I do not think that Crafting should be complex just so it is complex.. i think it should get more complex as more advanced craft-able items are introduced in the game.
I agree. I just think the game should have more complex objects and will therefore need this.
@Canadian_x360a: You're going to destroy your computer? Sweet! I won't have to look at any-more posts without an actual argument posted. Or maybe you're so happy you couldn't contain your excitement and had to destroy your computer before your head blew up from the pure awesomeness streaming in through your eyes. In that case, good pre-planning! We don't want anybody's head to blow up!
These are the ones that I won't leave to interpretation:
Surface caves: Cave openings on the surface that don't look random.
Ruins: Decaying houses, stone walls, or tombs. Shouldn't be found often at all, but found in groups, to continue to give the impression of exploring a strange land.
Hot Spring: Small spring with +1 heat level (assuming a system of -1 = cold, 0 = neutral, +1 = hot). It would give off steam and be a place for finding sulphur for alchemy.
As for cacti, I'm assuming different environments will be implemented as you explore an infinite map (I.E. you travel form a forest to a grassland, to the desert, find a volcano, beyond which is a grassland and the coast, and an ocean filled with islands... you get the idea). Plateaus might be found in grasslands and deserts, pine trees found in a cold themed region, dead trees found in swamps, giant trees in forests, volcano spots in deserts, the list goes on.
These have been suggested a lot, and there are a few vocal protests against them (glances at Kydo). I guess I'm just trying to get a feeling for whether people like the idea.
If you don't know what I mean:
Components would be intermediary craft-able objects that cannot be used on their own typically, but are used as parts in more complex crafts. A current example would be a bowl. Alone it does nothing, but combining it with mushrooms gives soup.
Possible components... such a wide category. Gears, motors, wheels, Shaped Metal Parts, clockwork mechanisms, and the list goes on. Anyway, what do people think about this idea in general?
You're suggesting Ti 22 and fullerene? Seriously?
Didn't you literally just say that something was "too modern" in another thread?
Titanium is from the early 1800's, fullerene is from 1985, and what he was suggesting is from >1400's.
It seems that you're contradicting yourself.
If I said "too modern" I misspoke my own views. I don't care about modernity, but rather thematica feel. I don't think of the minecraft world as a historical one, but rather one that never existed. If alchemy was real, we very well may have had fullerene and titanium a LONG time ago. Besides, Titanium and Fullerene are arbitrary names. You might as well call them "stronger crystal" and "stronger metal".
How does the blueprint idea add unnecessary complexity? Because, as I pointed out before, there are things in the game that no one will discover on their own without a genuinely unnecessary period of trial-and-error. Also note that in the future, there will be people who DON'T know that TNT exists in the game. It is impossible to anticipate every object anyone would ever try to make, so that means that there will always be players to whom it would never occur to combine ingredients in the ways needed to make certain objects with more complex functions. This means that there must be some way to impart this knowledge to them. A walk-through demonstrating every possible crafting recipe would be tedious and impractical, and the blueprint idea takes the place of such a tutorial.
This is much like one of the major flaws of the recent Nintendo DS game Scribblenauts. This review of the game demonstrates this principle when Yahtzee was trying to spawn a big rock.
When you have a game that has objects that must be created, you have to TELL users how to create them or what they can create.

Kydo thinks the crafting system should always be as simple as it is now. He dislikes the idea of making components which are then assembled into an object. He's arguing more against that than your blueprint, but he doesn't like your blueprint because he doesn't think it's necessary for his vision of Minecraft.
Sidenote: I completely disagree with Kydo's vision of Minecraft. Blueprint sounds like a good idea.
@Qwill: Stop hallucinating: I never said a thing about ropes of any kind. I am basing any further talk on airships on your second design, as it allows for customization.
I'm sorry, I don't even know what I was talking about any more. I think I was confused when you started talking about a second design system or somesuch.

There would be two worlds in MC - World UP and World DOWN. World UP would be simply group of floating islands very high above World DOWN. World DOWN will be simply land with oceans, lakes etc. Players in World UP will use airships to travel between cities, players in World DOWN will use trains. Players would be able to fly down from World UP to World DOWN on airships and players from World DOWN would be able to build airships to fly up.
Sounds epic. A great idea. The only consideration is that the islands shouldn't cast shadows on the ground below. Possibly, the top should be a whole different map. I'm imagining the possibilities right now...
Mountains that stretch above the clods anyone?
Less Obvious Uses:
Granite and Marble -> Stronger Stone + Decoration
Steel -> Stronger Metal
Copper -> Wiring, Electricity
Titanium -> Uber-Strong Metal
Fullerene -> Diamond Cutting + Best Material
Leather -> NIce armor, that is strong and doesn't slow you down
Packed Dirt -> Stronger Dirt?
Ok. Well I've been lurking a bunch on these forums. And I keep seeing all this stuff about mine carts and tons of people mining and blah blah blah. WHAT are we going to do with all these resources? What is the POINT of having 6400 cobblestone? Other than just building huge structures? I say that most of the easy-to-get resources should be able to be crafted into nicer resources. (much like iron ingots-->iron blocks) But we need something like this for planks and cobblestone too I think. Sand goes to glass and you can never have too much of that. Maybe something for dirt too? I dunno
Hmmm...
You have a semi-point. Pretty much everything you mine can be used. If you've got stone, build your fort bigger.
However, I do think their should be "upper-tier" materials.\
My list goes --- wait a second... I'm making a thread about this!
What if there was a craftable jetpack that works like the ones in Soldat or Cave Story, where when the player is in the air, they can hold down on the jump button for a few seconds of lift?
Too much?
Yes. As in, TOO MUCH. No jet packs, no scuba gear, no winge--- ... actually, winged shoes sound epic! Just because I think they would look cool. Other than the shoes, which shouldn't allow you to fly, maybe to glide, no, none of it. Climbing shouldn't be possible. Flying should be accomplished through airships or winged mounts. As for scuba gear... that's just ridiculous. It's not modern day. Do you realise that scuba gear requires an air compressor? Do you suggest that too?

Exactly, and I agree.

Giant Trees
Overhangs
Stone Arches/ Grassy Arches
Cacti (in Deserts)
Pine Trees
Surface Caves
Ruins (very rare)
Hot Springs
I really can't think of any more. Hmmm...

Don't worry you didn't start it.
Yes, you're right, they NEED to be complex. I suggested a similar system.

And you sir are an asshole. However, nobody typically points that out. So I guess you can just shut the f*** up and take your flame elsewhere.
EDIT: This sounds like I'm agreeing. I'm not. I wouldn't call Rubs a moron.

Anyhow... I only suggest one material above diamond, fullerene. I only suggest it to have something to cut diamond with.
