    I don't know if this has been asked before; is there a way to spawn/summon a nest with eggs in it? I'm in a creative world with this mod and I'd like to make some filled nests for decoration.

    Also a really cool bird to add could be a Roc! They are huge beasts, and can carry off a man, thus are aggressive. However if you manage to snatch an egg (and survive) you can have a chance to have your own Roc which you can saddle and fly. (perhaps like a horse, or just use the phoenix's way)

    Yep, just right click a nest with chicken eggs and it'll add an egg to the nest. That can only be done in creative though. I think I have a Roc added to my list to do, but I'll have to double check xP

    I already suggested the ostrich riding thing, so he might do it :)

    Yep, yep. Thanks for reminding me xP

    Will tameable finches and pigeons ever be added?

    Finches, I doubt it. Pigeons almost definitely. I want to add some sort of messenger pigeon system :P

    I know falconry is hardly the most original idea, but those are pretty much identical to my thoughts from the previous page. Either way, I think we can agree that those would be some of the core mechanics of falconry.

    I know this whole idea is a long way away for now, and I agree that improving flight is a better priority. Still, it's fun to think of what this mod's falconry could become!
    Here are some more ideas:

    1. Each bird subset used in falconry has different stats and a unique ability

    Each bird would bring its own advantages and tradeoffs. For example:

    Eagle
    Damage: +++++
    Speed: +++++
    Health: +++++
    Passive Ability:
    Clutch - when sent to capture small prey or other birds, the eagle has a chance to grasp the prey in its claws before bringing it back to the player.

    Falcon
    Damage: +++++
    Speed: +++++
    Health: +++++
    Passive Ability:
    Breakneck Speed - when diving to kill smaller prey, a falcon has a high chance to snap the creature's neck, killing it instantly.

    Hawk
    Damage: +++++
    Speed: +++++

    Health: +++++
    Passive Ability:
    Raking Talons - when attacking enemies, hawks have a chance to inflict a painful blow with their talons, causing a bleeding effect over time.

    Owl
    Damage: +++++
    Speed: +++++
    Health: +++++
    Passive Ability:
    Keen Sight: grants the player night vision during the night and in dark areas.

    Vulture
    Damage: +++++
    Speed: +++++
    Health: +++++
    Passive Ability:
    Scavenger - enemies killed by a vulture or by the player with an active vulture nearby have a greatly increased chance to drop additional items.

    ---- Other birds not traditionally used in falconry might not be as strong, but would still have unique effects useful for specific situations. ----

    Parrot
    Damage: +++++
    Speed: +++++
    Health: +++++
    Passive Ability:
    Aggravating Screech - every 7-10 seconds in combat, the parrot screeches loudly, causing nearby enemies to become nauseated for a few seconds.

    Crow/Raven
    Damage: +++++
    Speed: +++++
    Health: +++++
    Passive Ability:
    Cunning - crows and ravens can be trained to obey additional commands, including "Patrol" and "Guard", and can be beckoned without a falconry glove using the command /call <Petname>.

    2. Falconry birds can be fitted with special items and armor

    As a way to further augment your hunting companion, you can craft various items to improve their stats.

    Leg-bands increase the bird's health by 5 hearts per tier - Gold 5 / Iron 10 / Diamond 15.

    These are visible as two small rings around the bird's legs.

    Armored talons increase attack damage by 2 hearts per tier - Gold 2 / Iron 4 / Diamond 6. Additionally, these can be enchanted with any of the default sword enchantments.

    These are visible as small metal tips on the bird's talons.

    War-bird Harnesses greatly improve the bird's health at the cost of its flying speed:
    Gold 10 hearts + 10% speed loss / Iron 15 hearts + 20% speed loss / Diamond 20 hearts + 30% speed loss. These can be enchanted with most of the default armor enchantments.

    These are visible as thin metal plating covering the top of the bird's head, its body, and the front of its wings: see here. (A tiny picture, but it's the best I could find.)

    Essence of the Phoenix allows your bird to respawn at your set spawn location (or perhaps a perch that it can be assigned to?) if it is killed. The item is consumed on use.

    It is visible as a small yellow locket around the bird's neck.

    Heart of the Phoenix allows your bird to respawn at your set spawn location (or its specified perch) if it is killed. It is not consumed after use, and lasts indefinitely. Note that this not only requires the addition of blaze powder, but also an enchanted golden apple as its core.

    It is visible as a small locket around the bird's neck with a blazing orange gem in the center.

    If you shift-right click on a bird with an empty hand, any items it is wearing will pop off, allowing you to remove or upgrade them.

    3. Birds can be trained to unlock additional abilities

    After every kill or capture, birds used in falconry would gain experience. At certain levels, they would gain new abilities: at first, universal abilities, and then eventually the abilities of other bird species. This way, a very dedicated player could have whatever bird they wished without worrying about not gaining certain abilities (although the base stats would remain different - a Vulture wouldn't eventually do as much damage as an Eagle without armored talons or other enhancements). Example below:

    Hawk

    Level 2: Gouge (Universal ability):
    When attacking non-prey creatures and other players, your bird will occasionally gouge its enemy's eyes, inflicting Blindness for a few seconds.

