Screw strip mining. Unless you like having huge, ugly, artificial chasms in your maps, I think it's useless.

Now that I have maps, I go to the far south-east corner of one of my maps with my home at the center of the map, then I build a little mining station over my mine entrance and dig diagonally down untill I hit a cave, or I start off in a direction 4 blocks up from bedrock. I find caves and start searching. If I exhaust a cave, I listen for mobs, and if I find any I start digging for them to find neighboring caves. Rinse and repeat. I am able to get huge amounts of iron, and the occasional creeper to fill my stock of sulphur enough to make lots of TNT. I then use the TNT to make my main shaft bigger and more decorative.

Red mushrooms, they have absolutely 0 use.

Except for mushroom soup, which I use regularly, as I run into both varieties of mushrooms occasionally in caves, so when I go look at my mushroom chest and see I have both, I use them in soup and have an instant almost-refilled health by only changing my habits a tiny bit.

for example, a company releases a food product that contains posion. the customers need the food product fixed, but the company answers: "it takes time to do such things. stop being so impatient. we will do it when we like to." you see where im getting at?

Good god this analogy is terrible. You realize that this is a BETA and thus HASN'T BEEN RELEASED. Plus, in no way is the game "poison". It's not like it breaks your computer, it just has minor bugs that hardly harm anyone's enjoyment unless they expect a beta to be flawless.

A proper analogy would be a food company allowing people to assist in developing a food product, and it still tastes bad, so the people testing it complain that they haven't gotten it to taste good yet.

HURRRR it's not out yet you morons, the food is still in development! Complain when it's released, not 7 months before.

Do you mean the sprite limit? Or does Minecraft restrict how many ghosts can be near your computer at once? Spellcheck would really help here.

A limit to the number of mods you use... NO!
Assuming he does mean the sprite limit, that's not what it does. The way it limits mods is that there can only be a limited number of item types, so if you have Mod A that adds a bunch of food and Mod B that adds a bunch of tools, you may go over the limit.

And I'm in favor of expanding it as well, but I think there are technical reasons for it's existence, relating to how item data is stored.

    Yay for contradicting yourself.
It is limiting the number of mods you use, if he is talking about the sprite limit, by placing a max number of sprites that can be in the game. It's a roundabout method, but it does limit the number of mods you can use.

    Where is a contradiction there?

The primary drawback would be how the game deals with naturally formed 8th blocks?

When you break them what happens?
Do they go into your inventory as a stack of 8th blocks?
Do they go into some sort of meta inventory until you have enough to make a full block that is then placed in your inventory?

What additional resource (memory/cpu) overhead would it represent?

How would the lighting engine have to be changed (this should happen anyhow)?
Because now your dealing with many thousands of extra faces to change when the light level changes(globally).

    Fluid dynamics?
Yes 8th blocks would improve fluid dynamics if they treated everything as a fraction of a whole blocks but that adds a bulk of new calculations into the mix.

8th blocks be they player crafted or globally generated both have merit but to be feasible on a large scale there must be serious overhaulage.

The technical details you describe are part of why I suggested it as a potential sequel idea. This sort of idea would likely only be feasible in about 3-4 years, so I didn't think anyone would be interested in something that would push Minecraft's release back 3 years :tongue.gif:

    Either way... wait...

Frankly, I don't see why there is a problem with talking about this now. I mean, I would love it if I could see what Minecraft looked like with all it's blocks 1/8th their current size. A hill, instead of looking like this (turn your head sideways:

I'd also like to say that this is less of something I want support for and more of something that I'd like to see a discussion about the pros and cons of. Now that we all understand what I mean, I'd like to hear if there are any drawbacks to this idea that can't be overcome.

TMN, You are hopeless. That's why I suggested it as a sequel-only idea, because that way it would not effect Minecraft in any way.

And it's my fault that my first post wasn't clear, but it's your fault that you didn't understand after this far into the thread.

I noticed the sequel part, but you refuted it very early on.

Don't suggest sequel ideas until AT LEAST the game is released.

I didn't refute the sequel part, I refuted the idea that this thread was merely about suggestion a sequel. Such a thread would be like "I like minecraft, it should ahve a sequel". This is more "This idea couldn't possibly fit into the current game because of technological and time constraints, but would be at home in a sequel".

It's like if 3/4ths through development of DOOM I suggested that the game use 3D models instead of sprites. It would be fine in a sequel, but could not have been implemented in the first game, especially that late in development.

No, because it wouldn't effect Minecraft if it were implemented.

It's not simply a natural version of it. The 8th block thread is about having both large and small blocks together. I am suggestion a natural evolution of the block size to a smaller size.

So after X time... all the blocks become 8th'd?

    ...

Wow. Dude, I'm not talking about the blocks becoming smaller over time. I don't even know how you thought that. I'm talking about the blocks being smaller in size from the very beginning.

You know what? When I get home, I am going to delete/close this thread and make a new one with visual aid, since it seems like that's the only way people like TMN will be able to understand.

Nazzer - Look, man, its a lost case. You mentioned 8 blocks and the thread is 8TH blocks, theres no difference and what? All blocks breaking into tiny ones? Isnt this what you're suggesting in the first place?

And did you know that some things also break into multiple items that are craftable into a block?

I'm not talking about that either. I'm talkin about the blocks being smaller, not simply breaking into smaller pieces. I admit that my initial post wasnt' incredibly clear, allow me to elaborate.

Imagine that all blocks are the following size:

    :log: :log:
    :log: :log:

My suggestion is that they instead be this size:

    :log:

This means having terrain with a "higher resolution", and buldings that have more detail.

All the blocks are 3D so would it be 1/8 the size?

In which case it's a natural version of the 8th block thread.

AND... all of your ideas can be made with 8th blocks

You still don't get it. Read the thread again, you just don't get the difference between HAVING SOME smaller blocks and ALL BLOCKS being smaller. It's pitiful, really.

And I just did a search for the term "8th blocks" again, even though I already knew that "blocks" would be excluded, and guess what? I couldn't find a thread suggesting that the grid on which blocks are sized being smaller. It may very well exist all the way back in the days of indev or creative mode, but your suggestion of a search term did not bring it up.

    8th blocks

I am going to direct you to the rest of the thread to see why you are completely incorrect here, because my suggestion is not "craftable 8th blocks", it is "a smaller block grid size".

I'm getting curious: What is the likelyhood of Notch making a sequel to minecraft in the future that has blocks that are 1/2 the size of the current ones? Pickaxes would destroy a group of 8 blocks, the player would be 4 blocks high instead of 2, and terrain and structures would appear to be more detailed.

Also.. you 1/2 idea is in the game.

    Mathematical error, I meant 1/8th.
