescents and their rather irritating chat as well as superfluous plugins.
How often do you play?: Whenever I have the time, 1-5 hours during the work-week and 1-10 hours on weekends.
What should I know about you?: I'm a JROTC cadet, not a member of the active duty Air Force. That being said, I'm an amiable person and I have no qualm following rules.
I was under the impression that people did not like item repair. I could be wrong, although I personally still don't like it.
I was thinking that you could put a quartz crystal either with one dye or surrounded by 4 dye (above, below, left and right), producing Yellow Crystal/Quartz, Pink Crystal/Quartz and so on. They could then be placed on ceilings, walls etc. and be used as a decorative item. If I understand, they are the same size as fences, only more "crystal shaped"? And I don't have anything in mind really for the "musical properties", except for the fact that the crystal should replace redstone in the note-block recepie. It was just an idea I was tossing in the open. Perhaps a device which senses frequencies, although that might be steering more on the "mod" side.
Regarding the crystal golems, I think the idea is really cool. It's not just another golem suggestion, like "OMG DIRT GOLEM AND SAND GOLEM", but actually really fits with the environment as do the Geckos. To me, the Geckos are the perfect hostile mob, and the name Quartz Gecko sounds good . I think it would be cool if there are no golems in the caves when you enter, but as you mine crystals they "spawn" from the walls and attack, in a relatively similar way to silverfish, making their arrival somewhat unpredictable.
I think the crystal caves really belong in vanilla. It would provide new content underground without the introduction of new "ores" or without introducing new tool tiers.
EDIT: Sorry for the wall of text, but I got a possible mob suggestion: Crystal Skeletons. They would essentially be reskinned skeletons, but more resistant. It would also do more damage, due to a new item: Crystal-tipped arrows/ crystal arrows. They would be crafted by putting a quartz in the crafting grid, which would yield 1 or 2 arrow tips (whichever is more balanced), and then replace flint in the arrow recepie. They do 1 heart more of damage, but also travel a shorter distance because of their added weight.
And for the lulz, they drop crystal skulls which when picked up cause everything to crumble and a giant ball to chase you down the cave. not serious
Well thanks for the feedback. I have already added decorative quartz blocks to the OP, so check it out. I'm a bit confused with the "musical properties" you mentioned in your post, they certainly weren't in the OP. As for the Crystal Skeletons and Crystal Arrows, that seems a bit on the "mod side" as well. Arrows already do enough damage to mobs and reskinned mobs like a "fire zombie" don't really add much to the game. I'll keep the idea in consideration though.
im not exactly too excited about entire caves made of crystals, but maybe crystal veins should spawn in caves, and maybe spread like mushrooms.
not sure about what they would be used for. maybe golems could spawn near crystals, but they would be the first hostile golem. but you could make ones that serve you with crystal blocks.
To each his own I guess, but tell me, would you rather explore a cave system with a few veins of crystals in the walls or entire cave composed of crystals?
The golems will function like zombie pigmen and endermen currently, neutral unless provoked. The player only needs to break a crystal or hit the golem to irritate it.
Rainbow Crystalline Caves A player's suggestion of Rainbow Crystalline Caves on Get Satisfaction had been marked by Mojang as a "Planned" feature.[28]
Just thought you might want to see this. I have to say though that I love the new mob ideas, especially the crystal golem.
While the idea of iridescent crystal blocks is a good one, Mojang has cut ties with Get Satisfaction. This idea was submitted and tagged "planned" at the very least 1 year ago. While I don't hold any grudges against Mojang, I don't have the strongest faith in their word, considering how Notch copped out on dynamic lighting, floating islands, and fish mobs.
Absolutely love this idea. Of all the suggestions I've ever seen on the suggestions forum, this is probably in the top 10.
I love the idea of having a crystal as a new decorating block. As an interior-design-obsessed Minecrafter, wool just simply doesn't cut it these days. Plus, having a ton of dyes and nowhere to use them gives this idea new life.
Love the quartz and reinforced glass idea. I think for it to be implemented, it would have to be a shade brighter than current glass just for differentiation. Perhaps it can just be clear as opposed to the current 'glare streaks' we have now.
I really like the telescope idea. It's interesting and gives the quartz a new tool to used in.
All that being said, I honestly hate the idea of a crystal golem. Golems are so overused and oversuggested, and with something as unique and interesting as crystals, I don't think something as cliché and tired need apply. There should only be one mob added should a crystal cave be implemented, and the gecko seems like the winner here.
If this isn't implemented, you should try working on a mod. This is a phenomenal idea!
Thanks, I'll get to adding the dyed crystals to the OP right away.
As for the golems, I was dubious of them from the start. I needed a mob to stand as a guardian for the crystals, giving players a challenge. I'm a big Elder Scrolls fan, so I was envisioning something like the Frost Atronach. I'll start a poll to see if people want these golems.
1) I think that Redstone Repeaters already transmit instant signal.
2) I wouldn't like the idea of repairing items. Item repair in general is a big no on this forum.
Other than that I love it! Support! Maybe, since quartz is colourless, you could dye it to create a large variety of colored crystals. It would make for a really good decorative block. Also, maybe they could have some sort of musical properties? Like replacing the recepie for note blocks, amongst other things?
WARNING: INCOMING WALL OF TEXT
Well I'll be damned, after some testing, redstone repeaters appear to transmit an instant signal. However, I noticed that over long distance or when a great deal of repeaters are used - even when on their lowest delay setting - there is still a perceptible delay from the activation of a mechanism and the signal's terminus.
I'll think of some other redstone gizmo that could use Quartz.
Repairing tools is a "big no" on this forum? I haven't encountered any opposition on this idea until your post.
Personally I think this method of repair would fit well into Minecraft. In order to repair your non-Diamond tools more efficiently you would have to search for rare caves whose denizens aren't too keen on you taking the crystals within.
As for the colored crystals, I'll think about adding it to the OP, there has been a lot of desire for another decorative item for a long time. There have also been quite a few suggestions for such an item in this thread. If you could give me some elaboration on these crystals I would appreciate that greatly.
I've been playing Minecraft since alpha 1.2.6, needless to say that I have some experience. I'm an ROTC cadet and I've grown tired of PvP servers recently.
I LOVE this idea. Also, crystal blocks will do 1 heart of damage every half second, just how sharp crystals in caves in real life are.
Thanks for the enthusiasm, about the whole "crystal blocks will do 1 heart of damage every half second" thing, it exists!
I have here an excerpt of the OP with the damaging crystal in question. They're not going to be everywhere, this will give the player opportunity to avoid damage, instead of having to tank all of it.
Crystal Shards: A razor sharp crust of crystals that can be found growing on Crystalstone.
Properties: Non-Solid Block. Unobtainable aside from Creative mode. Will cause 1 damage (unarmored) upon contact, Quartz Geckos and Crystal Golems are immune to this damage. (Crystal Shards will not destroy items that come into contact with it).
True lol... it's hard to really add anything technologically oriented without deviating from Minecraft's theme, though. I was thinking Tesla's stuff because none of that aspect of his technology was ever actually implemented for public use... it's sort of in the 'out there' region that most people don't think about. Whether it fits with redstone or not is another issue entirely, but redstone also seems to break from the original concept Minecraft was built on.
Sorry 'bout taking so long to get back to you guys, family business to attend to. Onto the topic, The caves will have some rarity to them. I don't want players obtaining grindstones within the first 20 minutes of play, unless they're very lucky and find a Crystal Cave. I never had high hopes for the Tesla Coil idea anyways, it just didn't seem to fit right from its suggestion. I'm not going to add it to the OP, the poll results are too inconclusive.
"Quartz: Properties: Hard (can only be harvested with an Iron Pick or better) ,Colorless, Heat Resistant, Piezoelectric (produces energy when mechanically pressured)"
I think that it should also do damage to anything touching it when powered by redstone, perhaps 1-2 hearts of damage per second? It would be good for traps and mob grinders, you don't have to do anything with my idea, but just think about it.
Maybe, I think a toggle-able redstone powered Cactus like trap would be a great idea. I'll think about how such a device will be made, because quartz crystals themselves won't be able to do this.

