    So we can detect monsters now? Why not create a rune:

    or similar that rearranges to form an arrow pointing to the nearest entity, the tip of the arrow being coal if that entity is a player, and the tip being redstone (what the Red wool should be) if it is a monster. If might only check within the current chunk and maybe some adjacent ones to prevent too much CPU usage. The very end of the tail of the arrow must be clicked in order to update the arrow, unless this could be done in real-time?

    I created this poll in response to we6jbo's topic Petition: Name it Hell
    I have several reasons for starting this topic:
    • I liked we6jbo's style of using a poll, good 'ol democracy that lets Notch know what a subgroup of his user base thinks, without too much pressure.
    • I do not like the name Hell. It is already a cliche term, that is being applied to a game is so original. By now, it has no meaning, it's just a word and doesn't carry any weight with it. Something like that should not belong in Minecraft.
    • I like the name Sacred Grounds. It carries weight and sounds decidedly more epic. Also, it's a great nod to Cave Story, another great indie game. Also, the two places have similarities. Difficult enemies, red hues, suspense, no place to stay put and remain safe, ect.
    • I want to see how the forum community responds, I'll try to add more options to see why you chose what you did, and please post when you vote, I want to know your reasoning, perhaps you might change mine!

    Also, I know that there are many threads about the name of the new dimension, but few have polls, and fewer still take a definite stand for one name or another (we6jbo's being one of the few). I really hope everyone takes this seriously. I quite like the idea. Re-voting is enabled, so feel free to change your vote as discussion sways you. I put some posting prompts in the options so you know what I'm looking for really.

    If your smart about it, and don't mind the inconvenience, you can use the home command to go deep underground and then tele to spawn to prevent loss of spot and such.

    By far my favorite server simply because it is simple :iapprove:

    Reason for joining: This server seems stable, has the mods I desire, and it's whitelist policy prevents greifing. Also, the embracing of the clans is a nice touch. Working with the community instead of pretending they don't exist is cool.
    Other info: I have only owned minecraft for 2 months, but I have been following development for at least a year before that. I have sporadic and inconsistent internet usage habits.

    I was wondering, is there a list anywhere that has all the servers that have this mod installed? I really want to play only servers with this mod, because it is :iapprove:some. The only one I found that openly states they do, is Rusty's, but his is down and the search function fails me :sad.gif:

    It's far too bad about the griefers, I was playing on your server for a while and it was pretty nice, spent some time hollowing out the amazing canopy in that large forest you had for a hideout! (I'm Ikachan when I play by the way). But then it crashed when I tried to teleport home after a huge expedition into a large cave system.... oh well.

    Guns? Dragons? How about the ALMIGHTY GUNBLADE!!!! Right-click tis a gun, left click = pew pew. Right-click tis a sword, left click = chop chop.

    Also, minecraft definitely needs a slow time button so we can see our epic aerial dodges and gun snipes in uber slow mode!

    I did say that you would need to learn to love it over again. I know that the minecraft community at large probably wont accept such a huge change, but I'm sure at least a small portion of them would like this, hence the reason for posting. I'm glad you like the game so much to be loyal to the idea that is Minecraft Sealystar, I like it too. It's just that in my world my vision of Minecraft differs slightly :wink.gif:

    Yes, something similar was suggested, click the link in the third bulletin at the top of my post. I just thought my idea was separate and distinct and well... newer, to avoid necroposting in an old thread. Also, if each current block is a certain memory set of ... how many different blocks are there? *checks* 50... so you need 7 memory bits to store that info. then there is lighting info, 9 levels so 5 memory bits, in the system I propose you need 8 bits for the storage info added onto that, you also need bits for state, such as plowed or not, wet or not, direction, ect. IMHO I'm seeing yes, those 8 bits are a signifigant addition, but hardly enough to warrent an 8x increase in file size, maybe a 2-3x and probably a 4x, but not 8x. And maybe the space required is worth it, if you like the idea well enough. Do you honestly think that it isn't worth it? Even with all the bonuses I listed?

    First off:

    •This suggestion deals with a (possibly) major revision to the engine that (likely) CANT and WONT EVER be implemented. I just want to get it out of my head and onto the internets.

