posted a message on MegaVillage: Manage 100+ villager trades + iron golem farm
Looks like the changes in 1.8, if they stand, are going to seriously affect the MegaVillage! Between the changes to villager breeding and nerfing the iron golem drops, this thing is going to be a lot harder to build and not nearly so productive! To see how the changes work, check out the videos by docm77 on Youtube.

A word of warning to anyone who plans to play this map under 1.8 - this map just became a LOT harder. Not only has villager breeding changed (you have to trade with every villager every time you want them to breed), but iron and gold farming have been seriously nerfed, with the latest snapshot, iron golems will not drop iron unless you actively kill them. No more automated kill chambers or safely killing them with sand or pistons. Likewise, zombie pigmen will not drop gold unless you kill them yourself (both iron and gold nugget drops are now rare just like weapons and armor are for zombies and skeletons. Of course, none of this is set in stone yet, but unless there is a serious backlash on any of this, it is the shape of things to come. To see how this all works, check out some of the videos by docm77 on YouTube,

I started to record a lets play on this one, but it is so hard I'm not doing very well, don't know if I'll actually upload it or not.
Character is about to starve to death leading me to some random acts of desperation not to mention an inability to count when calculating recources needed.
Started out with the best of intentions on keeping it looking pretty but it didn't work out according to plan.

One quick question though,....it's not against the rules to look for more recources on the ovcean floor is it?
Also : is there any food down there?

Best tip I can give - plant five or six oak trees. If you are limited on space, you can store the other saplings in your chest until you have room for them. And be sure to plant them at least six blocks apart (five blocks between) - you don't want the foliage to grow together to get the maximum amount of leaf blocks. This will improve your chances of getting enough apples to live on. Be sure to make a large enough wooden platform to catch all the drops. And put a torch next to each tree to maximize the light it gets - it will grow faster if you do. Also, if you convert your wood into half-slabs and place them in the lower position, mobs won't spawn on them sop you can save your torches for other areas. Plus, the wood will go twice as far. Just don't make your "village" out of half slabs - villagers can glitch through half slabs and drown.

going to the ocean floor is recommended...and actually required if you plan on going to the nether...

Actually, you don't have to even for that - you can trade for one with a villager once they start breeding.

It's great so far, but I had a problem when starting that I think I might have again: One of the villagers was stupid enough to walk off the island into the water, and then managed to sink and get stuck under the island, and drown, so I had to get a second copy of the map. Not really a problem that can be fixed, but annoying nonetheless. But other then that, I've really enjoyed the map! It's quite fun, as I enjoyed Skyblock a lot,

Try this - after sleeping through the first night, harvest a little wood (tip: if you only chop the bottom four logs, the leaves won't decay yet). Dig a hole two blocks wide and place two blocks beside the hole, one above the other. Push the villagers into the hole and put two more blocks above the two block hole. This traps them in the hole until you can move them into their new home, and keeps them from wandering into anything. Before learning this little trip I lost them on the cactus (in earlier versions, the cactus was not in the chest but on one of the sand blocks), and even standing on a sapling when it grew (they will suffocate there). Also, I moved the trees out one block so they have a little more room to grow (and their leaves don't intermingle - giving better chances for sapling and apple drops).

OK - I've been playing this map for a few days now (some may remember my photos from 4.0). I finally made it to the Nether, so I've got cobble! Here's the progress I've made so far:

Framed in the four main biomes (not sure what I'll do with the central biome yet - right now it is simply covered with fences to keep mobs from spawning there and still preserve the grass.

Next is my Mega-Village. I'm going to try to automate the iron golem collection below, but I didn't bother with automating the culling of the villagers.

Next is my little house. Not really very big (11x9 footprint), but I did make a basement for my future enchanting table and future brewing stand. I do have an anvil down there now.

Here is my nether portal - built above the center of the island.