Quartz and its dyed variants can now be crafted into decorative statues.
Please feel free to comment, critique, and make suggestions of your own!

Crystalstone has been renamed to Quartzite.
Quartz Crystals are able to be dyed.
Crystal Golems no longer drop Crystal Golem Cores. They drop Quartzite and Quartz.
Allied Crystal Golems have been removed.
Instant Redstone Repeaters have been replaced by Redstone Oscillators.
Telescope recipe has been changed and now requires four Gold Ingots and two Quartz Crystals
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, but yes I would love for you to help me make some concept models for the mobs.

Looking back at it, they kind of are. I'll reduce the damage output somewhat. Their health will remain the same, it's the same as a skeleton.
While I'm a big fan of making the player have to work harder, the recipe doesn't give the impression of a telescope.
Believe it or not, telescopes are for the most part hollow on the inside. Remove the glass and it will be fine.

Two words. Please Elaborate
But in all seriousness, what would these objects do and how would they be crafted?

Changes:
Allied Crystal Golems will now drop a portion of their crafting materials (minus the golem heart)
Binoculars have been replaced with a more fitting telescope, crafted with two Quartz and 1 Gold Ingot.
Changed the spawn locations for the structure, being able to be found underneath Deserts, Extreme Hills, and Oceans, albeit at a much lower frequency.

Hmm, I like the idea, but I fear that it might break the theme of Minecraft. I'll add a poll question to test the waters before I post in the OP.
