Paininabox posted a message on Thread O' Links
If this thread has ever helped you find something or has inspired you, then pay it back by paying it forward. Find a link, whether to thread, video, picture, or blog post, that has helped you and share it with others by posting in the thread.

Hey, I've been stalking the forums for quite a while since I started playing. I have slowly gathered a favorites list of threads that I thought were exceptionally inspiring, clever, inventive, useful, or all around awesome. I decided to share in the hopes that others would be similarly interested.

Some notes about how this thread is organized:
The list is divided into categories and sub categories and I've attempted to make it was straightforward as possible. There are many examples, however, where entries could easily be put in multiple categories, such as how a dispenser trap could be put under redstone or PvP. Since there are so many things here, I've marked standouts with an asterisk (*) to guide people that may be overwhelmed by the quantity of stuff here. I've also implemented a separate section of new entries that are 30 days or younger to help people who just want to check for updates. The new entries will be mirrored in their appropriate section in the "archived" list and will be deleted from the new entry section after 30 days.

Don't we get enough of these fake tear jerkers in chain mail? Look, people will grief or not grief regardless of this fable, guilt trips don't work. The only way to get a griefer to not grief is for them to build something they care about on the same server.

The fact that anyone would kill themselves over their stuff getting destroyed in a video game is not so much sad as it is pathetic. People are starving, children being born with HIV, women getting demeaned and raped, people murdered, and children impressed into militant groups in Africa. Excuse me if I can't find the tears for your unverified tale.

    Yeah, it's on CBS alright....

Frankly, if he can't shrug off one negative comment on the internet, then he should not be sticking his neck out. He's a nice guy and I like his stuff, but he's going to have to learn what governs the internet:

I've had worse said to my face, honestly. People are cruel.

Paininabox posted a message on So uh, what changed
This game is far, far from perfect, and I agree with the OP. I have not played minecraft nor even read the forums for quite a while now, and I was hoping the big promised bug fix release would have improved everything. It didn't. Biomes look terrible at their borders due to lack of blending, grass side texture color does not match the top on all settings, biome "islands" or fractures inside of other biomes usually along borders making them look even more terrible, performance fixes ala optifine and optimine, random floating masses of dirt floating in the air usually by mountains, lighting still messed up, a myriad of bed problems, powered minecarts don't work to push other carts in certain directions, plus all of the bugs that have been INTRODUCED into the BUG FIX PATCH like water freezing, etc. etc. etc.

I loved minecraft. Frankly, however, it's pretty mediocre now. Downgrade your minecraft to pre-biome alpha versions and walk around a bit and tell me it is not more beautiful in randomness due to lack of ugly biome transitions. Notch is a terrible worker and I'm tired of people beating around the bush to be "nice" or "grateful" or "tolerant" or "understanding" or "supportive" or blah blah blah.

This is a crappy, crappy development company. Mojang is substandard to the industry and I am infuriated that they will be looked up to because of their "success" story. They have no follow-through, they lack discipline to meet their own deadlines, they focus more on unreleased games and instead only put TWO people to finish their unfinished hit out of their 8+ person company, they lack a clear idea of what they want to do with the game, they work at an incredibly slow pace, and I am sick and tired of people worshiping the ground they walk on.

Skyrim, a massive massive game that was recently released (which if you're a gamer you should already know) has this many bugs whereas minecraft has this many. Skyrim has hundreds of THOUSANDS more lines of code than minecraft and runs more bugfree than minecraft, which has been alpha and beta tested by millions for years. Hundreds of the bugs in minecraft have been around for months, if not years unfixed. Dungeon Defenders, a game recently released from a small indie company out of Florida, has had literally 10 patches in the past month addressing game balance and bugs and content. Stronghold 3, recently released by firefly studios out of London, is so crippled by huge and massive balance and bug problems that reviews for it are as low as low as the 20's even though the original stronghold game is a classic hit.

Mojang is an embarrassment to the gaming industry, not a shining star. Their performance as a game development company is sub par and unacceptable. I realize few people will agree with me, particularly here where the Notch lovers and white knights will be quick to jump to the defense of Mojang even though they are adults and don't need to be babied like they'll break under the slightest weight of criticism. They're big kids, they can take it. A year and a half ago, I would have defended minecraft, but today it's all I can do to look at upcoming changes hoping they get their head on straight. Minecraft is a game concept accidently stumbled upon by an undeserving company, which proceeded to completely destroy it. Bugs are everywhere, performance (which shouldn't be a problem on almost any modern machine considering how blocky and low res it all is) is crappy, devs don't meet deadlines, content is added while whole other features are completely pointless/unusable (villages, powered minecarts, etc. etc. etc.), etc. etc. etc.

