Oh, bleep, serious?
Losing our cats and dogs wasn't bad enough?
No hurry or point to update then.
Well this only affects horses as far as I know, so you can still update and just avoid getting a horse if you want.
It may be a lead-exclusive bug as I have yet to lose a horse that was not tied to a lead. This could be purely coincidental, however.
Also, they fixed fences. So far, I have not lost an animal that was completely enclosed in fencing on all sides.

Except it's not realistic at all to swing hoes fast. They are large long-handled tools akin to a rake. The only way it makes sense for hoes to be fast is if they are small, handheld hoes, the same size as a garden spade.
A truly realistic weapons system would be based on actual weapons like spears, daggers, and maces rather than on garden tools. I know there are a lot of unrealistic things in Minecraft already so I shouldn't be surprised at what they're doing, but giving us new weapons would just be so much better than what they're doing now. Sigh

And zooming maps in.

Already proudly used for what, three days? I don't think it's too late to change.

I would rather see daggers as the "low damage but fast recharge" weapon over either hoes or shears, because they are actual weapons. I agree with Josh on the shears - you can't fight with scissors with tapered tips.
And by the way, are these miniature handheld hoes or something, because every hoe I've seen has a super long wooden handle and definitely can't be swung faster than a sword.

Yeah I realized this, haha. They have sharp edges. But not nearly as sharp as swords and not positioned in such a way that they can be used effectively in battle. They shouldn't be proposed as a viable alternative to swords.
I think that this would be a great idea. You can use a dagger in close quarters when you have a jump on someone, and spam-click them to death. But when you're fighting in the open you have to use a sword. Definitely would feel more realistic than doing it with a hoe.
Honestly, why would a hoe be faster than a sword anyway? I would think that in real life, a hoe would be much heavier and slower than a sword, unless it's a claymore or something like that. The way I understand it, swords were carefully designed to be balanced in the hand and were often very light and agile, especially the one-handed variety.

Oh, I have no doubt. You could do a lot of damage with a hoe if you had no other choice. But it still shouldn't be considered as an alternative to a sword or an axe. Neither the shovel nor the hoe have sharpened edges, at least not sharpened like an axe or sword blade. Fighting with a shovel is like trying to cut a steak with a spoon. If they're trying to develop a weapons system they should base it on actual weapons.
The Samurai didn't fight with farm tools if they could help it though.

But it seems like they could give us more options without pretending that garden tools are weapons. Spear, mace, dagger, etc. Trying to base your weapons system around a set of tools seems so contrived.

I'm OK with axes having more damage than swords because it's pretty realistic. Gimli is going to do more damage per hit than Legolas, but have a lot fewer hits. The idea of a wooden axe doing more damage than a diamond-edged sword crosses a line though.
What really bothers me, however, is that shovels and hoes are being treated like weapons at all. They don't have sharp edges. They aren't designed to kill people. Just leave them out.

Yeah, I'm sure. Were you getting the hoe in survival?
Anyways, even if you could enchant them, they still wouldn't solve getting cornered by mobs because even a diamond hoe does less damage than a wooden sword, according to the wiki.

I just tried to enchant an iron hoe on the latest snapshot using both a table and a sharpness book/anvil and neither worked.

You can't enchant hoes in survival, except for unbreaking using an anvil.

Yep, can confirm. I was cornered by pigmen in the Nether and even though I had top-tier diamond equipment I was doomed. No way to fight out; you're dead guaranteed. This would probably also happen with regular zombies.
This is something that they should definitely look at, although I wouldn't call it a big problem.

I definitely see the Wither skull grinding as a flaw in the game. It's really a shame because the game is good about grinding everywhere else. But when it comes to Wither skulls, it definitely borders on a Skinner box, pushing a lever over and over again hoping to get a treat.

Except that killing the Wither is 100x harder than killing the Dragon.
