Yes, but why only with stained clay? It would probably still look rather oddly green and frankly, nigh useless. Sure, you could have slightly better looking sticky blocks which don't bound you but why only limit it to that? It may be hard to program but Mojang aren't amateurs and should be able to pull it off.

I just picked clay because it comes in 16 colors, and has a very multipurpose muted texture. It'd look good in a moving door, a flying ship, and anything else you want to make.

I imagine they would have very little green (other than the green blocks of course). Just enough of a border so that you can tell the difference between normal hardened clay and sticky hardened clay on sight.

While it's likely that Mojang could do anything they set their minds to, I think the likelihood of something getting added goes up the easier it is to code. They have a lot of plans, and anything that would take too long, and interfere with other goals, has a good chance of being put off eternally or passed on.

Well... why not have slime be able to be placed on the side of a block, similar to item frames? And if there is this entity there, it would stick?

Being able to glue any block to any block would be better, but I'm worried if it's technically possible.

You'd have to have entities existing inside between two blocks, altering how pistons affect them, and moving with the blocks too. I'm worried that would be hard to code.

This is designed to be very little extra work for Mojang, just reusing the same slime block piston code but applying it to a different block.

Slime Blocks are awesome, but green cubes of goo don't fit every design. It'd be nice to more decorative options when it comes to sticky blocks and pistons. Here's a suggestion: Slimy Clay.

Looks like hardened clay blocks, and comes in all 16 colors, but it sticks to other blocks when moved by pistons just like slime.

The only visual difference from non-sticky clay would be a thin green square border near the edges, to show where slimy glue has been applied. Of course, you could change the 16 default textures to look like whatever you want.

You can easily do this with redstone/commandblocks.

Yes, but that requires having a command block constantly checking for a player's presence. That could contribute to lag, especially if you want a lot of portals in one place.

And command blocks can't make a portal that's visible to spectators but invisible to other players. If you wanted to release a shower of particles to mark a portal, everyone would see it.

This would be a new block that appears as a glowing swirl of light, visible only to spectators and people in creative mode. It's purpose would be to teleport any spectator that touches it to a pre-determined location.

Admins would be able to access the portal's GUI to save a destination. They'd be able to enter coordinates in any dimension or players as the teleport destination.

This would be an extremely easy way of giving spectators the power to teleport wherever you want. Just build a transportation network of portals for them to use.

It would also allow you to keep spectators out of certain areas too, if you want. A solid cube of Spectator Portals is an impassible barrier they can't get through, because it would port them elsewhere.

    Quote from Ouatcheur

I'd add them like this instead:

Redstone dust does NOT connect to gear blocks, but can be placed on top of a gear block, providing power to it, but not receiving power from it.

Gear blocks receive redstone power only if it is "directly" strong (lever, repeater, etc.), or from dust on top of them.

Gear blocks transmit redstone power like redstone dust, but only to other gear blocks, and to all redstone devices adjacent, except redstone dust. When the power is sent to another redstone gear, it is 1 less redstone power unit. (max 15, min 0).

This prevents setups made of say 1000 blocks long Gears from taking down the server with mucho lag.

So if you send max redstone power to a gear block, up to 14 other Gears could be powered.

A powered redstone Gear has a simple animated texture showing rotating gears, and small bits of hit become red like redstone dust of the same restone power level. Gear without power don't have those bits of a dull red but just dark gray.

Gears being moved can move ONLY blocks directly connected and directly adjacent. If other blocks "block" these connected-to-gears blocks movement, nothing moves, unless those blocks can also get pushed anyway by the normal piston + slimes mechanics of course.

I debated making gear blocks also transmit redstone power, but didn't include it because I was worried about messing up other mechanics (such as powering a piston you don't want to turn on yet). Those are some interesting ideas though.

As is, I wasn't imagining the gear blocks transmitting redstone power. Instead the game would just perform a check before it moves a gear block structure to see if any of them are powered. If none of them are powered, it wouldn't treat them as sticky for the movement.

Why not? Pistons fit. Dispensers fits. Powered rail fits. This is another mechanical element along those lines.

And I have nothing against slime blocks, they're great, but clockwork mechanisms do make more sense than big slime sculptures.

Here's an idea for a new block with many uses for redstoners: Gear Blocks.

A gear block would look like a cube shaped mechanical contraption, and it would have a very useful property. Powered gear blocks stick to other blocks but only when powered.

This functions identically to slime blocks, allowing you to move big structures with a single piston. However the gear blocks are only sticky if at least one gear block in the structure is currently receiving power (you don't have to power all the gear blocks, just one).

When gear blocks are not powered they would not be sticky at all, allowing you to move them apart and rearrange them with pistons. We could do all kinds of amazing things with these clockwork blocks.

posted a message on Slime Blocks Shouldn't Be Sticky When Powered By A Comparator
Slime blocks cannot be moved apart by pistons. There should be a way to do this.

I suggest that when a comparator feeds power into a slime block, the slime block temporarily stops being sticky. It won't drag blocks if moved, and won't be dragged by other slime blocks.

It would instantly regain stickiness once it stops touching a powered comparator.

It could be crafted of 8 iron ingots and 1 redstone dust.

That's a logical recipe. I wonder if it's a bit too expensive though, compared to slime. Maybe it could use less iron.

posted a message on Let Dispensers Place & Remove Slime Blocks
There's no way for pistons to move slime blocks apart from each other. It would be nice if redstoners could build machines that can do this.

I suggest allowing dispensers to place slime blocks if the space in front of them is empty, and pick up slime placed blocks and move them to their inventory. This would be an easy way of allowing machines that can break up slime block structures.

Whoops! Totally forgot. It's been ages since I crafted a compass. :P

Well, something similar would work. Iron and redstone should be involved in the recipe.
