What if there was an improved workbench that gave the player a 4x4 crafting area instead of the 3x3 one they get from a regular workbench? It could be made from a 3x3 square of iron blocks, and my reasoning behind it is that it could give a sort of sense of technological progression as the player lasts longer in the game, like how you get the ability to make better units and such as you progress in an RTS.
With an improved workbench new items could be added to the game for the player to craft from common materials (wood, stone, etc) that aren't supposed to be available to them early on.
Good idea? Bad idea?
Yeah, good idea, but I and a bunch of other people have suggested it already. I'd go with 5x5 or 6x6. Not 4x4. That's too small a difference. At least I know someone's on the same page as me! Here's my thread: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9338
Nice. I've made some EPIC airships (about 4 times as big as this) with cloth. I don't have any screen-shots, though. :sad.gif:
My favourite was the one I made on Spherical's server. It was made to be a passenger airship, with a three story lounge, about 5 rooms, captain's (me) quarters, a front control room, and a gondola control room. Plus engines and fins. Unfortunately someone decided to make it look like a giant ejaculating phallus. *sigh* F***ing griefers.
Sounds like a good solution to the issue of building an airship. And for my engine idea, I wanted to be able to build replicas of ships from Skies of Arcadia, a game in which the airships used engines for propulsion. Gas-bag airships resemble zeppelins and blimps, and if we are going to have those vehicles, then two different designs would be needed for blimps and airships.
Ropes? My first system doesn't work if you want customisation. I'm really not sure how to do it. I think ropes may be the only feasible way, and I'm not sure that they'll be implemented in that way.
Hah. The author is OK. Just read his last book in the Pen-dragon series. Kind of a young read for me.
I was actually thinking about some substance to replace gunpowder in TNT. I don't want gunpowder being in the game. A material like tak could be mined, but it would have to be refined through an alchemical process to gain an actual working explosive compound.
For some real reading, try Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, or the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons, or...
I'll stop now.
Nah man, read "Ender's Game" and that series, along with the Hegamony series. That's a good read.
Sorry I keep talking about books on your thread Blackwind, but...
Ender's game, that entire series is great. I never read the rest of the series on Bean, but, we'll see.
Greg Bear is an awesome SF author in general.
If you want a book that should be a picture of what minecraft should be, read China Mieville's Perdido Street Station.
I don't oppose guns because they don't fit with theme historically, or because they don't make sense with the current tech. They do on both accounts.
The fact is I just don't like the concept. I believe I don't stand alone when I say: Mine Craft is NOT an FPS. I'm not saying that guns or even one gun would make it that, but...
I don't like the idea that a person can aim, shoot, and their target will be hit. Arrows give time for a player to evade. Even crossbows won't be UN-dodge-able. Guns are too overpowered. Even if it takes a long time to reload, and they do a lot of damage, you can still aim, fire from a good distance away, reload and fire again before your enemy even knows where you are. They give the game-play a whole different feel.
To sum up my viewpoint:
It's not about theme here. It's about the game-play mechanic.

As to the first part:
YES, YES, YES!
This is exactly what I have been getting at with :"This should take a really long time to make."
I totally agree. I just hope that Notch sees at least some of the cool ideas that come out of these forums.
As for the "thought" block... meh. I'd rather see blueprints though.
Make a "door" out of gold. Get magical dimensional realm portal.
Something like that. Teleporters that can go to these realms would be cool. You can have in between realms, teleporter realms, arena realms, all sorts of realms. Although I think they should be expensive to maintain.
Maybe they aren't "real" realms. Maybe they're just sort of dream/simulation realms, where you can't carry anything in with you.
I imagine they would have to be kept small, maybe a bit smaller than the current small maps.
I absolutely love this idea, I only hope it isn't exploited as a go-and-be-antisocial thing.
Exactly. I don't think it would be an anti-social thing. They wouldn't really be a place to live. Maybe a short excursion sort of thing.
Also, what Kydo says. They really have a lot of uses.

One Final Point: If you're completely against airships, or whatever idea, why not have it implemented? You don't have to build an airship, just because the system is there. Heck, you can even form a club! Make it your personal vendetta to destroy all air-based transportation! Actually, that'd be pretty epic. I's like to see sub-cultures forming on mine-craft servers.
To finish off my point: Just because you don't want to use a feature doesn't mean it can't be implemented. (I fully understand this isn't applicable to all features, notably the ones that change the basic mechanics of the game).
Oh, why try to smooth over an argument now? It was just getting interesting.
That it is. I was actually just getting myself out of the argument, but I've changed my mind. :biggrin.gif:
I think Dragoon has a good idea (But I still like my arcane engine). The faster your airship goes, the greater the risk in using it should be. Fast airships will have to be small and thus easy to kill. Conversely, if you have a giant airship that you spent large amounts of time and resources on, armoured to the teeth and bristling with weapons, then it shouldn't be one cannon shot and you're gone. It should be able to take a beating. I think I would definitely go for a system where speed is inversely proportional to defence and larger size.
As for the actual making of the airship, I believe I have come up with a solution. The first block you must craft when making your airship is the airship block. I'm not sure how you will make this, but someone will come up with something. You build on top of the block, making sure to include all necessary systems and accessories. When done, you right click the airship crafting block and it runs a check. The block checks all the blocks connecting to it on it's top. It then converts all those blocks into an entity. If you included things to float your airship in the original design, it allows you to float your airship. If you included motors, it allows you to drive. The bigger you made it, the more defence you will have and the more motors you will need to move. Smaller airships can one motor and go at a resonable speed. A behemoth using one motor won't be able to move.
Okay look guys, while I too like the idea of being able to build anything and then fly it.
I also have to go against it cause allot of people are going to immature with what they do.
Last thing I think anyone wants to see is a flying Cock and other questionable content.
Let's just have three set vehicles, if you want maybe you can customize the vehicles colors.
Though anything that involves you building it's shape to what ever you want then no.
So in short, lets just keep things clean and formal.
I don't think anyone wants to respond to this in full because it is a tome of reference material to look through just to see the suggestion "There should be Ballistas." I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad idea, but I sure as hell am not going to read about your tiered crafting to craft individual parts to craft a Ballista.
Fair enough. I've pretty much realised that by now.

Actually, Columbus was an Italian by birth, more specifically a Genuan (from Genoa). He hired himself out to explore for Spain.
ON TOPIC: Still don't like the idea of guns.
