Play on a server with Bukkitcraft and the Essentials plugin. You get access to a command called /nick which allows you to change the name that is displayed in the chatbox.
I'd never change my name, and I don't support the ability to do so. It would primarily be used for trolling and bypassing bans.
I don't think you read my post quite all the way through. Bans would not be bypassable because the ban would go to the account name, not the user/in-game name.
However, trolling would be somewhat possible. It seems many have been suggesting some sort of method by which the player's account name and username are both shown when hitting Tab to avoid confusion if two people have the same name or something of the sort.
Being so, I will add this to the main post(or try to, I'm not the best with forums and their many functions) as a necessary feature if username changes were to be implemented.
I agree with this. Though, your friends might mistake you for someone else. To prevent this, look at the following:
An user was called 'Steve100'. He disliked this name, so he changed it to 'TheFieryOne'.
When he said something in the MP chat, it would appear:
Steve100 "TheFieryOne": Check my new nickname!
And his nickname would appear over his head.
Also, bans, whitelist, OP and the such would count by the Username, not the Nickname, so this prevents any trouble.
This is also an excellent suggestion, and it seems it would prevent confusion as stated. I actually doubt this would be hard for Mojang to implement because I believe I have seen mods that utilize this method when nicknaming.
59-63 FPS on Singleplayer world with Fancy graphics, max brightness all particles, smooth lighting, normal render(if I go above normal I get lagspikes of 10-20 FPS every few seconds, and I don't use my 64-bit Java), Max FPS performance(desktops for the win! Unlimited power to Minecraft!), clouds on, and bobbing on.
So pretty much average FPS for my average settings for my average computer. Woo!
actually it would be a good idea but not to pay. maby once a month. 6 at the max, becuse i want a diffrent username not rhj91 and i dont want to have to pay, or you coud create sub accounts that only last 1 day and you cant use the same username more than once in a month.
Bumping this post. Also, it seems a limit has been suggested. This would be an excellent thing to add, maybe a once per month change to prevent name changes every day or something. I don't think a set limit should be integrated; however, this is more opinion for me. I think I time limit, if possible, would be a better option.
However, on the topic of limits, they may be harder to implement than just a in-game-name-changing system with unlimited use. More factors to regulate and integrate, to me, make it overly complicated. But, this is more of an opinion than anything. If it was no major task to do, a limit would make this system even better.
This comes down to a matter of opinion(duh?). Personally, I loved 1.2 when I joined Minecraft. I loved it up to 1.8, then I started to not like it as much. In the older Minecraft, I had the best time doing simple stuff, like making cake, and trying to find wolves to tame and keep as dogs, or staring at the never-changing moon from my house's roof. I recently invested in one of those version things, and it was just how I remembered it, just as fun. No food bar, pigs with flat faces, shooting arrows at 950 rounds per minute, the simple things like that. The world was simple, yet so intriguing. And now... cake isn't fun because of the hunger bar. Fun isn't fun because of the hunger bar. Bows are better now, I will say, and some of the new parts are cool. But...potions aren't fun. Enchanting isn't fun. Breeding is cool, mooshrooms are not. Finding caves full of mushrooms was fun, islands of them are not. The Nether is still okay, but Pigmen and Ghasts were the best.
Basically, the old Minecraft was just complex enough to not be overwhelming, but simple enough to have charm and fun. The new Minecraft is very overwhelming. There are so many features, it's become a bit ridiculous. I tried explaining Minecraft to a friend and he couldn't understand much of it, mainly just the build and survive aspect, not all this potionmaking and enchanting and hunger and stuff.
However; the new Minecraft does have some good perks that now that I think about it, I couldn't go without. The main one is Creative Mode and the new Superflat world. I can build anything and everything now, with no worries and unlimited supplies. My imagination is free, not restricte by a healthbar or gravity. A few features have been nice or funny, like the new language options, the performance options, sprinting, more mob drops of varying use(porkchops were cool, but steak and chicken were even better), and definitely some of the performance/glitch fixes. I remember chunk errors being rampant in 1.2, but I see none now.
All in all, currently MC has ups and downs. Maybe Notch should add a setting or something allowing one to generate a world from Alpha or Beta, Creative, Survival, or Hardcore. So like the new game modes with the old Minecraft. Maybe.