Unacceptable. Needless to say, I'm not even going to read a review on Scrolls when it's "released". I would rather give money to support companies that do a good job like Trendy Entertainment and Bethesda.

Paininabox posted a message on How Do You Feel About The Direction Minecraft Is Going?
No, I don't like where minecraft is going. It's too much RPG for me, because I like to play them and there are much, much better ones out there. Combat is too simplistic and the game too sandboxed for me to accept a bunch of half-assed bosses, enchantments, potions, alternate dimensions, pointless villages, etc. I like a break from the sandbox to fight some monsters and strike out on my own adventure of my own imagining, but by creating all of these focused RPG features (especially because they're done poorly) I think that it makes it difficult to impress your own story on a world that's slowly becoming more and more constricted.

Refocusing on terrain generation, new blocks, and fixing some of the ugly biomes would probably revive my interest. Right now, biomes don't blend, don't make sense in terms of geography, and views of scenery are so blocked by tall grass, dense forests, and mountains, that unless you get on top of one you can't see any great views like you could in previous versions.

However, I don't even really want to bother with arguing about it anymore. Every time you do, people jump on you screaming about how Notch is god's gift to mankind, that it's just beta, that you can downgrade, that you can play creative, that you can ignore what you don't like. But I can't. World generation is different, I need to constantly eat, I need to farm animals and food just to keep playing. The fact of the matter is that this is not the same game I fell in love with, which if you payed attention many others agree considering 90% of posters are only 4-6 months old on the forums. I'm siding with the silent majority that no longer play minecraft and don't read the forums because they frankly don't care to. I think it's hilarious that people assume everything is fantastic just because these kind of threads reach consensus as to how minecraft just keeps getting better and better. All of my friends have stopped playing for similar reasons.

And to those crying about how these threads have been popping up so much lately, well, you don't get it. It indicates that the game itself is fundamentally changing, which is a good thing. It also indicates that people love the game enough that they care to actually say ANYTHING at all about it in an attempt to fix it, as opposed to throw-away-and-forget 60 dollar a pop games that you EXPECT to play out, grow tired of, and forget and don't care enough to campaign on some flaming internet forums. How often do you really see big "Do you like the direction Battlefield is going?" threads going? Never. These threads are a testament of LOVE for the game, of concern about its future, of the strength of the game in the past, of the strength of the game in the future, of the strength of its community. People say this community is dying, but I see it only getting better. Difference of opinion breeds the best games, the best communities.

At least that's what I think.

I'm glad to see there are still some users who actually think before they post. This is basically what I've been saying in my signature's topic for a while, I wish more people could see things like you do.

I think this is grossly unfair. Just because you happen to disagree with us doesn't mean we don't "think", so please kindly lay off of the ad hominem. Frankly, the fact that most of the people that think minecraft is god's gift to the world have an argument consisting almost entirely of "NO U DUM", indicating that YOU don't think. It's fantastic that you still like the game, but it would be appreciated if you respected the opinions of your peers enough to not simply dismiss them out of hand.

As for the "you don't have to use ____ if you don't want to" arguments, there are several features that you cannot avoid using (hunger, new mobs, etc.). You're right, you may be able to mod away what you don't like, but that's not really a solution. The fact is, mojang is spending a LOT of time on features that aren't liked by numerous people, meaning that the game is stagnating and moving in directions that many don't like. It's their game to do with to develop as they want to, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. As a potential customer for more games, my opinion should and does matter.

As for the "it's BETA" argument, please. It's being "released" in one month's time, so it should almost be release quality NOW. I refuse to let Mojang hide behind the word BETA as if it's a shield from criticism. Firstly, this is not a beta. This is an alpha. Notch doesn't get to reinvent how an entire industry defines software stages just for the heck of it. As for it being "released", it has been released since the very first moment you could buy it in alpha. You know, like it was being RELEASED to the public, almost like it's the very definition of the word. The game's newest features are half baked, ill thought out, and oftentimes incomplete. I'm willing to cut them some slack because there are a few of them and new to the whole "running a company" thing, but the standard of quality for this game is going down and everyone is ok with it.

