Just delete your minecraft launcher and replace it with the one on the site that it says to use if the other doesn't work for some reason. It updates then lets you select your world. No grey screen. Although when i started i somehow backed into a wall and started suffocating. If that happens switch to peaceful so your health regenerates while you mine your way out.
