I like building in savanna caves. Still a major work in progress, you can see the exposed stone to the left which is my current construction area. Small farm house to the right. 2 Entrances, one up the right side from farm house, one straight up from left. Large lower front structure are terraces, 'fountain' empties into terrace of water, the rest of terraces below that are grass (not really visible from this viewing angle). Large window and skylight on current top floor.

There are only a few decent survival journals I see nowadays and they take quite long to update. Surprisingly, few people also post their survival worlds in the survival forums (which for me is kinda ironic).

Of all of them, I really like snapshots. You can't join servers, but I love to use snapshots for map-making.
I do like alpha and beta versions, because those are what started them all.
Out of Indev and Infdev, I liked the Infdev because it added infinite worlds, and how Notch was playing around [especially with Beast Boy, Rana, and Black Steve] was very funny.

My favorite update happened to be Beta 1.8, as it added in most of how we think of Minecraft now.

Also, In your houses, I want only easily survival-obtainable resources, so no mods that are OP or add extra blocks. List of mods you can use:

Any aesthetic mod, that does not overly enhance your house.
Texture Packs, as long as it is clear what each block is. [In fact, please use HD texture packs if you can.]

Ask me if there are any mods that are not listed that you want to use.
