Well, erm, find out your controls first and then practice them, too. Read the wiki and watch videos on mobs, and how much damgae they do. Watch someone play through Vech's Super Hostile maps, to rid your fear of mobs. Mods are boring, and playing with friends helps rid you of the isolating feel, though it is nice to feel that sometimes.
First focus on resource collection for a while, and once you have a lot, get with some friends and build like a mini city. Kind of like the Mindcrack or Mianite servers. This is what I did and we've had tons of fun.
Why not start by playing with friends and then focus on resource collection? That way you'll be on the same grounds as your friends instead of waiting for them to catch up.
I prefer the survival aspect. Try not dieing for a while, and use hard mode. Play with others, no plugins just vanilla. Get some friends together, have them help support you.
Get 7 wood, gather 16 foods, then go and get around half a stack of iron, then go mine for diamonds gathering resources along the way. Once your inventory is full
Since I've only been around minecraft since 1.2, (Wow, it has been a long time! :O) I don't really have this debate. I find minecraft as a game is more relaxing than the minecraft of old (beta 1.7) but definitely better, as there is more that is being added for every type of player who plays it.
Some video game player's who played minecraft back in its old days expect it to be more exciting and high danger/adventure. Some players who were around since peaceful mode expect it to be relaxing and calming.
What I do is find a seed with a large island and live there, collecting resources and surviving during the day, then going on a rampage to kill every mob I see at night. Its quite fun, and involves strategy and different tactics as you hunt down each mob.
I know now that creepers take 4 hits to kill with a stone sword, skeletons take 2 and spiders as well. Zombies are fine if you rush them, but spiders can be tricky. Luring a skeleton under a tree to kill is the best way without taking damage, but if theres more than one mob coming after you use him to your advantage. Creepers you take one hit once, then back of, another one, then back off, then finish them off with two more before they explode.
Doing challenges such as this that limits your minecraft playing style will help you become a better player and makes playing more fun then just girding mob drops or such, and sleeping at night.
Oak Forests are nice because of the color and amount of wood. I usually start building here, then move to a more advanced building biome such as extreme hills, jungle and taiga. Those biomes are hard to start off in, but a cool place to build ones base.
Reason for joining: I want a different type of experience on minecraft pe. A white-listed realms server would be new for me, as I have only been on non-whitelisted external ones. Those servers were horrid to play on, with griefers, haters, and just bad people galore. Usually, within a few seconds of joining a new one I was killed without being able to even have a polite conversation or to play minecraft as it was intended to. Most servers on pe these days are awful, bad quality and will except just about anyone as long as they ask. I am personally looking for one with friendly people who I can actually play with. I know this is the waiting list but would be overjoyed if you accepted my application letter. Thanks for hearing me out.
Do you grief?: No. I do not enjoy destroying other people creations for pure pleasure and am a little OCD with creeper explosions. If I did take something from another player, such as chopping down a tree in their farm, it would be renewable and I would be sure to replant. This was one of my problems with the other servers. Survival practically RELIED on griefing others. Not the type of minecraft expericent I was looking for.
And finally:

I prefer a touch of both.

Anyway, could you add me please? I know that the spots already might be full but it would be fun to play on realms.
