Modders who mod games for no monetary gain are rare.
That's...not true at all. Varius MMorpg addons (World of warcraft,everquest, everquest 2) Valve games where they sometimes actually hire the mod makers and bethesda (Oblivion,Morrowind, Fallout 3 and new vegas) all have a huge mod community who do it not for anything in return but for fun and getting the most out of the game. I believe bethesda hired the maker of Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul to help out on new vegas and Valve has hired the makers of counter-strike and day of defeat into the team.
It isn't rare, you're just really oblivious to the modding communities.

Yep, dood! I usually go by Prinny God in most forums, oddly enough I found out that that name was taken already. The only choice now is to overthrow the current Prinny god to redeem my title, dood!
