posted a message on How do you put torches in item frames?
The problem isn't with the torch. You have to stand pretty close to an item frame and make sure you have the frame selected instead of the block behind it, or you'll just place the block over the frame. It's most annoying with glass because then you have to break it.

posted a message on What to do with 7 stacks pluse 38 bricks?
One of the nicest-looking things I ever built was a brick watch tower up on a big rock overlooking a bay... It was just a cobble base, brick pillars, and several stories of pine wood floors between the pillars. Very simple, attractive combination IMO.

posted a message on What do you guys do with your cobblestone?
All you guys who throw it away might as well smelt it first. It's not like you're going to use all that coal, and you might as well get some experience orbs out of it.

And using stone tools is dumb. All your resources are infinite; this game is about time management. The more you use your epicly enchanted diamond pickaxe, the more diamonds (and everything else) you get. Not using your diamonds to get more diamonds as fast as possible is just the wrong way to mine.

posted a message on help redesigning wheat farm
Remember that wheat pops out of the ground when the lights go out if you aren't under the sky.

So build underground, put lights in the wall, and put pistons with gravel in front of the lights.

    D.1
    :cobblestone:
    :--+: :: :||||: :||||: :||||:
    :cobblestone: :gravel: :grass: :grass: :grass:
    :cobblestone: :Furnace: :RFlower: :RFlower: :RFlower:

    D.2
    :cobblestone:
    :--+: :gravel: :////: :....: :////:
    :cobblestone: :wood: :grass: :grass: :grass:
    :cobblestone: :Furnace: :RFlower: :RFlower: :RFlower:

    :Furnace: = piston
    :wood: = extended piston
    :RFlower: = redstone path

No flowing water needed. It also doesn't need sticky pistons.

Mob spawners as in the little cage blocks found in dungeons... Yes, those will spawn mobs in mid-air and they will fall and take damage right away. That's the only way.

So with the boat changes, is the half-slab glitch fixed?

For quite a while there has been a glitch that if a boat falls any distance out of water and onto a block, the player in the boat takes massive damage, usually dying. It typically occurs with half-slab docks and with animals in the water.

Is this glitch gone with the boat changes?

posted a message on Help Please! Died with no respawn point out...completly lost!
I don't know how far lost you are, but if you're within a few biomes, just walk along the edge of the biomes to retrace your steps. I did this when lost back at my original spawn, but I was within one map of the new home I was trying to find which made it pretty simple.

posted a message on My Wall design (need feedback)
Too many textures, especially in the top portion. The bottom portion with just the wood towers, cobble and stone brick looks nice.

So I would re-build with just three textures. I would use stone brick instead of wood for the pillars, and then have the walls behind the towers built out of cobble and wood planks.

This is a major fail, but I'm pretty sure "digging straight down" refers to digging the block out from under your feet. Did you do that in your story but I'm bad at reading?

I'm pretty sure everybody digs vertical mine shafts.

posted a message on How many crafting tables do you have in your survival world
I'd guess over 100. I leave them all over the place, including in random mines and caves. Why would you ever want to be more than 10 seconds from a crafting table? I'll often use them just as a stepping stool to jump up on walls or fences

posted a message on If you could add one thing to the villagers, what would it be?
    Quote from AbnormalSloth

I would add a type of quest system to them were you talk to one, they ask for something(Example: 6 fish) and they will give you something in return( Harder the task, Better the loot)

Please NO fetch quest system. For God's sake. I play this game instead of every gawdawful Zelda sequel.

Instead it should be some kind of actual trading system. Which might amount to fetch quests over time, but hopefully not as lame.

They would start by actually farming their wheat, but they could also farm other things native to their biome, including wolves and ocelots, cactus, different colored wood or different colored wool, fish, etc. If the village was in a bad place, without a native crop, you could give them melon seeds or pumpkin seeds to get them started. All villages would value gold and diamonds, but also the farmable items not native to their region.

Then you could play trader, either directly trading with the villages or helping them trade with one another.

Why do they all cram into one building anyways? Is it always the building in the northwest corner?

Obviously they could do some pretty awesome and complex stuff with them, but any kind of advanced trading or mining or expanding their own villages seems kind of far-fetched when they have a town with 20+ houses and they all spend the night in one 3x5 shanty.

posted a message on Hunger: Yay or Nay?
    Quote from dropdragon

Hunger kinda encourages you NOT to build stuff.

Sure, you can make a farm/pig pen/etc. But those are one-off, simplistic things. Not particularly encouraging of building.

As a matter of fact, you basically need large quantities of food in order to complete buildings that would simply not be necessary otherwise. And it goes beyond simple building. Even when mining, woodcutting, or simple traveling, each block broken, walked across, and jumped is an aggravating tick less of hunger that really piles up subconsciously to the point of not enjoying the game near as much anymore. It also encourages you to stay in one simple spot and acquire food, where the health system basically gave you the freedom to go anywhere without relying on food.

You always had to stop and look for creepers while building stuff. Now I just eat a chicken while I'm looking around. So it doesn't really take more time. In fact, once again, it usually will take LESS time, at least for me, because I'll probably fall off my scaffolding half a dozen or a dozen times while on a large build. I can cure all of that lost health just by filling my hunger bar with a single stack of farmable food, instead of having to run home and get more steaks, or go off hunting for non-farmable animals just to cure fall damage and keep building.

And if you want to do one-off simplistic builds, that's what you'll make for everything. You need shelter to survive your first night? That's just a one-off, simplistic build. But you make it more complex because it's fun.

It used to be that by about 3-7 nights into the game your house would be done, you'd have a mine to bedrock, and there wouldn't be anything else to build. As much as I get nostalgic for old alpha and beta builds of mine, I know that they were mostly pointless, empty buildings. Instead of exploring my world further, I'd start a new one so I could build a new house. And I know from the forums that a lot of people played this way. I've built far more in my current world than in any old worlds I've had, but almost all of the buildings actually house stuff or serve purposes, and part of that is because of hunger.
