Find some material that blends well in color and experiment around... that's what I do, and my houses normally turn out pretty good.

Trim the roofs or the floors, makes it look finished.

Slightly, you'll normally find diamond scattered about layers 1-16.
If your looking for it, it's not that rare.
edit: You're way deeper than 12 blocks below sea level...
