It's probably not as odd as you think. A 7-bit number can go from 0 to 128. There is most likely not a level 0. If you haven't leveled up at all, you simply don't have a level. As soon as the bar fills, you start at level 1. A 7-bit number goes from 0 to 128, so there are 129 possibilities (128 + 1, because 0 is also a possibility).
This is what I assume, because it sounds logical. I'd have to take a look at the source code to see whether this is true, or Notch is just being weird.
A 7-bit number goes between 0-127. I'd assume that level 0 would be not having a level, otherwise you'd have an extra boolean describing whether or not you have a level.
I personally think that you should be able to change modes. It allows you fly and avoid some of the most tedious aspects of Minecraft you just don't want to go through (travelling, farming obsidian for portals, etc).
It also gives the opportunity to 'cheat'. Although it is a single player game so the only person they are 'cheating' is themselves. The only difference it makes is when people show their e-penis off by going "OMFG I MAED THIS IN SURVIVAL GIEV ME MASIVE PROPS DOOD". Also 'cheating' is fun, like spamming TNT or lava on your works of art when they get boring.
For those joining the Mindblast PVP server in the future, consider applying for SpaceNazis. We are the largest faction on the server with 50 players (no idea how many are alt accounts)! We have an extensive mushroom farm to grind mushrooms (and therefore herbalism), enough diamonds so you never have to mine again and TNT is distributed based on work you have done for us and the project you wish to take up.
However, to join you must have a few qualities.
You must
Be willing to use teamspeak (you don't need to talk)
Be willing to work on the mob tower to help finish it
Be in the Aussie timezone
If you want any brownie points post anything you have made with redstone, pistons, or mob traps.
The trapdoor was a great improvement to Minecraft although there are a few new blocks and ideas that I think would be complimentary for the building of traps.
More pressure pads of different types!
Iron Trapdoors (probably been suggested many times before, and hopefully is already in development)
Trip Wire: Similar to a pressure pad, but doesn't need to be on a block, but rather between two blocks. Useful for traps inside corridors or down long pits to activate dispensers. Would need to be reset every time it was activated.
Nets: Would be made from string and wood, and would be activated by redstone. They would be toggle-able like trapdoors to be either up or down. If someone lands on an active net they will stop falling and take no damage. It would be useful to create a safety net for building or could be a trap itself.
Bucket Traps: Would be a rotating block that rotated 90 degrees every time you right clicked and you could attach a bucket to it. When the bucket trap is connected to live redstone it would pour the liquid inside the bucket in whatever direction it was facing.
I am currently building a mob tower out of dirt, cobblestone, stone and netherrack. Can mobs spawn on netherrack? A fellow builder on my SMP says otherwise but I am not so sure.
