I've seen the problem before, and I'm not sure about a SURE way to fix it, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fences being either too thin or not opaque (Or both). I guess you could solve the problem by making a fence out of actual blocks instead of fences...
I know it's not the best solution, and It won't look as good as the fences, but it's all I've got. =/
Someone made a thread on the forums here once, that involved a pretty neat trick, but it would only work on a vanilla server.
He had a minecart system leading out to the nether that suddenly dropped the player onto a platform of beds above lava. The player, without commands like /home or /spawn would be trapped - forced to either dive into the lava or detonate the beds.
I mean, if you're gonna cheat already, then why not just go all the way?
I agree. This method seems really cheap is it not only requires you to go into peaceful mode, but also abuse the game-loading-invincibility thingy...
At that point you might as well just cheat in the first place.
I don't think they were made any more difficult to find, but... they could be
Probably not recently though. The last big terrain gen. change was back in 1.8, but I dunno. Sometimes you just get unlucky.
It's faster, yes. And as zxql mentioned, faster with a two-high block ceiling above you.
However, you should note that sprint jumping wrecks your hunger bar, so if you're short on food, avoid it.
If this is only about what I use pickaxes on, then I happily use my diamond tools until they break. I don't use a pickaxe to kill mobs or mine dirt and such- but I do use it to mine stone and such.
Why? Because if I don't use my pickaxe what am I going to do with it? It's not the end of the world if it breaks. I can just revert back to iron tools, but by the time my pick breaks I'll probably have enough diamond to make another.
Wow, that's very odd. You could start by trying simple things like restarting your computer, then re-downloading the minecraft launcher. If that doesn't work, you could try moving the contents of one of your friend's .minecraft folder and copying it to yours.
That's an odd problem though. Never heard of it before.
Look for any signs that someone's been around. If you know anything about where your friends were headed look around and always look out for nametag plates. If your friends are new-ish to Minecraft they probably don't know how to cover up their tracks very well, and probably didn't venture very far.
In any case, I'm saying there's no sure-fire way to find them, but you must try your best to hunt them down! ;D
If you're looking for difficulty, you could making your server's map a CTM map, or another challenging survival map. CTM maps have an ultimate goal, but many of them can be played as standard survival maps for a long time.
Not sure if this will work for you, but thought I'd suggest it. You may want to start by looking at the original Super Hostile CTM series.
You should add that carrots can be made into golden carrots - Which on their own have a terrific saturation, and can be made into night vision and invisibility potions.
I've sen a build a while ago that built a to-scale earth a while ago. It didn't have any features on it - Just flat land, but I'm pretty sure it was to scale and matched the shape of the continents. I don't know if they used a ratio like you did. It may have just been easier to use the idea that each Minecraft block is 1 meter long...
They should add features that were supposed to be added a long time ago, like the fish mob you mentioned. But of course, I don't want them to focus on too many new features because the modding API should be their main goal for the update.

(Beds explode in the nether if ya didn't know.)

I'd recommend searching at layer 10.

But you should fix the discolored wood on the first floor. It's driving me insane. ;P