I agree with the OP. I thought minecraft was about getting resources and then being creative with them. Development of this game has definitely gone from improving the sandbox part of the game completely to the RPG part. Frankly, I do not understand why everyone seems to want this game to be an RPG when there are much, much better RPG's out there. Overly complicated potion system? How is that fun? Enchanting? What? Yet another half-baked alternate dimension that will probably be yet another waste of development time? How can they even consider making another dimension with the nether being so unpolished and useless? Achievements? For making a workbench, seriously? Stats? Like I care! Hunger? Why would I want to be tied down to my farm when farming isn't even frankly all that fun? Harder mobs? So how do I beat that, click my sword faster and duck out to regen health? Why is mojang pushing this game as an RPG when all the features he adds are half-baked and shitty and the combat consists of putting on armor, killing stuff with a diamond sword, and facerolling to victory? Villages? Ugly models and no real gameplay reason to have them other than to give the illusion of life? An ugly alternate dimension made with 6ish blocks in grand total that almost anyone just avoids because ghasts shoot at you constantly from 200-300 blocks away? Undergrounds so honeycombed by strongholds, ravines, abandoned mineshafts, and normal giant cave systems that you can literally almost walk to any location from any location without touching the surface or mining hardly at all, not to mention the fact that all of these "cool underground features" are constantly breaking into each other to the point where I found a stronghold almost completely destroyed by a ravine running through it and mineshafts everywhere. Maps that you can't share with other people without duping them in, and even then it's only the one map? Booster rails being so expensive and ineffective that there is almost no way to legitimately collect enough gold to build a rail line of significant length? Wolves that kill themselves off of cliffs and that can barely kill anything before dying itself? A dye system that I have yet to see anyone really actually use because it's such a pain? Forests so thick that you can't even walk through them without having to hack through a million leaf blocks? Grass that is ugly and choking the landscape? I obviously don't get the point of this game anymore.

I hated the Halloween update nigh on one year ago and sincerely tried to like every update since then. "Oh it's BETA" I see all the fanboys say that seem to think that mojang is so much of a child that they can't handle criticism because they try hard and they're "still working on it". Yeah, whatever. They're "releasing" minecraft in about a month, like it hasn't already been released by virtue of the fact that you could buy it. Minecraft is the brain child of a man that accidentally stumbled upon a winning game and then proceeded to completely misinterpret WHY it was successful in the first place and haphazardly drop in random and unrelated features as he felt like it until feature creep destroyed everything that was good about it. He made minecraft into terraria when terraria does it so much better. Tell me, who continues to play terraria? Everyone I know stopped because they had come, played, conquered, and left. Minecraft had lasting life because it was about what you could imagine, not getting to the end and killing a boss. This isn't the same game I loved. Minecraft slept around with rpg's and action games and adventure games and sandbox games and decided it wanted to be everything simultaneously and became an inferior version of everything.

Today, I deleted you, Minecraft. I sincerely hope people continue to love this game even when I don't. Maybe someday later I can "get it" again and have a blast like I did in the before-time. For now, though, we are divorced, minecraft. Playing you is like sleeping with a hooker in hopes of reliving the happiness of marriage.

Paininabox posted a message on 1.8 Mountains: A complaint
I agree, mountains in this game are pretty much sad shadows of what they ought to be. Firstly, the biome model is currently pretty poor for how mountains appear in real life. Biomes are roughly circular with random variation whereas mountains appear in ranges along tectonic plate borders (mostly). Secondly, mountains aren't properly shaped. In general, they have footprints that are too small relative to their height and their faces are altogether too sheer too often. Thirdly, mountain biomes don't have purposeful effects on the biomes around them. In many cases, mountain ranges split up different climates due to how their size affects weather. For example, in Chile the Andes mountains serve as a divider between the more coastal climate of the coast and the much more dry leeward side of the mountain range, so much so that the Atacama Desert is the driest in the world which is surprising considering how close it is to the coast.

In response to the "this game isn't supposed to be realistic", I don't feel think that the point of this thread is to suggest that mountains be realistic, just that they be better. The way it stands now, mountains are little more than sharp pointy things every once in a while that does little for the landscape. Mountains would be much more powerful and exciting if they formed into ranges, had a wider base and less sheer sides, and affected biomes around them a bit better. Maybe after that, they could move into things like creating canyons, plateaus, mesas, gulches, valleys, mountain passes, and other interesting geological features. I think that the real world still has a lot to teach minecraft about how to make cool terrain to explore and build on, even if the ultimate goal of the game isn't to make it realistic.

I say this coming from Montana. There's a reason why this state was named after mountains. Mountains done right could make this game so much more majestic and grand than it already is.

You do realize that when you cut down trees the leaves despawn and you can simply swing by later to grab saplings? I could understand being annoyed that you have to get sand from a desert or clay, but trees shouldn't be a problem past the first day of playing.

