posted a message on 1.8 and the lack of diamonds
I found a batch of 8 diamonds right off the bat in a pre-release version along with spotting some others on a ravine floor (never have logged back into the world to get them) but haven't noticed any in the official 1.8.

But then, I've been too busy exploring and haven't been mining much though either

maybe if instead of stealing blocks. the block they pick up is just copied. Nothing is removed just copied.

It would be slightly better but you'd still have random blocks being placed all over. I have to agree with many of the others who said this before me though as I see absolutely no reason why it was added to the game in the first place. Not sure who looked at the concept of random block movements and thought... "You know what? This is scary."

The problem is that these "fixes" might not come until 1.9. Whenever that is.

Exactly. I've not looked at the source code lately but I would wager that at least the Enderman fix wouldn't be too difficult. Snow was supposedly already fixed just not put in the released version (just a rumor I heard, not confirmed) so I was hoping that would be a nice little fix if anyone wanted to try too. I miss my snow :sad.gif:

    How about this:

When they are close to you (within 25 blocks) they move things like sand, dirt, maybe stone; other natural materials, chests and workbenches and furnaces as well just for kicks.

When they become hostile, they will break through planks, logs, cobble, glass/glass panes, sandstone, bricks, etc. It would also be nice if they dropped what they were carrying when you hit them or kill them so you can get it back. If you move too far away, they will teleport behind / to the side of you instead of digging.

    Now that would be awesome.

See I just hope that the Minecraft team actually manages to either come up with stuff like that or reads it on this forum. I'm not 100% about them picking stuff up when you're nearby but it would still be far, far better than it is now. The idea of them tearing stuff down/digging through things to get to you and/or just teleporting is rather appealing though and would help to make their currently very poor battle techniques work a bit better I bet.

Yes, I am one to say that I think their behavior needs tweaking; Does anyone have suggestions as to how? It is highly unlikely that they will stop moving blocks altogether - the block-moving is part of what they do.

I've so far seen the following suggestions:

    1. Move blocks only when hostile (looked at and away / attacked)
    2. Move only 'natural' blocks
    3. Move only blocks that the player has not touched

Overall, I think they should not be able to move blocks such as obsidian or bedrock; and I would not mind if they were more deliberate in their approach. I think their 'moving any and all blocks' is definitely a bug, but since I have not imported a 1.7 map into 1.8, it may be that old structures are not 'marked' and thus Endermen move them freely.

I do like the first suggestion you listed, about only moving blocks when the player has managed to catch their attention. In this case they would become like creepers and careful players could ensure that their structures were not destroyed in this case. I think that would fix a vast majority of peoples' complaints about these guys... Next thing on the list would be to try to actually make them tougher

I think many people forgot about a real simple item.. Its called a torch. On most SMP servers I visit people use torches way to sparsely. Put them all over the damned place.

Some structures look great in certain lighting. Spamming torches is kind of pointless in those cases. Not to mention I enjoy walking through the woods in minecraft without seeing several of the trees taken apart already and the remains just floating there. Can't light up the entire world with just torches.

Just so we're clear, that's not why there's creative mode.

    Consider the following two statements:
    1. "I don't like dealing with mobs and just want to build."
    2. "I like survival mode and enjoy when my structures are threatened in a gameplay-enhancing fashion."

Many folks in this thread mistakenly believe that #1 people are actually involved in this thread (hint: they are not). The #2 people are the ones asking for alterations to endermen behavior: they actually enjoy survival mode and encourage the use of destructive mobs but do not believe the way endermen are implemented presently enhances gameplay.

This is survival mode. Endermen do not promote survival: they promote maintenance. If I wanted to spend my gaming hours on maintenance, I would be playing FarmVille.

    Address #2, not #1.

I think that their teleportation and AI could use a LOT of work to make them even mildly efficient. As of now they're just too weak. Also, their ability to just pick things up and move them around, while not done that often, is still extremely irritating.

With tweaks, I think they could really be an awesome mob. As it stands now though, they're kind of like the derpy mob of the game that doesn't work quite the way anyone hoped.

posted a message on An obvious solution to Endermen:
Maybe... just maybe... Some of us like the look of the terrain as well. Maybe... just maybe... some of us don't want to ruin the looks of some of our otherwise perfectly functional builds by putting a bunch of water around them. Not everyone builds castles with moats or dirt houses.

It wouldn't take but 2-3 lines of code to just make it an option to toggle so it would be a great addition to a future update or at least a mod in the mean time. People speak out so that maybe the makers of Minecraft will understand the problem and change this in the future so we don't have to rely on mods to "unbreak" half of the game.

I find it kinda sad that people find the endermen a challenge.

"Oh wow theyve removed a log from my house! I'm sure gonna die now!"

No. Cave spiders are a challenge. The only people endermen effect are people like OP.

I don't think anyone is complaining that they are too much of a challenge (though some are defending them based on that assertion). The main point is that they remove blocks randomly and, over time, can really mess up the terrain and even structures that we have built. Which is why most of us simply want an option to turn that feature of them off, because killing mobs and making moats isn't the only thing there is to Survival.
