I would laugh if this is a big troll attempt at the end of all of this.

But the likelihood of that happening is about a 1% chance.

Knowing that he actually DOES have the server makes it unlikely. But yes, that would be good, considering getting trolled isn't common for me.

Well I have narrowed it down to three people, now I'm just deciding which of them is going to get it.

Wait, is this your YellowStar server? What happened with it?

Anyways, this caught my attention quickly, obviously, because it's a free server, and who doesn't love free?

I was planning to buy a server from a provider or build a server box myself for an idea that popped up into my head. A steampunk server that didn't fall or have trouble staying up all (or most) of the time.

    - The Idea -

The idea is a steampunk server that will be well built with creative transport systems, towns, a full economy, massive machines and buildings, and a whole bunch of other stuff that will develop as the server is built. My idea is, simply put, starting out as just a new, creative, and original server that nobody else has done before. i have not yet decided on PvP, clans, factions, or anything along those lines. Just hoping to create a decent server for my favorite genre. :smile.gif:

Please note that although not everything is planned out, I do plan to have a good system for recruiting builders, admins, and regular players for this server. If I do ask for donations (with perks, of course), all of it will be for your dedicated service to the server, to keep it up and let us be on the server.

    - A Little Bit About Me -

I, obviously, love steampunk. I am a very organized person. Although I am still a student, I will find a manageable way to keep the server in shape and make sure everything runs smoothly.

I love Minecraft. When I first heard about it, I fell in love with it, and got it right when beta 1.2_2 was released. It quickly became one of my favorite games.

I have co-administrated a server before, and I think the server went really well, until the server couldn't pay for the monthly cost of the server he got. Since then, I had wanted to run a server for my own, to make it how I like it, and for others to be able to enjoy what it had to offer.

That is basicaly all i wanted to say in this application. Hope i get it, but i also want to wish good luck to the others.

I do have a question though:

What are the server's specifications? (CPU, RAM, OS, etc.)

P.S. Thanks for showing me spout last night. Really good mod/plugin :biggrin.gif:

How long have you played Minecraft?: Since Beta 1.2_2, I believe.

Have you read the rules?: Yes.

Do you plan on becoming a regular?: Yes, as long as it's up. :smile.gif:

Do you have a friend in this server?: Not that I know of, no.

One more question, though: Is there much difference in a network adapter and just connection with an Ethernet cable?

I would not suggest AMD if this is going to be 24/7. They run nearly 2x as hot and are more prone to overheating.

They do, but it's not to much of a problem, as I have done tests with an AMD before, but it takes a while for it to get bad. Also, the chassis I'll use has enough ventilation it shouldn't be a problem.

Get a $50 16GB SSD, it'll give you performance boost (especially if using lots of plugins), and the server only needs a couple gigs (including backups).

Get a AMD processor, intels are 5x the price for the same thing, I use an old Athlon for my server. Top of the line AMD 6-core precoeesors run about 200 smackeroos, and about 70-90 for some legit s**t.

DDR3 RAM all the way, get 2-4GB.

Make SURE you are running a unix-based OS ( linux ). If you run windows on this jawn you'll get one fifth the permormance you'd get with linux. ( I suggest debian )

    Remeber: GUI=crap

Thanks! I was going to buy an Intel processor, guess you just saved me some money. Also, was planning on 4GB of RAM, so I guess I'm good there. And for OS, I was going to use MineOS+, which is based around Tiny Core Linux, so everything should run fine.

HDD doesn't matter as server storage is tiny (few hundred MB at most)

CPU as long as is dual core isn't too important either unless you are talking very big server 100 people.

RaM would be most important but once you start going to 6-8 Gb of RaM it becomes very less beneficial (Assuming large server)

Upload speed is what makes or breaks your server

Thanks for the tips! What upload speed would be recommended as a minimum?

Well it is best to get an overall good server and not get one thing which is a lot better then everything else. RAM is one thing which is a ok thing to work on.

That is what i thought it would be. Also, can anybody tell me if this is a decent enough chassis? It's really small, but I only need one 5.25" bay, and I need it to fit in a smaller area. [Link]

I'm looking into investing to a cheap and simple build, but I don't know what is the most important part to run a server, the RAM, CPU, what would be a decent amount of HDD space, and what kind of case would be decent enough for it all.