ChaosGuardian posted a message on Did the Terrain Become BORING? (UPDATE 6/5/13 - 1.7 is a biome update?)
    *NEWS*
    Update 6/5/13

Word has come out that 1.7 may include biome changes. Stay tuned.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Adventure Update was supposed to give us more motivation to explore, but instead the motivation was taken away. Here's why:

Many of the features included in the 1.7.3 generator that brought the game to life were unexpectedly removed when 1.8 hit our clients. Due to this, monstrous amounts of variety are now non-existent in Minecraft. Most of the problems with the generator today are due to limitation. With that being said, every seed is now basically identical, meaning there is WAY too much predictiveness in the terrain:

    LIMITED HEIGHT VARIATION

For instance, we can only find mountains in the Extreme Hills (EH) biome and the X-hills biomes (ForestHills, DesertHills, etc.) In the EH biome, height changes are forced, ALWAYS leaving us with a sloppy mess of turquoise spam reaching to the heavens. In the X-hills biomes, the same thing happens, except height changes hardly ever reach "mountain level."

So why is this bad? Although this brings us joyous mountains, they are never spread apart, or landlocked by flat land. Thus, if you find a mountain you are nearly 100% sure to find more and more. Also, when you see turquoise grass, you are 100% sure to find mountains. It's predictability at its greatest. This is bad because the pre-1.8 generator contained more height variation. You could literally find any type of landscape. Just look at the variety of landscapes you could find in pre-1.8 in comparison to current generation:

As you see from this picture, the only way to achieve max-height terrain is to visit the EH biome. No, X-hills will not allow you to do this. What we do know is that EH biomes and X-hills together give us a somewhat decent array of variation, but 1.7.3's array was a LOT bigger. Want proof?

In this image, not only is there an overhang and a thin rocky formation, but there is flat land isolating both of these. There is no way to represent full random height variation in one picture, but this may give you a hint as to what it may be. What else can we bring to the plate?

Beta 1.8+ babies may not know what this is. Here is a picture of the most popular seed before the terrain was ruined. Glacier was its name. Now, this isn't the best picture of the Glacier Mountains, but I will attempt to describe it. Imagine a seasonal forest with mountains sprawling across the whole biome. This may seem like the equivalent of today's ForestHills sub-biome but it is not! An area such as the Glacier Mountains was not something you would see every five minutes. It was found by seed-hunting -- another damaged factor due to the 1.8 terrain changes. Ladies and gentlefish, this seed may just describe what height variation is all about. You see, if you exited the area of the mountains, there'd be terrain nothing like it. You would see occasional hills and land easy to build on! And guess what? This all happened within biomes of the same name. There were no limitations nor restrictions.

Now before you start replying (and I urge you not until reading ALL of this post), let me show you what the 1.7.3 generator could do, even though people may think it wasn't possible.

The picture above IS Beta-1.7.3 terrain, not Release-1.3.2. Yes, flat land was possible. REMEMBER, we are not asking for the previous generator! We want the current one improved so that everyone is happy!!!!

    FORCED ENDLESS CAVES

Another flaw of the current generator is the underground generation. There are simply too many caves, and this problem is existent in every world, just like our height variation problem. Often, I find myself bored in-game, because within the first five minutes of a newly created world, I'm already set for life because I found a cave that extends on and on. Literally, we can now find stacks of iron ore and enough diamond to last us half a year within the first hour of gameplay!

So why is this bad? It is understandable some people may like having extensive caves, as do I, but not all the time. Minecraft always needed more challenge, and this cave problem definitely worsens the issue. Back in pre-1.8, there were caves of varying sizes -- the same amount of variety that the mountains had. Now we are limited to seemingly endless tunnels and caverns. Don't you miss "conquering" a cave in less than 10 years? I know I do.

Don't believe me? Look at this:

You could say "that's just one area in one world." WRONG. Look at this:

    Want more?

This is absurd. The people who enjoy extensive caves are sure happy, but the people who want caves of varying sizes should be enraged!

SLOPPY SAND BEACHES & ABSENCE OF GRAVEL BEACHES

Another problem with current terrain generation includes the formation of beaches and the absence of gravel beaches. Gravel beaches were an undeniably cool feature to pre-1.8 generation, and Mojang had no reason to remove them when the Adventure Update hit our clients. Remember the "404 Challenge?" Well now it's impossible to have anything merely resemble it (except for the extensive cave system, of course). Sandy beaches are now always sloppily generated, therefore lowering the rate of variety within every world.