Finally, here's my farm. It isn't done yet, but I've got 64 sugar cane, 64 wheat, 12 pumpkin and 4 mellon vines, 4 each Oak, Birch, Spruce and Jungle trees (not counting the single trees at the center of the island in tribute to the four that you start with. I've only got one each of the carrot and potato but there will be 16 of each of those as well. My corral will be three times larger as soon as I get more dirt, but I now have two cows, two pigs, two sheep, one chicken, one horse, and a cat. I still need to fill in the four biomes, and I will be making them more interesting (for example, I will be putting a giant jungle tree in the jungle biome, a couple spruce trees in the taiga, and a water area and vine draped oak trees in the swamp. I also still have to make the mob farm, and I still need to expand the tree farm to include the acacia and giant oak trees.

I know I can build up to get snow, but I think it kind of defeats the original principles of this map. I liked the original symmetry of the map, and, since the taiga can be changed to snowy taiga, it goes back to it's original idea. Besides, I liked the ocean freezing in the taiga biome - it added a certain something to the original map!

I started playing this one, and noticed a couple of potential problems.

1 - the mushroom and jungle biomes are chopped up - they were more or less rounded 12x12 squares, but they are shortened in one direction.

2 - the taiga biome in 1.7 is not cold. The biome needs to be changed to snowy taiga, or we won't get any snow/ice in that biome, which means no snow golems.

Have you tried doing a mine? Going down to the bottom? It's a good try.. hehe :)

Thankx, ShinzoX - I hadn't gotten to the "leap of faith" yet. I just finished cleaning out the abandoned mineshaft and I made it down to the bedrock layer. A little more down there, and I should be able to try the water and fire temples. Oh, and I'm playing under 1.72 and I just killed two witches that spawned in at night (I only got a stick for my trouble though).

Just found this map (thanks to Tannah's video channel). Looked interesting, so I thought I'd give it a try. So far so good - I've only died once (danged creepers!) so far, and I have a nice little house (not big enough for the challenge - it's only 7x9), a well, a garden, sugar cane farm and a cobble generator. I haven't gone into either temple yet, so I don't know what is in there. I have gone down into the mineshaft briefly, but haven't completely explored it yet. A few pics:

First is my house. Got a bed, two furnaces and crafting table inside so far (plus a couple of chests - plenty of chests in this map! ;p)

Next is my farm - got lots of wheat growing (32 plants):

I really like how the different types of sandstone block make my well look:

Finally my cobble generator - it's just a super basic model, and you can see how I messed it up the first time (gotta wait until I get a diamond pick to clean that up):

I've also got a nice tree farm going with six jungle trees growing. I would like to see other types of trees available - jungle trees can be so finicky.

Now, if I can just find more dirt...

Interesting map so far - I've gotten to both islands and got a farm going. Been down in the caverns for a look around and found very little down there. The one thing I haven't found any of so far is sand - difficult to make glass, windows and bottles without it.

Might want to increase the amount of lapis, since that is the only way to get blue dye, and if we want to include stained clay and stained glass in the goals, it'll take more blue dye than even using a fortune pick will get you.

Lookin' good, detfig! But I'm pretty sure you aren't getting mooshrooms on your platform because they need grass to spawn rather than mycelium. Also, I think I read somewhere that there is a spawn limit of 16 animals total. So if you add together all your cows, chickens, sheep, pigs, wolves and ocelots and the total is 16 or higher, the mooshrooms won't spawn at all. Best to cull back to two each of the animals and then breed them after you get everything spawned in. And, just to be on the safe side, I'd convert at least half your mooshroom platform to grass - that way you've got al bases covered.

Wow - if the latest snapshot stands as is, it will make this map a LOT harder! We'll have to kill nine times more zombie pigmen to get our second villager!

I wish - but I'm afraid that even if Mojang uploads a bug fix saturday, it'll probably take two more weeks for Apple to approve the download. I certainly hope I am proven wrong.

Pics of my latest run as promised:

First, here's my first shelter - thanks Detfig for the design!

Next, my Nether Portal. I had to fence it in and light it up to keep the skeletons and other mobs out (learned that the hard way!):

Here's my garden - can't wait to get a bucket so I can actually fill the troughs with water and hydrate the soil:

Next is my mob farm. No water, but interestingly it doesn't really seem to need it - I'm getting LOTS of mobs and drops (already got a carrot):

Finally, a look down from the mob farm. I really don't have to worry much about wood now!

Next task is to go back to the nether and work on getting blaze rods!