    Level 3: Disarm (Universal ability)
    Your bird has a chance to snatch the weapon of a monster or player out of their hands, disarming them temporarily.

    Level 5: Messenger (Universal ability):
    Your bird can store up to 3 items in a pouch attached to its leg, and can be sent to deliver items to a location or player.

    Level 7: Eyes in the Sky (Universal ability):

    Send your bird to fly high above an area in the distance and scout the land. When in the area below your bird, you gain a slight movement speed increase (5-10%), and mobs have the "glowing" effect during the day.

    Level 9 - 15: From this point onward, your bird will gain the abilities of the other species, in an order determined by the species of bird (basically, whatever abilities make most sense for that bird come first). For example, Owls would gain Cunning, then Raking Talons, then Clutch, etc. Vultures would gain Aggravating Screech, then Raking Talons, then Keen Sight, etc.

    I may have gotten a little carried away... but I hope you can use some of those suggestions for the future!

    I really like some of those ideas you have there. It's very detailed and I can tell you've put a lot of effort into it! I think buffing the pets and levelling them up might get a bit too complicated, but having specific abilities for each bird, as well as add-ons like talons and harnesses to increase damage and armour sounds awesome. In fact this might get so big that I'll make an add-on mod.

    How long does a Phoenix egg actually take to hatch?

    I've got mine in a fenced in area with no roof (open to the sky) and I'm watching it but well... Nothing ever seems to happen, it doesn't change colors like I was supposing it was supposed to. I've been assuming it's supposed to eventually go orange and then hatch but mine just stays white.

    Hey! It can vary slightly, but should take around 15-20 minutes. It's very picky on where it hatches as it needs a light level of 9, 10 or 11. You'll know when it's right as it will give off fire particles (like torches). Ignore the smoke particles as it will smoke no matter the light level.

    Have a look, https://github.com/TheOnlySilverClaw/Birdmod/blob/master/src/main/java/silverclaw/birds/common/entity/ai/EntityAIAvoidScarecrow.java

    It uses the armor stands as scarecrows and the 'scariness' depends on the value of armor you put on it, with a bonus for pumpkins. ;) Maybe needs some balancing, though.

    I actually was just experimenting with that. I put in 'EntityArmorStand' expecting it to say that it couldn't be defined as EntityLiving, but I was wrong xP Cheers for that though! I'll look at it later when I get back from my uni lectures.

    Excellent mod! You've managed to introduce all these diverse species while still making them look like they could have come with the default game!

    Quick bug report: in the newest version of 1.7.10, it would seem that the Vulture can't fly. It spreads its wings like it's flying, but otherwise stands perfectly still. If I push it off of a ledge while it's doing this, then it just falls, so I think there's something interfering with their ability to take off.

    I love mob mods, particularly those that add atmospheric animals, and I'm also a fan of bird wildlife in the real world. So... inevitably... (and I hope you don't take offense from this, I searched for an official "planned" or "already suggested" list but didn't find any)... I have several suggestions. Hopefully you can get some inspiration out of them!

    1. The ability to tame most, if not all, already-implemented birds

    I was very happy to see Parrots as companions with three modes of travel, but was disappointed I couldn't do the same with a Toucan or Cassowary. Could this be possible for the future?

    2. Birds of prey

    I'm pretty sure you have these planned for some point in the future, but I figured I'd mention it just in case, because birds of prey are amazing.

    - Eagle

    Different species for different biomes: Bald Eagle/Golden Eagle for forests and swamp, Harpy eagle for the rainforest, Steller's sea eagle for the ocean/coastal areas, etc. They would swoop into rivers or lakes and snatch up fish with their talons, and could build large aeries in trees.

    - Hawk

    Different species could include Red-tailed hawk, gray hawk, goshawk. They would primarily hunt small ground-dwelling creatures like baby animals or rabbits.

    - Falcon

    Different species could include Peregrine falcon, merlin, Gyrfalcon. They would primarily hunt other flying birds and bats.

    - Vulture Species

    Such as the majestic Bearded Vulture and the striking Egyptian Vulture

    - Owl Species

    Such as the Great Horned, barn owl, burrowing owl, snowy owl, etc.

    - Other

    Anything else that didn't fit into one of the above categories, like Osprey or Caracara.

    3. Falconry

    I have been waiting for a mod to add this for so long, but I don't think any have come close. If you ever do add birds of prey, I beg you to add some aspects of falconry along with them! Just some quick ideas here...

    - "Falconry" mode: when active, the bird of prey perches on your shoulder, ready for your command.

    - Cast Off: Sends your bird at a creature. If your target is another bird or a small animal (rabbit/chicken/pig maybe?), your bird will attempt to quickly dive at and pin the creature before killing it. (If you did this, pinning should probably be skipped for the sake of coding, but it would be very interesting as a way to subdue rare or difficult-to-catch birds.)