Why is this bad? It is obvious that the removal of gravel beaches upsets many people, as it does to me. Sandy beaches on the other hand definitely need work. Take a look at this current beach:

..Well that was awkward. The generator seems to just replace random coasts with sand blocks. Face it, pre-1.8 had things like this as well, maybe not as common, but definitely existent. However, pre-1.8 also had good looking beaches! This is what we call VARIETY -- when things stop reappearing over and over again.

Ok, admitted, the picture above may be a little biased. Let's throw in a picture that an opposer gave to me:

This is someone's example of a perfect beach. You've got to be kidding me. First off, two things need to be pointed about before getting into the specifics.

    1. This is set on the Large Biomes option. Good terrain should be available to those who play on the default setting!

    2. This "beach" is adjacent to a jungle biome. Beaches next to jungle biomes tend to look a bit nicer in comparison to those that are adjacent to other biomes. Therefore, this picture is a little biased itself.

As said before, the main problem with today's beaches is that they are always going to have this form. Only one or two horizontal lines of sand are actually on sea-level. Again, we had crappy beaches and good beaches in 1.7.3 and this is good because of the variety it brought to the game. We all shouldn't be able to reach preffered terrain everywhere we go, right? That's the challenge and fun!

Take a look at this picture of a pre-1.8 beach:

Now that's what I call a good looking beach! Look how many consistent sand blocks are actually on sea-level. Compare that to the one or two lines of consistent sandy-coasts in current generation. Remember, pre-1.8 also had crappy beaches, which is a good thing because it distributed variety into every world.

Keep in mind, this thread is NOT about the existence of oceans, the "RPG" features, the existence of the new world generation features, biome size, random placement of biomes, and possibly more. We also do not endorse the return of past generators or a new world option.
If you want to discuss these said features, you are in the WRONG THREAD.

WHY MODS ARE NOT THE SOLUTION:

    Quote from Shreaders »
Mods are a temporary fix to a long-term problem. Most of the terrain altering mods out there do not even live up to the standards that are put forth in this thread. They all are attempts to bring back 1.7 map generation into the current terrain. If you're asking Isn't this what we want? No, and this means that you did not read the full thread. So please go back, re-read the thread, and then re-post.

What we want done to the terrain is have it tweaked to add more height variety per biome. We want the structures and everything that was added since 1.8 except for the flat, dull, boring land. Mods do not fix this as they create ugly jumbled up and chewed up land masses all over the place (Which those types of land masses can also be neat if harnessed and used correctly by mojang.)
Did not know that? Re-read the thread, and re-post.

So for those of you who keep coming on here advertising different mods that we can use: 45 people have mentioned the same thing before you: so do not bother as it will not silence us. We feel the current map generation needs to be altered to satisfy all of Mojangs player base not just 25% (and yes those numbers are accurate .. the poll for this change is at 75% yes and 25% no) Did not know that? Simple.. Re-read the thread, and then re-post.

    Quote from Mattressi »

I'm a little confused that this isn't a bigger complaint: I mean, swamps look ugly, sure and there are a few bugs here and there, but BIOMES ARE ABSOLUTELY RUINED. Seriously, I can't even play anymore - I'm just so bored by the landscape. I like mountains with trees (regular, pines and birch) and snow. I can have either mountains OR snow OR trees. Awesome -_-
Seeds are completely pointless now - all they do is determine your spawn point. Might as well just use one seed and ask at the start if you want to start in the biome with trees, the biome with mountains or the other biomes with nothing in them.

Has anyone tried tweeting jeb about this (I'm pretty sure Notch isn't working on Minecraft anymore)? To me, this is the single largest issue with Minecraft currently. Varied and crazy terrain was one of the greatest things about Minecraft pre-1.8. Now, Minecraft's terrain is more boring than in real life. Realism I could possibly stand (in a game with creepers and which originally became popular because of its crazy and interesting randomly generated terrain), but it simply isn't realistic to have no snow on any mountains, to have no trees (one tree per chunk doesn't count - I'm talking forests) anywhere where it snows, to have almost completely flat terrain everywhere except in one specific area which has huge mountains and nothing else.

Some have said it's this way because of NPC villages - if that's the case, I'd much rather have no NPCs at all if it will bring back an interesting world.

Please, can someone here who uses twitter contact jeb and link him to this thread or ask if he realises that Minecraft's terrain generation is horrible and boring now, and whether he intends to fix it? If Mojang think it's fine as it is and don't fix it, I honestly won't be playing anymore. Bring back variety and craziness or lose those of your customers who enjoyed (above ground) exploration, building in unique locations, searching for the best seed, admiring the views and even just doing other things in a world that didn't feel like a void.

