Bad omen isn't supposed to have any effect unless you enter a village before it wears off. (Or you remove it by drinking milk.)
I headr a rumor that having an ominous banner at your base would cause more patrols to find you but there's nothing in the Wiki about that so it's probably just random.
If that is the case I should be getting patrols all the time given that I have 4 banners on display on one wall of my base, the frequency of patrols has not increased over time so I suspect that the banners make no difference (or I have been lucky/unlucky depending on point of view).
I have a toolsmith who every day wanders off out of the village to a nearby hill and stands on the top of the hill looking out to sea and basically stays there all day ( I guess he yearns to be a sailor or something).
The village golem wanders off and down into a small cave well outside the village and even though I have built some steps to make it easier to get out stays there until I get fed up and shove him out, then repeat the next day some village guardian he is!
Put a bell near him and ring it, he should then panic and run back to the village. Long term though he may just wander off again - for some reason they seem strongly attracted to caves/holes in the terrain and one or two villagers are prone to wandering off at random.
The villager AI seems to be quite buggy - they have issues finding beds - houses can cause issue with villages trying to walk through walls and not go around to the door, in one vilage I broke some beds to move them more to the centre of the village but the villages who had claimed those beds kept returning to where the beds had been despite them not being there.
Beta 6 is the latest, I think there has been a change in who is supporting/writing the program recently - worth keeping checking this page for any new releases.
If you look in the issues tab as well there are mentions of issues with Amidst not picking up versions due to new launcher but there is a workaround mentioned.
Sticking with a medeaval theme then the ground floor would likely be stone slabs (or maybe polished granite as it would look like terracotta tiles) and upper floors wood planks (oak or spruce)
Usually not too much but in my latest world I have decided to use a half-buried desert temple as a storage/crafting/mine entrance building so that will need digging out and the terrain around it leveling. I think (although this still early stages) as the temple is not too far from the coast I might build living accomodation/library etc in another building on the coast and link the two buildings somehow so that will likely mean more terrain "improvements".
Surprised no one has mentioned signs - can be very useful as you can put a note on them with >> or << as direction pointers.
I also sometimes use redstone torches as locators as they are obviously different from standard torches and can be more easily spotted - a line of redstone torches amongst ordinary torches is a useful trick (and redstone is usually so plentiful that I have lots of it available).
Cobblestone slabs can be useful (although I tend to reserve them as path markers in the nether).
Build a room/floor over the ravine with glass blocks for the floor and use the space how you like makes for a different type of build - then light up the ravine and maybe build a staircase down to the floor of the ravine and use that as a mining area - saves a lot of digging..
These are things you should do when you are going to the nether so you don't get lost:
1. Write your portal coordinates down so you can find it.
2. Bring some materials to make an emergency portal in case you get lost.
3. Don't go too far from the portal.
4. Cheat, and get materials for a portal
I would add
5. Leave markers around the portal area - torches or jack'o'lanterns are useful as they show up from a distance
6. Use cobblestone to build a wall or shelter around the portal - more visible from distance
7. Lay a path behind you as you explore (or cobblestone pillars) or every so often leave a sign with a note on it pointing towards the portal

And the iron golem AI is even worse.

Amidst v4.3 Beta 6 works ok for me with Minecraft v1.14.3 - there is a delay when it first opens but then does load all the biome info.

I am not in a position to try it at the moment but from memory if you build two walls but they only touch at the inside corner, sort of like this
XXXXX
ooooooX
ooooooX
X=wall block o=interior floor
and leave a gap in the corner as shown and put a bed right in the corner then you can often wake up and find yourself outside the walls.

Church or Chapel
Abbey (ruined or intact)
or even a full Cathedral (in fact to be defined as a medieval city a cathedral and/or market would be essential).

Use dirt blocks as scaffolding - easy to find and easy to remove once the main build is done.
