About the Mod
The Lord of the Rings Mod is a huge expansion for Minecraft that aims to add the world of Middle-earth into the game. This will include content from J. R. R. Tolkien's most famous work, The Lord of the Rings, and from other related tales such as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.
The mod has been in development since December 2012, with a great amount of planned features yet to come in the future. New updates are published frequently - usually every couple of months.
If you are interested in following the progress of the mod, go to our Facebook page, where we showcase new content for upcoming updates. You can also give feedback there, and submit suggestions. Please read the FAQ before submitting a suggestion!
The official wiki is the place to go if you want to learn about the mod and its contents, or find a server to play on. You can also post suggestions, bug reports, and discuss all sort of things on the wiki forums.
The main features in the mod so far are:
- A new Middle-earth dimension
- Over 100 new biomes, sub-biomes, and biome variants, each with their own unique structures and resources
- Biomes are generated in accordance with Tolkien's map of Middle-earth
- The mysterious, unexplored lands of Rhûn and Harad
- The ancient Pits of Utumno, a terrifying dungeon dimension full of Morgoth's evil creatures
- Hundreds of new blocks, weapons, armours, foods, and items
- People and races from the Lord of the Rings world
- An alignment system where your actions can improve or harm your reputation with many independent factions
- New gameplay elements dependent on the player's alignment: trading, unit hiring, and an expanded achievement system
- Randomly generated Mini-Quests, and the Red Book to record them
- A system of modifiers for customising and upgrading your weapons, tools, and armour
- Seamless multiplayer integration in all areas of the mod
And some of the main planned features still to come in future updates:
- Even more blocks, items, and factions from Middle-earth
- Larger, pre-written quests, ranging from minor 'side quests' to epic adventures
- New types of mini-quests
- Characters and places from the Lord of the Rings storyline
- More boss battles
- Ring-forging, siege weapons, and a 'redstone alternative' for Middle-earth
- Other realms... The Undying Lands? First Age Beleriand? Númenor?
For a more in-depth and comprehensive summary of the mod's features, please see this Mod Overview article on the mod's wiki. Also check out the Middle-earth Gameplay Guide, and the Building Tips page if you are so inclined.

Concerning Modpacks
TheAtlanticCraft's Fellowship modpack includes the Lord of the Rings Mod along with over 50 other mods, and they have dedicated public servers running the pack. The link goes to their Minecraft Forums thread which has all the links and information you should need to download and install the modpack. Please note that feedback/bug reports/other issues concerning the Fellowship modpack should be discussed on their forums and websites, and not on this forum post.
If you want to create and publish your own modpack including the mod, you don't need to ask for my permission, but you must credit me as the author of this mod and provide a link to this post. It's only fair!
(If the modpack is just for private use, i.e. it won't be posted anywhere for the public to use - such as for your own use and a small group of friends on a private server - there's no need to do that.)

My biggest pet peeve is people who leave floating trees on multiplayer servers, just take the whole darn tree and be done with it!

I'm not too good at these but it appears to me that your render distance is too high. Either lower it through the stranded options or if it won't load then open you'r .Minecraft folder, open options.txt, and change render distance to 6 chunks or lower if need be.

I don't personally have a budget laptop but in my experience of building and working on PC's and Laptops I'd recommend something with an AMD A series processor. You can generally find an A-6 (low end) laptop for around $260 or an A-10 (high end) for $350, The A-10 would be my recommendation as it has a reliable 1.8GHZ speed and integrated Radon R6 graphics that will give you a nice stable 40-60 fps in small modpacks. Newegg actually has quite a nice ASUS laptop for only $349, very nice seeing as ASUS is one of the better component manufacturers. I purchased a similar laptop (A-6) for my step father about a year ago and he gets 30-50 fps for Minecraft (yes he's hooked too) with small modpacks (50 or fewer mods).

I tend to get 80-110 fps on small packs (50 mods or less) and 70-90 on large packs. My PC's a custom build (made it myself) however it's quite old at this point being nearly 5 years old but I just don't have the funds to build a new one just now. As for a favorite brand, I have none as I'd much rather build a PC and get exactly what I want verses compromising with a pre built unit. However I will say I prefer ASUS motherboards and AMD graphics.

I'd suggest either the Portal gun (which can be comonly found in chests) or Angel Rings from Extra Utilities (which give creative mode flight).

Hardcore Questing doesn't actually add any quests it just makes it possible for pack authors to create quests, if you add it to a pre existing pack you'd need to create your own quests and system of progression. The reason I mentioned adding mods as ruing progression in HQM (Hardcore Questing Mod) packs is the authors have already chosen a path of progression based on the mods already in the pack which must be followed to advance in the quests. Wheres non HQM packs allow the player to create their own path of progression through the mods.

1. There are a few mods which tend to be in every pack like WAILA, Inventory Tweaks, and Not Enough Items which are common utility mods. Other mods depend on the type of modpack for example technical packs almost always have Buildcraft, Extra Utilities, Ender IO, and/or Big Reactors while magic packs tend to have Botania, Thaumcraft, and Witchery.
2. There are some pre built packs out for RPG like questing like Tolkin Craft for 1.7.10 but you can easily create your own pack if you wanted. Sadly there are no mods that automatically add quests, these must be created by the pack author. I'd suggest looking for packs with the Hardcore Questing Mod, these packs are full of quests created by the author and there's a lot of variety in the content.
3. most mods now don't have compatibility issues with other mods but in the rare case they do the author will mention it either on the forum post or in the notes on Curse.
4. You can easily add mods from one pack to another but in the case of questing mod packs this is discouraged as it can ruin the progression of the pack.
5. Curse.com is the best place for your mods, Curse Forge is intended mainly for experimental builds of mods on Curse.com.
As your new to modding Minecraft I'd suggest trying the pre built packs on some of the modpack launchers like Feed the Beast and ATLauncher. FTB is particularly good for questing and rpg like packs just check under "third party packs".

It's not a troll, the block is called a lectern and has the secondary function of displaying books for ease of access.

Not to sure about redstone activated cannons but you could use turrets from Open Modular Turrets. The turrets can be fully programmed and controlled with either Open Computers or Computercraft, though I'm not sure how they'd do on moving ships. You could also use QuiverBows Arms Assistant which is a small turret like robot that can be equip with QuiverBow weapons and given whitelists or blacklists. Another option is the cannon from Balkon's Weapons Mod which I know work with moving ships form Archimedes Ships and MetaWorlds. Sadly the cannons are player controlled but they're a good last resort if nothing else works.

1a) Sadly Optifine's policy forbids it to be added to public mod packs (i.e. packs made available to everyone in the community), privet packs (packs only available to a small group for their privet use) are fine.
1b) Yes. If the pack is exclusively privet you won't need to worry about gaining the mod authors permission before adding a mod to your pack.
2) Certain mods like FastCraft or Better FPS work by tweaking or outright replacing Minecrafts Graphics algorithm removing unessential assets. Optifine however simply adds more advanced control over the in game graphics settings allowing the player to adjust each individual aspect of the games graphics.