Moving mountains to a single biome was simply the worst idea in all of gaming history. And even those look bland.I want the extremely random worlds that made Minecraft be awesome!

    Quote from Mamrok »
The terrain is a lot LESS complex than it used to be. What made the old generator more complex is, that the
physical terrain overlapped with all biomes, so that we had a lot of combinations. The biomes now are very homogenic and are seperated from each other with surgical cuts. 1000 blocks of flat forrest *poof* 1200 blocks of flat desert *poof* 1000 blocks of treeless extreme mountains *poof* 1000 blocks of flat forrest. very complex...

Also the additon of ravines and rivers doesnt have anything to do with how the terrain and biomes are created. They are just superimposed over the landscape.

    Quote from giraffeartillery »
This more realistic terrain generation is incredibly bland. Once you see one biome, you have basically seen them all.

The old one was varied and the biome mixing created some nice landscapes. Also spawning on a beach made it feel like you washed up on the shores of a unknown land. I wouldn't mind some modifications to the underground how ever.

    Quote from Domino »
The sizes are perfect, but they need more variety in each one.

    Quote from Flygonair »
I was gonna post a hate comment, but once i looked at the screenshots i realised you were right! I haven't seen any awesome looking mountain formations since 1.0.0! All i've been seeing is the same old plains, swamps, and pine forests!

    Quote from MineCrak »
I used to be ok with there being some caves, but now the entire damned underground is swiss-cheesed with them... Now I hate them.

Perhaps the people who love the endless caves are playing the game in Peaceful or Creative mode. Caves are a whole different matter in Normal difficulty. They are constantly getting in the way of my mines and underground constructions.

I would rather have fewer but more epic caves or actual caverns then an endless ant farm of caves everywhere I dig..

    Quote from xlea99 »
I kind of used to hate people who said the terrain was boring... but it is REALLY flat. I guess I have to agree now. While I'm in love with oceans and mushroomlands and jungles, there is not as much interesting stuff in the world. I really wish that jeb would put back in what notch took out: Mountain landforms.

By that I mean not a mountain biome, but allowing allowing mountains to spawn in any biome on their own. That was one reason that the 1.7.3 generator was so friggin amazing.

If Jeb made it so that mountains could spawn in the same sort of way as lakes, then things would get a lot better. Then, mountains would be spawning in forests, giving us back that good-ole' tree filled mountain range we all love. It could spawn in Praries, to allow villages to be at the top of the world. It could spawn in deserts, to give us back those sand falls. They could spawn in oceans, so you could find just a random huge mountain in the ocean, kind of like a survival island. Heck, they could even spawn in swamps. Allowing for some pretty cool crap to happen.

Also, Jeb needs to put back the gravel beaches. I loved the look of those, and they just made things look so good.

    Quote from Wiggycat314 »
I have been a heavy Minecraft player since Alpha 1.2.0_02 when I first started playing. It wasn't the mining or the monsters that urged me to play; it was the sense of adventure. Most of the time, when I make a new world, I don't plan on building, I spend most of the time exploring the unknown and seeing what Minecraft has to throw at me.

When the ability to use seeds came out in Beta 1.3, it was then that my sense of exploration really started to rise. So many words and letters to type, so many worlds, but so little time. I loved it, each world had it's own uniqueness to it. If you managed to find a very nice world, you knew that this world was yours and no one else had one like it (unless you shared the seed).

When 1.8 came out, it really hit me hard. There was little to no variety in the worlds anymore. Seeds (in my opinion) were then obsolete. What's the point of sharing seeds when every world looks the same.

    Quote from Creative_Explorer »
It is a fact that the terrain has less variety in it than before.

    Quote from Frogging101 »
I don't know why, but there are way way way too many caves. I don't recall there being this many before 1.8. I like exploring caves, and it's cool to navigate the enormous mineshafts. But only to a certain point. After spending hours and hours in a seemingly endless cave system, it just gets boring and repetitive. The cave system that I've been in since I started this world 3 days ago is just way too big. I dug a staircase mine type thing for a bit, just to collect a few ores to get me started. Within about 5-10 minutes I found my self in a cave system. 3 days later, I'm still in the cave system. I've seen about 3 ravines, destroyed 2 cave spider spawners, gotten lost in 2 different abandoned mineshafts and maybe 20 different caverns. I have half a chest full of coal, and the other half is iron, gold and a few diamonds.IT NEVER ENDS.

I love enchanting, I love the new biomes, I love all of the new features, and there isn't one I would ever want removed from the game. I miss the old world though. The new world isn't the same, it doesn't even compare. I'm sorry to all those people I insulted back when the adventure update went live. I'm sorry because I know why you were upset.

