I'm more in favour of different mobs suited uniquely to the different environments Notch has said he is going to implement. I.E. Sand-worms for the desert, wolves for the forest, sharks for the ocean.
Not a bunch of generic mobs. Bringing more generic mobs in is going to up the mob density to an intolerable point.
That said, these mobs could each be applied to different areas.
My thread on enemy mobs: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9871
One Final Point: If you're completely against airships, or whatever idea, why not have it implemented? You don't have to build an airship, just because the system is there. Heck, you can even form a club! Make it your personal vendetta to destroy all air-based transportation! Actually, that'd be pretty epic. I's like to see sub-cultures forming on mine-craft servers.
To finish off my point: Just because you don't want to use a feature doesn't mean it can't be implemented. (I fully understand this isn't applicable to all features, notably the ones that change the basic mechanics of the game).
I don't know... Everyone was talking about those teleporter things. What about making it so we can use them to generate small instanced maps, like accessing another plane, rather than teleporting somewhere on THIS map?
Intriguing and awesome idea. It's definitely a better explanation, but I'm not sure how the actual mechanic would work. I see problems with the idea, but it's DEFINITELY worth looking into.
Many would oppose this, simply because it would "make the game too easy". I think not. You're right, it would automate a repetitive and not very cognitively challenging task. Now that you have suggested this, it seems bindingly obvious to me. Kudos to you for coming up with this.
The one thing I do say is make this hard to make. Very hard. It should be on the next to top tier of the metaphorical "tech ladder". Also, there should be a need for ore input, to lay down the rails, and torch input to place torches. Something shouldn't come form nothing.
Otherwise, great idea!
Beware the haters...
Sorry, no. Besides the fact that these are from Halo, I feel that MineCraft really isn't headed in the futuristic or even modern fee direction. It's more of an alternate reality rennesaince feel.
XD
I think systems which allow you to create these things are a good idea, but there needs to be some sort of strong mechanism and explanation behind it.
Not sure. I'm too tired right now to think of one. Anyone is welcome to try and come up with a good system for it. I feel like diamonds are getting overused. We need a new precious material to make our nifty new objects.
Sure, sounds good. It'd be a good way to experience those other modes of play people have talked about. An option just to re-spawn normally, with no items should be added in this case. By re-spawning normally, as opposed to these alternate modes of re-spawn, you get sent back to the spawn point. These others rez you where you died, so you can wreak revenge on your killer!
Side-note: Enemy mobs don't attack you when you play as the undead, unless you attack them.
Making ballistae weapons has been suggested countless times, but I'm making a more in-depth guide to crafting one.
This involves the use of a extra-large crafting workbench (4 put together), and an anvil (which I think should be necessary for crafting weapons). The crafting system which I'm assuming the use of is detailed here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9338
Firstly, gather your materials:
-11 sticks (use a theoretical "next tier material" for better durability)
-8 full wood blocks (use a theoretical "next tier material" for better durability)
-23 iron ingots (use a theoretical "next tier metal" for better durability)
-4 string (use a theoretical "next tier material" for better durability)
The first thing to craft is the "bow" part of the ballista.
Use the large crafting table with sticks (s), and with string (-): (_ is an empty space)
__ss__
_s__s_
s----s
You now have a large bow type object. (Might this be used as a longbow as well?)
Next you have to make the track along which to load the spear and prime the bow.
Use the anvil to make an iron channel, with a hammer as the tool. x represents iron on the anvil. The anvil grid is 5x5 large. _ is space:
x_x__
x_x__
x_x__
_____
_____
This'll give you three channels. This is exactly how many you need, but if you made extras somehow, you could melt them down in the furnace to get the iron back.
Next assemble the trigger mechanism, again using the anvil and then the workbench. x represents iron ingots:
__x__
_xx__
x_x__
xx___
x____
That gets you four triggers.
On Workbench,
T represents trigger, s represents a stick:
___
Ts_
___
Now you have a trigger assembly. It has a wide variety of uses besides the ballista.
Now put together the main body on the large workbench. w is a wood block, T is the trigger assembly, C is an iron channel:
wCw
wCw
wCw
wTw
This is the main body of the ballista.
The last component to make is the stand.