Anyways ill explain, mojang said No username changes in the help system soooo.... until someone either tries to implement this feature no one can change their username (Whoever made the website said Choose Wisely :smile.gif: )
Do you know how long that website has been up? I believe since 1.0 was released. Before 1.0, three, four million players with Minecraft accounts? The Help section originally said something along the lines of "this might be added later" regarding namey changing. The "choose wisely" part of that has only been in Help for what, two and a half months? Versus, what, two years of players making accounts without this warning? More people did not receive any warning regarding account naming and its permanancy. Besides, this statement is not even placed where new account makers can easily see the permanent account name policy. I know I didn't check the Help section when I joined, and I think the help section consisted of videos of how to survive your first night back then.
So even though new users can eventually find this policy, being that it isn't directly presented to them, some 3-4 million others, those who make up the majority of the community, were generally unaware of the permanent name policy.
this. yuyuhakushi would have been my "game name" if this game worked like pretty much every character naming mechanism game out there.
I ALSO did not know registering for the minecraft.net would be the same username for multiplayer, and not something different you assign once in the game... seriously, they should tell you that earlier, before you pay up.
if you are such a LotR fan you want "Legolas", so be it. Just dont expect it to be rare xD
either find a name and stick with it, or be somewhat creative and make up your own, combining stuff as necessary.
I vomit in my mouth everytime I see a Jimmy_67 or something like that, people who prefer to use their generic name with a modifier because they can't/dont want to think of something originally creative.
The "before you pay up" is truly important. As of my knowledge, this has not been stated when signing up for Minecraft. It sure wasn't in Beta 1.2, a year ago. However, I don't think Mojang should use this disclaimer to play off in-game name changes, in the essence that "there is a disclaimer, so we don't need to allow name changing". This because it wouldn't be fair to the over 4 million paying players, many of whom probably regret their original name or are wanting something new, who were there before the disclaimer.
However, if it turns out that implmenting name changing would not be possible, then this disclaimer needs to be put in at the account creation screen, but ONLY if in-game name changing could not be possible.
There should be a limit though, like only being able to change your name once in a x amount of days.
This is a very good suggestion. This would somewhat prevent name changing at a ridiculous speed. Possibly a 7 day limit before having the abiliy to change your in-game name again. However, I'm not sure how much harder it would be to implement this kind of restriction system, but as someone else suggested, companies like Steam may do this, I'm not sure because I don't use Steam often. So if Mojang could implement this, that would be excellent, but circumstances may not allow for it depending how they would go about implementing this kind of system.
There are more reasons not to implement it than there are to do it.
In regards to emerald95 who mentioned Runescape, that update ****ed up my entire friends list, especially with the people who think changing their names every 30 days is cute. It wasn't a good update, it was poorly planned.
If it is to be implemented, it'd be a one time only feature, possibly a pay feature to prevent 10 million users trying to get a "rare" name or taking up the better usernames.
Seeing as this is one of the only negative (or strongly negative) comments, I'll reply directly. In Minecraft, we don't have friends lists. And if we ever did, the friend could be listed by their account name, not their in-game name. I play this game called "Ace of Spades"(yes, it is relevant). It's like Minecraft, but with guns and less creepers. The game is very simplistic in nature, and the creator allows users to go into the game's files and change a default username to what they want their name to be in chat and in game. However, they have a permanent account name; as is what I am suggesting here, in Minecraft. Issues are rarely caused, and only the trolls use the over-used names.
I suppose I want to make two points related to this. First, the one-time-only and pay-to-do thing just would not be worth it. It would be easier to go and buy another account as Minecraft's name system currently is if that were the case. Second, on the username rarities. If someone has an account with a "rare" name, such as "Player" or "Creeper", they would retain that name as their account name. Even if 30 other people made their name "Creeper", there would only be one true "Creeper". And in my own experience, I see that people often want a unique username instead of one bound to be often used.
If that didn't convince you and the others out there sharing your opinion, that is good and well; thank you for the feedback.
Also, this is what could be considered a bump to this post. Continue commenting and reviewing, everyone, and thanks.
I have been doing a lot of SP for a month now. I made a TNT cannon and fired into bedrock bowls full of piggy targets spawned from eggs, a few pixel art models, blew more stuff up, and made a Nordic arctic city of which I have placed little citizens in (foreveralone.png). Multiplayer just got really boring...maybe just depressing because the past 6 servers I have played in have died out.
Not that easy. I'm approximately 80 percent sure the /nick feature is a mod. Also, it: 1.) does not usually work all the time, or at least has not often worked in my case, and 2.) does not change the name players see above your head in white lettering.
And Notch had originally said "will be implemented in the future" regarding name changes in the old Help section, but the new one seems to state that this will not happen whatsoever. Which is the main point of this thread, questioning why not use a method such as this? Oddly enough I have seen this method of username changing becoming more well-known, but it seems username changes are still out of the question for many.