I wouldn't be against Mojang hiring a guy on full time to do nothing but work on the terrain, as long as it gets done.

Also, is the Bukkit team actually still part of Mojang? I thought they were hired on and since then I've heard very little out of the progress they are supposed to be making.

Here's a rundown of how I think they are splitting their efforts. I'm thinking Bukkit got there, wanted to finish working on the Mod API, opened up the core program and realize that it was just a bunch of empty classes that would require a ton more time than they figured. Then 1.4 was held back to compensate.

Meanwhile, Jeb and Dinnerbone get to work on RPG stuff because Dinnerbone really only knows how to work with entities and Jeb is really only good at picking up the slack that Notch created when he would have his brain-farts so infrequently since the beginning of 1.8pre.

Then Notch leaves after delivering terrain so uninspired that he forgot to add roses, snow, and mountains (Really!? How can some people think current gen is better than 1.7.3 when it didn't even launch with ROSES and SNOW!?), Jeb takes up the torch of the entire game, makes beaches and X-hills their own biomes because he has no idea what mess of cobwebs Notch put up, and here we are with vertical beaches, endless biomes of flat terrain, and mountains that are so forced that even their heights are the same...

And some people still think 1.8 and up is better than 1.7.3? The development process alone is horrible enough to be deal-breaker.
    Quote from xBella »
Gah. I honestly can't stand the 1.3.2 terrain generation at all anymore. If I play singleplayer, it's always with my 1.7.3 .jar because it's just an eyesore to look at the current terrain generation. The terrain of 1.7.3 makes it seem like a whole new game. Honestly, I love jungles and swamps but I would trade it and NPC villages for the 1.7.3 terrain. That doesn't mean I want Jeb to just re-add 1.7.3 terrain and dump jungles and swamps, I just want him to improve it.
What happened to the savannahs? It bugs me so much to see a desert next to a jungle. I don't even know why they removed the temperature system. I miss the beaches and the gravel beaches that were everywhere. Beach houses were possible back then. If you wanted a proper beach house now, you'd have to have a tiny 2x2 house just to fit it in the beach. It also annoys me a lot when people tell me to use Large Biomes if I want better beaches. Why should I have to use Large Biomes to enjoy a feature that was once perfect? We don't need the 1.7.3 terrain generator back, we need the current one improved.

    Quote from MrDenco

The media is highly conservative?! You have got to be kidding me.

    Fox News is, anyway.

    Quote from MrDenco

    Why I hate Obama:

Failed stimulus (40% or something went to other countries)

Complete Republican lies. The stimulus greatly improved the economy. Don't believe me? Here's to copy pasting:

is stimulus package passed in February of 2009. After that, things started improving. If you'll look at this NASDAQ chart and zoom out to the five year view, you'll notice that the stock market started improving right at the beginning of 2009.

Then look at the unemployment rate. Notice that a few months after the stimulus passed, the unemployment rate started going down dramatically, completely reversing itself.

    Quote from MrDenco

, his degenerate and bloated healthcare plan,

The ACA is a good thing. It provides health care affordably for those who need it, while ensuring that people who can afford health don't force other people to pay for their's. It also greatly improves Medicare's budget so that it can last for many more years.

    Quote from MrDenco

his idiotic believe that someone else made your business happen,

OK. Let's pretend that the "You didn't build that" comment actually did meant that, even though it very clearly didn't. Obama stated later that despite what the Republicans are pretending, that was not what he said nor what he meant.

    Quote from MrDenco

his constant complaining of Bush making his job impossible,

Well Bush certainly isn't making it any easier. Go back, look at the stock market and the unemployment rate that I posted earlier. All of the downward trends started with Bush, and ended with Obama.

    Quote from MrDenco

he acts like an idiot (swearing on national tv, all of his damn golfing, lying, phrases like "Its like the special Olympics" and acting like a 3 year old),

He has taken 1/3 the vacation days of Bush and 1/2 that of Reagan. That stuff is opinionated bull.

    Quote from MrDenco

constantly complaining that the rich are too rich (****ing get over it),

MrDenco's constant complaining about Obama (****ing get over it). /sarcasm. It's a serious issue, and it needs to be addressed. I don't complain that Romney complains about the economy too much. Get over yourself.

    Quote from MrDenco

the lies (Romney wants to put y'all in chains, yes I know it was from biden),

He was making a metaphor, and you know it. Just before that he was talking about "unshackling Wall Street". There is no reason to think that he actually believes that Romney wants to put you in actual chains.

