Reminds me of what I found when I tried to go to the corner of the infinite map. I got similar results but it was floating in the sky over another landmass.
In the current version of Minecraft biomes, you occasionally get patches of random snow, and it looks weird with snow suddenly starting in a set line.
Notch already has a system in place that he could use to make this work better, but he hasn't used it. (Maybe he plans to idk)
Take a look a grass colors, there is one for each biome, all formed into a gradient to smooth the transitions. A simple solution would to make the grass be white in snowy biomes, making it looks like grass with frost/little snow on it. We all know when it begins to snow it doesn't start with a half foot of snow, so this would look much better.
All Notch needs to do after this is make snow form further in the center of the biome. I think it would work best if it was probability based, that way there is no set-in-stone line where the snow begins deepen.
Perhaps there could be multiple levels of snow height as well? (Like water)

You have hundreds of rotting dead pigs walking around, half of them are burning or already burnt.
You have flying giant jellyfish with some liquid seeping out of their eyes
And if that glowing block is sulfur, you get to smell rotten egg **** as well.
