The corner of the sand block does NOT match up with the corner of the chest.
Figure it out.
Also, there would NOT be a gap between of them if it were placed. Which leads you to believe that it is actually being held. -

Now, the sand right next to the chest could be:
1 Sand pressure plate
2 Sand half-slab
3 Just a sand block, maybe Notch was standing on another layer of blocks.