First, hammer out an iron socket on the anvil:
xxx__
x_x__
xxx__
_____
_____
Then take the socket and four long sticks on the large workbench. Long sticks are just two normal sticks put together on the workbench. $ is the iron socket. s are the long sticks.
_s_
s$s
_s_
One stand. Stands have a wider variety of uses as well.
The final step is to put together all the components. This can be done on either the large workbench or just the workbench. M is the main body, B is the bow, S is the stand:
_B_
_M_
_S_
One deliciously deadly ballista.
The only thing left to make is ammo.
To make a spear (which is usable on its own as well), first make the point on an anvil out of iron (or a higher tier material):
_x____
xxx___
_____
_____
______
This makes two points.
Combine the tip (T) and two long sticks (S) on the workbench like so:
_T_
_S_
_S_
Spears are (obviously) stackable.
The ballista is a turret and cannot be held in the hand. It must be placed and then used statically. A system on how that works: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9740
The ballista does high damage and can be used on some vehicles as a weapon component. A good fortress defense weapon as well.
Feedback?
This has been suggested before, the most recent iteration a suggestion about whales by thecraww. Some variations on this are already used in some of the fancier servers to access other maps. I'm just throwing out a clarification about the idea.
Sub-maps would be small maps connected to larger or infinite maps. They wouldn't exist independently, but rather as a part of the main map. They wouldn't be accessible by normal means (walking). Let me throw out a few examples:
-Large Entities: If some entity was particularly large, entering it might cause you to enter a sub-map. Say you have large ship. There might be an option to enter the hold, which would be a sub-map.
-Alternate Mini-Worlds: Admit it. You've always wanted to have your own universe in which to muck around, like some minor deity. Now you can! Using the most powerful magic available to minecraftian, Qwillian Ind. has developed an object that allows you to have exactly that! You want it? Ten diamonds please.
In all seriousness, I know some people don't want an overly complex side to minecraft. They prefer the simple blue-collar working life already put in place. They don't want no newfangled al-ter-nayt re-al-ih-tees. I humbly disagree.
-Extended Locales: Much like an alternate mini-world, just more based on reality. This is a sort of "the inside of my house is bigger than its exterior" sort of thing. Again, very expensive resource wise.
-Thematic Mini-Worlds: This use has pretty much already been suggested. The idea is you could travel to a separate hell or heaven map, or the moon, or whatever people have been thinking up. I don't necessarily like those ideas in particular, but the very idea opens up some cool possibilities.
I know the ideas are clunky. Eviscerate them however you wish. Feedback?

My thread on airships/zeppelins.
I personally don't think they should be brought down by three arrows, or by one cannonball. You spend so much time making something like that, only to have it brought down by a couple n00bs who stole a guys cannon?
I'm too tired right now to lend my opinion to each and every little part of my idea, but I will try and lend my two cents on this discussion I have been so long trying to ignore.
1.Personally, the idea just doesn't good to me. Living inside a whale? Who are you, Gepetto? Blech.
2.Even Mine-Craft does have its connections to reality. A stomach is not a nice place. It's filled with digestive juices, not air. In fact, I'd say you could survive in one less time that you can survive in water.
3. Why would a whale swallow you, if not to digest you? Any carnivorous whale is going to eat you. Period. Any baleen whale isn't actually able to swallow things that large.
4.Even if this did sound good and was realistic, what would you do? Doesn't it sound kinda boring sitting in a 16^3 block space for so long? No resources, no other players, slowly going across the ocean, doing NOTHING.
On another note, though I hate the application, I tend to like the idea of sub-maps. They MAY possibly have a use in some vehicles, for customisation. Alternate realities, tiny strange worlds, where everything is upside down or made with cloth would be cool. Working at your lab, you spill two chemicals you shouldn't have... Uh-oh. Why am I suddenly surrounded by glass pyramids?
Anyway, that's all.
P.S.
Quote from Roadcrosser »
There should be a periscope to see where the whale is going and the ability to steer it. Also would be an exit hole in the middle of the ceiling and if you jump through it the whale spits you out it's hole on it's back.
Alright Kydo, I'll give in. I actually wouldn't mind a lack of the arcane, it's just a convenient explanation. I could live with a steam engine sort of thing, but it just wouldn't fit as easily in many of my suggested objects.
Hey, I want airships, which go against everything I think minecraft is right now. Don't let my stick-in-the-mud-ness stop you from doing your thing.