    •A suggestion similar to this was created about a year ago, but it dealt with an addition to the original engine that went in a different direction than the one I imagine. It can be seen here.

    Now that that is over, we can get to the meat of the suggestion. I love playing in Minecraft, and creating giant mega structures in creative is just plain fun! But due to computer constraints, I must keep the fog levels high in order to maintain stable frame rates. With the advent of Infdev, people began to show off screenshots of their own mega structures made possible by the increased availability of land and resources. These people did not use fog, and when they posted, the far away structures began to look more realistic because the blockiness of the cubes in Minecraft began to vanish. See this example from the stickied Cathedral Project in the creative forums.


    Notice how the front door and arch are beginning to look curved?

    Now, don't take me the wrong way, the blockiness of Minecraft is what (I believe) has kept the thousands of players playing. It is a wonderful style and should never simply be abandoned. I am NOT suggesting the abandonment of the blocks.

    My suggestion is that ALL blocks of mine craft be shrunk, effectively doubling the resolution of Minecraft in all three dimensions. This means that each block becomes 1/8 of it's original size. And because we are not changing the size of the character, it would seem as if your character has grown in size, which would take some getting used to.

    But what about controls? Would your ability to mine and dig and cut be different? No. You would (hopefully) be able to toggle between affecting an original block size and the new block size. This lets you powermine eight blocks at a time yet finely detail your walls and stairs. I believe Minecraft has hit the sweetspot for crafting size, but I believe it would be better this way. The creatures would not change in size either, so combat would remain unaffected.

    Some examples:

    Right now, a tree trunk is one trunk block
    :log:
    But in the double resolution edition, you could have a heartwood block 2x2x2 surrounded by bark blocks
    :log: :log: :log: :log:
    :log: :sand: :sand: :log:
    :log: :sand: :sand: :log:
    :log: :log: :log: :log:
    (just imagine that the sand = heartwood ok?)
    This solves the problem of space for branches in trees too.
    Also, landscapes would gain the freedom to curve and appear more organic.

    In Conclusion

    • I want to have Minecraft's Ingame Resolution of the blocks doubled permanently, abandoning the original block size.
    • This will NOT affect combat.
    • This will:
    + Easily make construction prettier.
    + Allow (more) organic looking landscapes.
    + Increase the amount of possible structures and change current ones to a more realistic model.
    + Replace the need for the step block (half block) and eliminate the problems associated with it.


    - Likely require a huge rewrite of the engine, which takes time.
    - Change the feel of Minecraft, which will need to be fallen in love with over agian 8-)
    - Ruin all your saves and current structures (or at least make them look terribly blocky compared to the land) :evil:


    I haven't even bothered to consider the implications on inventory, item crafting, or level generation, but I'm sure that the creative minds of the Minecraft community can suggest their own variations/opinions/ :idea: s on such below.

    As was said before, this is an amazingly fresh post that brought new ideas to the hot topic of magic in Minecraft. It would be very fun to see this implemented as it gives rise to several features that wouldn't need to be hardcoded. An example being the fact the your home base will slowly be aligned to your alignment and will refill you aura stocks when you spend long amounts of time there. That wouldn't need to be implemented specifically, it simply arises from the nature of the suggestion!

    I suppose your right, it's just that I'm a bit crazy when it comes to details like that. My head screams at me when you start falling like a rock as soon as you step off a block. It's only my personal opinion and nobody needs to agree, but I really do think the game would have a funner feel to it with lower gravity, as right now I feel kind of weighty...

    Sounds very practical, I like! Why not have a hand held version that you can only control your view finder by actually moving your person (very course and difficult to navigate) and a stand version that you can set up and fine tune control with the arrow keys?

    As per request, different results
    d= 10, 64
    t= 0.77, 2.50
    a= 33.73, 20.48

    This is where the terminal velocity starts showing, because it messes with the results of the 64m distance, also, the need for more accurate timing shows up in the 10m distance trial, because I can only get an approximate because the times are so small....

    [edit] After reading my post, I realized how grammatically insane it sounds when you begin talking to Yourself! :twisted: Nice name choice!
