they get better as you upgrade your tools. iron is a somewhat more durable than vanilla iron picks, and diamond lasts nice and long. (and if you get a crucible going, you can recycle the iron and diamond for infinite uses so long as you don't break em.)

Later on you get soulforged steel tools too, which have the combined use of two tools in one, plus the ability to guard with them. for early game its pretty much better to build with wood than stone, since stone axes have a better durability than stone picks do, and you want to save your precious iron pick for mining more iron, diamond, and other ores.

That doesn't make the wolf even more useless than vanilla though. it just means you're too useless to make use of its uses yet. :P

kidding aside, wolves may not be much use in early game, but by mid game tanned leather using their dung is pretty much integral to ultimately advancing in the tech tree, and making food easier to get (by fully automating it). and if you're seriously desperate, you can always kill him for food in revenge of the chicken he ate. :D

Really? I thought horses where pretty nice and a good method of transportation that was didn't require tons of stuff or water and was still fast/lets you move lots of items.

But everyone has opinions. Mine being that wolves in better than wolves are even more useless than normal

Horses were TOO nice. that was the issue. they completely ruined minecarts and the challanges they brought as a mode of transportation. horses are seriously fast, can jump high, can go anywhere you want... see the point? minecarts required you to have the resources, plan out your route, design a safe railway or risk getting a creeper hug mid ride, in exchange for a fast mode of transport.

Also, horses totally look like they have alligator heads. their part count is far too high to fit in with normal minecraft mobs, making them look more like a mo'creatures mod ripoff than something that belongs in vanilla.

And wolves in BTW are actually necessary to advance in the tech tree. You must shut those bastards out in dark holes, cramming meat down their mouths, and especially make sure not to feed them any zombie meat, but they're hardly useless. why, you can even chop them up for emergency food! or turn them into adorable pet blocks! or cut said blocks in half to double the adorableness! They may be evil, but they're hardly useless in BTW.

Hey guys, I'm not sure if I'm missing something because all my Googling has left me very confused, but is this mod still only compatible with 1.5.2?
    If so, why?
If not, where can I download the latest version?

it is indeed 1.5.2 only. the reason is because mojang team kept adding lots of silly things that didn't fit in with minecraft well, completely unbalanced the game, or looked entirely off from the rest of the game. (horses kinda fit all three!). I think the slime blocks one of the only things since then added to the game that FC showed any interest in, and as he pointed out, it's probably overpowered and going to cause a lot of unforseen balance issues. That said, they are really cool, one of the few good things they've put out recently.

At any rate, FC got tired of mojang throwing curveballs in updates that totally ruined balance and added new bugs, and made it more and more difficult to balance minecraft around, so he decided to just leave it at 1.5.2 to keep a known set of variables to balance the game around. he doesn't plan on updating to a newer version because of this. He's also finalizing the mod as well, so feature requests like diamond saws are going to be scorned and ignored even more than they usually are. :P

Actually, i did. I just didn't want to spoil the surprise inside for others. :3 i actually found two unlooted jungle temples even, and the prizes are safely waiting for me to build a trap to use them in.

Just started a BTW series on our channel, and just before recording noticed that if you are lucky, you can get 24 iron in the form of armour from a mob wearing it - the same as 216 ore!

Well yeah, that's intended. :P Although you need a crucible to make good use of it. generally iron armor from mobs has very low durability, so it's better to just save it up for when you get a crucible. that can take a pretty long time unless you're really careful with deaths, heh. once you do get a crucible, the main source of iron no longer becomes from mining, but from mob traps, which are an intended and integral part of better than wolves. mobs in BTW drop their rare drops even without player kills, although a few like carrots and potatoes from zombies were removed for balancing issues while other new drops were added. without a mob trap you're not likely to get a decent supply of scrolls for an infernal enchanter, for instance.

Not only that, said scrolls and other valuable drops come from everything from silverfish (in the end dimension only) and endermen, to squid, witches, jungle spiders (a BTW hell exclusive), and bats have their own good drops and unique requirements on automating their traps. You also want to save the red dragon orbs that drop from mob kills by using water flows to push them over hoppers with soulsand filters, to convert them to exp orbs and store them inside the sand. you will need quite a few of these hoppers to hold it all though, and more hoppers with various filters and different mechanisms, such as bouyancy and bellows, to separate the drops into different chests. ;3 that's a huge amount of the fun in btw, automation.

Man, it's been a while since i played the tech tree in BTW and the more recent versions realized just how much has changed. obviously hardcore nothing to worry about and hats really change the way you play, to the point where i'm absolutely terrified of both the nether and any body of water deeper than 2 blocks.

Then there was the change to flint and steel which made me think at first i had a buggy install. i was trying to light my nether portal and nothing was happening after a dozen attempts. finally i checked the changelog and noticed it was changed so there's only a chance of it working each time to prevent it from being a cheap weapon against mobs, then spammed it until i finally got a click. it took almost the entire durability before it worked. XD

i enjoyed the changes to the vanilla enchanter and the new goodies in temples, as it made every biome worth exploring. swamps have witches huts along with clay and lily pads, jungles had temples and coco beans, deserts had villages and temples, forests had lots of animals for food, taiga and tundra had wolves, mooshroom islands have mycelium and food in safety, plains had villages and easy to find food, along with annoying grass that slows you down but also can be used to your advantage to gain ground on mobs at night, and extreme hills have the best scenery. Oh, and oceans have a swift death, if that's what you want. I personally carried lily pads and dirt blocks with me to construct a swift ocean base if i was caught in the middle of nowhere without land in sight at night, though i never had to use it.

the change to progression with steel being endgame was a pleasant surprise as well. I just hit the crucible level, and seeing my diamond ingots not going to waste anymore, letting me remake my diamond tools, was a very happy surprise. couple that with the enchanter i found and i think my minings about to be taken to a whole new level, and is making me contemplate where to build a mob trap for the dragon orbs.