    Quote from MrDenco

endorsing cap and trade, his tax hikes, (on all Americans,),

Overall, taxes have gone up very little under Obama, for the middle class. In fact, tax rates are at a 30 year low. But you have fun repeating those worn out Republican lies.

    Quote from MrDenco

    his hatred of big companies,

    For good reason

    Quote from MrDenco

and domestic production (laws and taxes on big corporations make them want to move away to other countries),

[citation needed] Outsourcing was not started under Obama. He has discouraged outsourcing from the start. Romney has not.

    Quote from MrDenco

the amount of food stamps are at now,

Good, he increased the food stamp program. That's a good thing

    Quote from MrDenco

the fact that government college loans made the cost of college increase,

Because the House keeps blocking him

    Quote from MrDenco

    his lying Obama "Turd team",

Which doesn't lie at all. Note that Romney and Ryan's speeches were both pounded to death by independent fact checkers. Obama's truth team hasn't been at all. Now what does that signify?

    Quote from MrDenco

him complaining that Romney didn't release his tax records, (He has released want he needs, mr Obama if you care so much about freedom then why force them to release information that doesn't need to be public)

Because it provides information that the American people need to help them decide who to vote for. Romney, in one fell swoop, could discredit Obama and Reid, but doesn't. It's quite clear he's got something to hide.

    Quote from MrDenco

, him being a narcissistic, (credit for Osama, which if it was up to him would have never happened),

Not true at all. He authorized the mission and supported it from the start.

    Quote from MrDenco

    fast and furious etc.

    What about it?

    Quote from MrDenco

Oh and now everyone is like: "It is natural to hate people who are currently in office!" Well it just so happens that Obama sucks.

Really? Someone who reversed the trend on the economy, to help steadily improve the economy, sucks? Someone who stands up for the rights of all, sucks? Someone who ended a costly, pointless war, sucks? Someone who revised the terrible US health care system with a far better one, sucks?

You really need to stop listening to Republican propaganda and start looking up actual facts.

    Quote from MrDenco

There are people who regret voting for him even!! Most of my mom's friends say that they have paid more in taxes, and are doing worse than 4 years ago!

And there are people who regret not voting for him!

Anecdotal evidence will get you nowhere.

    Quote from MrDenco

As a note, I do not, will never think that taxes should be lower for the rich than the middle and lower classes. But saying that the rich should be taxed to oblivion is not right. There is no doubt is is crazy that millionaires are paying 15%. I blame that on everyone in washingtion.

Why shouldn't the rich be taxed more? 15% is less than the average American. The rich can live on being taxed more, and their money can go to people who can't, and to reducing the deficit/debt.

RobertMorbeck posted a message on 1.8 Mountains: A complaint
*EDIT* This post went way to far.. when i made it, i didnt think it would make this much discussion. The lil' paragraph below was actually posted by mistake, and somehtin happend to my other 3 paragraphs. They have been re-done.

1.8 mountains. When I first heard about em, a new, high mountain biome, i was happy. I love mountains.... or at least the 1.7 ones.
1.8 mountains are high, yes, but they suck. Almost all mountains have overhangs, weird arches, or massive cavern holes. Sure, some are nice, but not enough. What im saying, is, that the mountains of 1.8 are cold, dreary, but most of all unrealilistic.

    ---------------------------------------------------

One of the major problem with the mountain biomes are the lack of green. In 1.7, the mountains I loved to build on were those green, forested hills. In 1.8, all mountains that have any height at all to them have been replaced by ugly, cold towers of dirt and stone Notch calls "mountains" There are two main ways to fix this, described below.

I think that the lower <85y areas of the mountain biomes should have vallys. Vallys would incorporate other biomes into them. For instance, the lower part of a mountain should be covered with trees near forests and grasslands near grasslands. This would make mountains noticably nicer, and make them fit in more with the surronding environment. Second, there should be an altitude grass shader to fix the ugly grass. Sure, the ugly grass fits in well up high, but where the lower parts of the mountains meet the other biomes... the mountain grass looks horribly out of place. As the elevation increases, though, the grass should slowly change from its original color to the blueish color we have right now.

    ---------------------------------------------------

I also think that mountains should change their shape to incorporate less overhangs and arches. I think the these features should be more of a rewarding expeierence to find, and not just be common as dirt in the mountain biome. Natural looking, real-life mountains would be a better fit. The main features of mountains should be cliffs and slopes, not other ****.

Another note: Desert mountains should be made, covered with sand and sandstone. That would look pretty cool :tongue.gif:

If you have any feedback, suggestions, or comments be sure to post.
