I'm still working with the mapper, but it's been a bit slower since I started a job a little while ago.

Printing out JPG has been in mind for a while; it has better applications with printing larger blocks.

The simple way the rendering is done now causes the bleeding over, and it's on the list of things to be fixed.

It hasn't stopped, but it was delayed for a couple of months due to school. I'm getting back to fixing things, and an update should be out soon. At this point, it's about time for most of the code to be rewritten/fixed to be more portable, since I want to open the source soon.

posted a message on How do you make map generators?
It's called procedural generation (google it).

    http://www.gameprogrammer.com/fractal.html

Basically, use a random number generator and create arbitrary rules that depend on the random numbers for adding things to a map.

@godslam Have you tried using the -useminimalram option? By default, the program uses 1 GB of RAM while it's running. Alternatively, you could PM me a copy of the map to see if I can find what could make it crash otherwise.

@Rangelkent I'm wanting to get caching implemented soon so the render time would be reduced.

Yes, I've found out that after I tested your program. Although, first time I tested your program it took over 10 minutes, and second time it was below 2 minutes. Same time as mine when I'm using 2 threads, although a tiny bit slower.

I meant file caching as in how NTFS remembers recently accessed files, so the second rendering time is always shorter.

    Quote from McTwist »
I use a separate thread for updating those values. It sleeps each loop, so it wont take up any special CPU time.

I kinda meant that the drawing routines may waste a small amount of time from the amount of drawing it does. Earlier, I wasted 4 out of 20 seconds of rendering time on a small map because the console was printing out each number from 1-~3000. I figure if you can't read each number that's on the screen, it's probably unnecessary to update that fast (despite how fancy it looks).

    Quote from McTwist »
I think I'm counting all files, meaning that it also counts files that is not part of the chunks. I'll see what I can do about it.
Edit: This is not critical and it's harder to fix than I thought.

My program does the count when it's iterating over the files and finding things that are specifically labeled c.<x>.<z>.dat (Boost library makes directory iterating relatively easy).

For benchmarking, what sort of setup are you using (file caching affecting times)?

I poked your program, and it tried rendering World 1 by itself. The render time is similar to my program when I add the -t 2 option to your program.

I noticed that the program info window flickers a lot while it's rendering. Is there a need to display every single change immediately, or is that your preference? I noticed that I lost a few seconds of time in my program a while ago because the console spent extra time trying to render each number update to the screen.

Also, right-click->Properties for the map folder (chunks only) says 2,996 files (in Windows XP), but your program reports 3001.

You could also make some test pictures for your other rendering modes and place thumbnails on your first post.

    V.1.10 Nov. 3,2010
-Fixed -fullname/-replacename creating ".png" files (missing variable when cleaning up names).
-Added (-caveRange), works similar to -sliceRange.
-Added (-doublePixel), which adds more texture to blocks that have a better defined thickness. Causes rendering to take more time (50% longer when map is precached by file system). Applies to oblique type maps only. Probably needs more tweaking.
-Can also use (-nether) to select the nether map (maps with have "-nether" name attached for -hell or -nether).
-Reworked cave colors: gray - unlit areas, yellow - lit areas, red - lava, blue - water.

Currently, the resolution of the map is basically pixel = block. Increasing the block size will roughly increase the file size of the map by about block size squared.

I've got a fix for it, just testing some other features before it's released. The map error is probably because the program doesn't support Unicode yet. For now, make sure the path contains only characters from the basic ASCII set.

    V.1.09 Oct.31,2010 (Halloween)
-Added (-hell) for rendering the hellish-looking dimension that was added for Halloween. The region is basically a large cave, so there isn't an efficient way (yet) to display the features in it without exposing some of the smaller cave areas.
-Hopefully fixed the zoom in/out bug on OpenLayers maps (inconsistency with the picture tiler).
-Removed the border CSS styling for the HTML body of an OpenLayers map, since it conflicts with mouse coordinates in Mozilla Firefox at the moment.
-May have fixed the error with one parameter not making the program work.

    1.09 Download:
    https://sites.google.com/site/orangexpt ... ects=0&d=1

Kinda in a hurry to get this out; surprisingly, I fixed the zoom bug. The white/blacklist names for the new blocks are currently named:
    "Pumpkin",
    "Brimstone",
    "Glueblock",
    "Hellpowder",
    "Portal", and
    "Pumpkin lantern"

You should be able to guess which ones they represent for now. Will be revising some things over the next week, hopefully. Currently making a -whereami function (it's broken for oblique maps atm). Maybe I can finally get annotations working since the locations are fixed now.