Thanks FC, i've played BTW a lot, but i think you've really nailed it with the more recent changes. the tech tree feels very smoothed out now, with each goal accomplished leading to another new one. the endgame feels much slower now too, instead of the sudden glut of tech advances at the end. I'm loving it!

Well, well. this was a rather epic hunt i had. After leaving my main base for wolves and some wheat, maybe carrots and potatoes, i left with a few stacks of food, my trusty diamond tools to insure i didn't get lazy, a boat and some cobble, a stack of torches, and a compass. (and full leather armor.)

i found wolves a few hundred blocks north of my spawn point nether portal, which i quickly secured and left near torches to go back to later, then went exploring north. and more north. and more north still. finally after wandering for roughly 10k blocks, i realized something was wrong. i had found nothing at all. no witch hut, no temples, no villages. I used nbtedit and discovered structures were off on the islands of eldaria v3 map i was using, so i had to turn it on, go to mcedit, delete all the chunks i had explored (but not the actual islands of eldaria area of course, that would be silly), and reenter the game and explore some more. X-x this time i properly found an abandoned jungle temple shortly after logging back in, which got me a few sticky pistons and arrows, along with a couple dispensers. a desert temple with an enchanter followed, along with a close call when getting the treasure beneath. a nice simple change there, FC, mining down came ::this:: close to killing me.

after that, two jungle temples followed, this time unlooted. after claiming their goods, i was getting frustrated at the lack of villages, so decided to head home before my luck ran out. fortunately, i found a desert village that was nearly invisible thanks to their sandstone buildings, and claimed both wheat and potatoes (yay, i have cows, so i'm especially happy with that). i even got some iron boots and leggings from it, but i lost the leggings shortly afterward when i missed my boat, sank into the depths, and frantically dropped them to swim to the surface, while promptly fighting off four hats. unfortunately more were lurking near my shinies, so i had to let it go and continue home.

thanks to my compass i brought, i was able to find my wolves, and after island hopping with another close encounter with hats, i sent them through my portal and got them and my loot safely home. my total prizes: 4 wolves, wheat and seeds, potatos, two iron swords and an iron shovel from zombies, an enchanting table, 15 iron ingots, 12 gold ingots, a gold record, an ancient manuscript, 9 powder kegs, 9 sticky pistons, 6 dispensers, 3 emeralds, a diamond, 2 dragon vessels, and 21 leather. ^_^

also while writing this and waiting for night to pass, my wolves made a funny portal noise. i quickly moved them to my nether portal to await further study because i don't trust them anywhere near my other animals now. <_<

I think it's more like 2 blocks to be instakilled myself, although with the minor "lag" due to SP and multiplayer merge, it may seem different. usually any more than that and i'm crippled, but usually alive. hug the creeper and youre dead for sure though.

amusingly enough, i've had creepers that were totally satisfied to get just in blowing up range then go no further, resulting in me taking like .5 hearts without armor, and wondering in amusement whether it was afraid i was going to snip them off if it got any closer.

Hehe...I must admit that whole thing still amuses me to no end :)

well thankfully i havn't died yet, although i've had a close call with the surprise jungle spider, and again when i first got them in their pen and was at near starvation (it was turning to night and i had to choose between them or me, and i for one didn't want to lose all the hard work it took getting them there) and started breeding them. i have to say, having half a dozen silverfish come at you when you're almost dead of hunger isn't fun. XD

and i managed to have one successful live birth, after all that. both of the parents were full of grass this time...i wonder if thats why it succeeded?

Welp, i just had my first experience with nether possessed enhanced animals. took 4 of em on a short trip through to my main base, in seconds they all went baritone on me.

theyre now occupying a nice little pen where i can safely observe them.

i have to say, the silverfish were a surprise, and the appearance of a hat was instinctively terrifying. i have to say the sudden swarm of bats was my favorite though. it was so simple yet dramatic, and they didn't try to kill me. XD

Does anyone know if they drop their rare drops from this method, or do you have to build a specific farm for those three?

You think that's bad, i finally opened a nether portal at my main base, only to discover that A) it was over lava with the only land just barely in sight and B ) a zombie had snuck in while i was lighting the portal from behind and C) i was now hurling toward said lava pit at 20802840 miles an hour and promptly lost my diamond pick, diamond axe, iron sword, a stack of food, and all the stacks of cobble i had for building a safe haven.

Cue a second time entering it only to fall in lava again, losing all my dirt blocks (i originally thought it was just a bad lag combined with nether generation) while noting the shadowy green figure mocking me from above and the "psion tried to swim in lava to escape zombie".

Third time i managed to knock it back with a stone axe into the lava, immediately exited, sealed off the portal, then promptly went strip mining with the last of my diamonds and iron to get enough cobble to properly build a safe haven. <_< (on a bright note, my strip mining yielded 24 diamonds and over a stack of iron, plus over a stack of lapis. so it wasn't all bad.)

Yesterday was nearly as bad when i died trying to explore for wolves and leather, successfully got a huge haul, then tried to get back to base. a hat found me when i was trying to port my wolves in the ocean... bad idea. took the entire day to find the location, put what i could in a treasure chest on a small island nearby, and promptly get eaten by hats again diving for the sunken treasure. by the end there were about 5 boats floating in the death area, and i never did recover some of my iron tools and armor. I did manage to get the rest of the stuff back, including 5 precious dungs, though. XD