    - Harry: If the initial attack misses or you send your bird to attack a larger target, it will circle back around and swoop at the enemy, dealing some damage and inflicting (Slowness/Weakness/some debuff? It would be cool if the falconer player gained a damage bonus or guaranteed crit against enemies their bird has marked, but this might be too complicated.) This mode will continue until the enemy is dead or the player calls the bird off.

    - Blinding Attack: When your bird harries non-prey mobs, it has a chance to gouge the enemy's eyes, dealing extra damage and inflicting Blindness for a few seconds.

    -Retrieve: Your bird can pick up dropped items and bring them back to you. By default, the bird will retrieve the drops of whatever it killed, but you can also send it to a particular location to pick up an item.

    I think one of the possible ways to make some of these commands work is to have a gauntlet/jess item that the player can wield. (It would be great if the bird could sit on your wrist as well as the suggested shoulder, but I think mounting the bird to the shoulder requires less bothersome rendering issues.) When you press "R" or some other keybind while aiming in one spot, your bird will fly to this location and kill/attack if it's a creature, or retrieve any items if there are no mobs directly nearby. Although it would automatically return after the mob is dead or the item is retrieved, right-clicking with the gauntlet would call the bird back to you, regardless of whatever the bird is currently doing.

    Overall, I'd be satisfied with the most basic implementation of falconry... this is just a pipe dream here.

    4. Biome-Specific Bird Updates

    I have no idea what other birds you have planned, but adding future species in biome-themed updates would be pretty cool. For example, cormorants, puffins, and sandpipers for the ocean; birds of paradise, macaws, and the screaming piha (you know, THE rainforest sound effect: ) for jungles; herons, egrets and loons for swamps.

    I likey! I've been meaning to add falconry since the beginning, but I'd like to make the flight flawless before I do so. I think it would be a really neat addition :D In fact I did mean to start by adding a falconer's glove to tame the owls, but I never got around to it D:

    I have a general question that I'm posting around to various 1.8 mod forums that add new mobs. I've noticed on loading up "one to many" mods of this nature that I start getting an error:
    Server attempted to spawn an unknown entity using ID: {0} at ({1}, {2}, {3}) Skipping!
    In the process of researching, I found the below thread discussing registering entities using a system that doesn't have this "ID" conflict.
    skipping entity id crash
    I'm not looking to force developers' hands into using a different system, just confirming if the mod uses the old ID system or the new one so I can figure out which ones I'll have to consider if issues arise.
    [/indent]
    This mod is configured in the way that is stated as 'correct' on that website, so I believe that's the new system.

    does this workwith BOP?

    It does yep!

    Just a little update: The mod is now in its 1.0.2C version. This update adds the following:

    == BOTH 1.8 and 1.7.10 ==
    - Phoenix eggs (and the materials needed to craft them) can have their spawnings disabled via the config. Both in dungeons and also in nests.
    - There is also an option to enable/disable flying using the Phoenix.
    - The phoenix will no longer hover when not being ridden.
    - Woodpeckers now cling to all items that are wood material.
    - Some incorrect entries have been fixed in the bird book.
    - Cassowary are now hostile when attacked. This wears off after a while, just like pigmen.
    - Magpies, toucans, finches and pigeons no longer move their legs whilst flying.
    - Hitting a bird with the bird book when it is already logged will display the species of the bird.

    ======== 1.8 ========
    - No exclusive additions.

    ======= 1.7.10 ======
    - Fixed some of the new eggs not rendering correctly as entities.

    Mo' creatures messes up all spawning in general. I believe you can manually add spawns for the birds in Custom Mob Spawner's config. I haven't used it recently because of this, so this info may be some what out dated. If it still uses Custom Mob Spawner and you have it installed, try removing it? I don't think it required it.

    Whoa... Was this the reason?! I've spent the past couple of days trying to figure out why the birds spawned very rarely on a friends server who was using my mod and had no luck whatsoever. If this is the case, it's narrowed down the reason quite nicely and I can work on a fix ^^

    Quote from Sunconure11»

    Didn't you say cassowaries attack when attacked? Well for some reason, this is not happening for me on my SMP server. I am running 1.7.10 though.

    Ahhhh. That may be a fault my end. The 1.8 version is aggressive, but not the 1.7.10 whoops Dx

    Hi Pavo
    I have to say this update really made this mod special for me. So many nice birds in here.
    Adding the config file really helps too! I can see there are settings for all the birds, but is it possible to turn off phoenixes?
    I don't want phoenixes in my modpack as that is an additional flying method which unbalances our gameplay!
    From the config:
    phoenix {
    S:entityname=EB_Phoenix
    Regards, Rolf

    I didn't realise this would be a problem, but of course! I'll make a little update that I'll release tomorrow if I can. I'll let you know when :)

    A bit reluctant to add a perch for the phoenix as it's so big. How did it suffocate though, are you hatching your eggs in very narrow rooms? :P