A fee would not be a good idea for name changes, nor a limit. Well, maybe they would work, but though I feel a feature like this is important, it is not important enough to pay money for; the reason I don't buy a new account with a new username.
Thank you to all who replied and to those who (might) continue to reply. Continue giving criticism, support, and feedback, and we can see what the community thinks of this feature, and if it is supported, maybe it can be implemented in the near future.
Hello anyone who reads this. I was looking through the Help section today (changing my accounts' email) and checked the "can I change my username" section (or however that is phrased) along the way. I saw the Mojang has seemed to have firmly stated username changes will not, and by the way it was phrased, not ever be implemented. What I want to know is, why?
Before anyone starts throwing it out there that changing one's username would cause turmoil, especially with mods and in multiplayer servers, I know. The mods and server whitelists, et cetera, would be obliterated by this because they recognize usernames and base server information on them. However, I've seen quite a few posts suggesting Mojang go about username changing by making users have a log-in account name, like the ones they used to register their accounts originally, then having an in-game username that could be changed by delving into the Minecraft files.
If you don't understand how that would work or how it would operate, here's an example.
Let's take me, for example, and my account name. I would log in to the website/launcher with "Omega1396", as we do now. However, let's say I wanted my name in-game to be "Jimbo". I would go into my .minecraft files, find the file containing a default username that could be changed (e.g. "Steve"), and by typing in "Jimbo" where "Steve" was, my in-game name would now appear to be "Jimbo".
Multiplayer servers would still list me as Omega1396, and if I wanted to be whitelisted, the name Omega1396 would go into the whitelist, not Jimbo. This allows servers to recognize me as usual, whether my name be Jimbo, Frankfurter, BillyBob, or any other screen name.
I don't know how hard this would be to implement into Minecraft's current multiplayer system. However, I have seen many other games, some similar to Minecraft, implement this method of usernames and still retain proper multiplayer without hassle.
So I suppose my actual question, instead of "why?", is "why not?" Why not implement a feature such as this? It seems to me that this would not be a hard addition to make, it would and should not affect current multiplayer, and from how often I see this suggestion, would please many players. And even those not wanting a username change could easily keep their own username.
Maybe this is harder than it sounds and would cause more problems than it would seem. After all, I am no tech-specialist and have no knowledge of Java, C++, or anything along the lines of how Minecraft works. But, if you, the reader, happen to have this knowledge, or maybe you just have an opinion on this subject, point out things. Criticize. Show everyone else why this wouldn't work, or why it would.
Thanks for reading. If you didn't read the entire thing out of laziness or if I am just a tedious typer (very possible), just at least try and find the jist of what I'm getting at here before posting.
All feedback related to this would be much appreciated.
EDIT: Due to a multitude of suggestions related to this, it seems that some sort of identification method would be required for this to function effectively and without confusion. If possible, a system should be added where when "Tab" is pressed in a multiplayer server, bringing up the player list, players' account names would be shown in parentheses next to their changeable in-game name.
E.g., If I were to bring up "Tab" in a multiplayer server, I would see my name as "Jimbo(Omega1396)", but in chat and above my head as seen by other players, I would appear as "Jimbo". This would prevent trolling and confusion of who is who due to changes in one's username.
As the description states, this appears to be the proper place to post this question, being that it is mod-related, but I am unsure. If I need to post this elsewhere, please alert me.
Okay, so I am officially a one-year veteran(woot!). I have been playing Minecraft since Beta 1.2. Recently Minecraft has seemed...too advanced. I don't like the fustercluck of the available materials, the new dimensions, the mob additions and changes; I feel like I want the old Minecraft back, or at least available to me, the classic dungeons, blocky rooftops, flat-nosed pigs, and the old environments.
And so, are there any mods currently available that would replicate the mid-Beta era as best as possible? Something replicating directly 1.2 or soon after 1.2 would be excellent, if possible. I just want to dumb-down Minecraft, haha.
I completely understand and agree with that but I'm just a sucker for MG42's. It's a beautiful weapon and I want one badly.
On another topic: The ACR is quite impressive, I love the ability to switch calibers on the fly, plus I've seen a guy completely submerged one in mud and it worked like a charm, almost like an AK does.
I used to like the ACR, but I dislike it currently because it seems to have "borrowed" quite a few things, the most upsetting to me being the G36/M416 gas operation system. Other than that, it is indeed an impressive weapon.
