iampeppino posted a message on see mojang does know what they are doingthe toggle fog key has been put back in.this just goes to show mojang is smarter than most people give them credit for. they made a mistake and then realized it and quickly fixed if like i said this was probably just a mistake by the team because they didnt realize how important the key was to so many players. i knew they wouldnt keep a change that makes the game unplayable for so many of their loyal players. good work notch and jeb. i can now say i 100% love the 1.8 update and all its changes.Posted in: 1.8 Update Discussion -

Hans_Lemurson posted a message on Hans Lemurson Explains: The D Flip-FlopThe D-Flip-Flop, or "Data" Flip-Flop is the fundamental unit of computer memory systems. It is a device which lets you automatically store values in a place where they can be accessed later. The "Flip-Flop" part of its name refers to how the memory cell at its core can switch between two different stable states, much like a flat rock that gets flipped over (only without the rock).Posted in: Redstone Discussion and Mechanisms
"Data Flip-Flop" can be abbreviated to "DFF" for ease of typing.
Overview:
A DFF contains 2 Inputs and 1 Output:
-The "Data Input" delivers information to the device that may or may not be stored.
(Commonly represented by the letter D)
-The "Enable" Input which causes the Data to be written to memory. Also commonly called the "Clock" input, but I find this misleading.
(Represented by the letter E (or C in some diagrams)).
-Lastly, the "Output" displays whatever value was last stored in the memory.
(Represented commonly by the letter Q. (Don't ask.))
However, although its usage is fairly straightforward to understand (E makes D->Q), the manner of building such a device and its internal operation are rather mysterious to many people.
I intend to correct this using the POWER OF COLORED WOOL!!! I will be showing you a fairly basic DFF design with all it's different components color-coded for your convenience. It's not the most compact design, but I chose it because it's easy to actually see what's going on.
Is the Memory Cell itself. It is an "RS NOR Latch", or "SR Latch" or "SR Flip-Flop". "SR" stands for "Set-Reset", referring to how data is entered into it. Its great strength is how small and compact it can be. Its great weakness is that it requires 2 different inputs in order to operate. :angry.gif:
Fixes that problem. It holds a pair of torches which are always in the opposite state of one another. One acts as the "Set" input for the SR Latch, and the other acts as the "Reset" input. But most importantly, they themselves can be controlled by a single input. Unfortunately, this component also has a critical weakness: It writes to memory all the time, since at least one of the torches is on at any given time. An SR Latch by itself is a stable memory cell, but once you add the Orange torch-pair it's continually buffeted by the winds of change. Solution: Add another component. That'll fix things for sure!
Holds a carefully positioned torch which when ON, will shut-off both of the Orange Torches. While the Purple torch is ON, the Latch can rest in peace. Torch ON = Hold, Torch OFF = Write. Given this functionality, it is unsurprising that the Enable input controls this torch directly.
Fortunately for you the Reader, I have included pictures to better illustrate what I'm talking about.
Behold the screenshot!
Here we see a DFF with 2 inputs and an output.
On the left, connected to Purple is the "Enable" input.
See how the torch is causing both Orange-torches to be shut off. No data is getting into the Latch so long as that torch is on.
Activate the D Input...and nothing?
The "Data Input" in the middle has just been turned on. The Purple torch is still suppressing any and all Writing, so the little output wire on the right is still off. So long as it remains active, the fluctuations of the D Input will be ignored.
Open the gates and unleash the flood!
The "Enable" input on the Left has just been turned ON, causing the suppressing torch to deactivate. Now the value from the "Data" input is feeding directly into the Latch, causing the Output to turn ON just like the "Data Input" is.
What goes in, comes out.
The "Data Input" has been turned OFF, and the Output follows suit. This is what happens when "Enable" is ON.
D Flip-Flops can take many different forms, but operate under the same principles.
Here is a "Vertical" (one block wide) DFF built using the same color-coding scheme as before (but with some additional colors to reduce ambiguity). Green represents the "Data Input" which although it feeds into the Orange torch-pair, needs to be treated as a separate component. Similarly, Teal is the "Output" which although it simply displays the data from the Latch, some more advanced designs (those used in RAM) require that you be able to turn off the output without corrupting its Data.
In this picture, the "Data Input" is ON, but since "Enable" is OFF, the Output remains unaffected.
So...any questions?

Mojango posted a message on Inventing the [square] WheelThere have been several posts that immediately discarded this idea because wheels are round. Surely this means there are several readers who have done likewise but not commented. I implore you to read the entire post and open this post by saying this: The wheel would only be round in the inventory. Any model showing a wheel would have that wheel be square.Posted in: Suggestions
If you still are not convinced, redpine has brought up quite the valid point. Snowballs, slimeballs, ghastballs, and records are all circular! :tongue.gif:
I think Minecraft is missing two important things. A way to carry more items and an alternate source of string. My proposed solution for these problems comes in a circular form.
Yes a wheel! It would not take much resources but would then be used in other crafting recipes, like the following.
I imagine the wheelbarrow would look similar to this:
Ahaha! Yes a square wheel. XD I think it would look both awesome and hilarious, especially when it begins to spin. Anyhow, the wheelbarrow would be a vehicle controlled much like a boat. You would have the option to hold shift to pivot the wheelbarrow about on a fixed axis. While manning the wheelbarrow you would not be able to jump, that means anywhere you want to use a wheelbarrow must be accessible via stairs, half-blocks, or just plain old flat ground.
You would also not be able to craft while using a wheelbarrow, your hands are full. Instead you would see this:
Using the wheel you would also be able to make a Spinning Wheel!
I picture something similar to this being placed like any other block:
This would finally give a use to wool and allow players to make string. The Spinning Wheel would only work while you are interacting with it and would convert one block of wool to nine pieces of string. Right clicking on the Spinning wheel would give you a screen like the next picture. Several people have posted that they feel 9 string is way too many to be receiving from one piece of wool. Many have also posted that they think the player should not be able to make string at all. The number is variable and ultimately would be the choice of Notch. There has been a suggestion I would like to mention however. Mystify has suggested that there be a division made between string and spider silk. Depending on which you used it would alter the quality of the item in the same way that a diamond sword is better than a wooden sword.
Problems?
"I am not comfortable with circles..." Don't worry, its only like that in the inventory. Any model in game would have a square shaped wheel :biggrin.gif:
"This changes the whole value of string. It is supposed to be difficult to get. Players have to hunt down spiders for it. It makes a bow very valuable." Alright lets examine this for a second. Minecraft is based more or less on real life. String is a very very basic commodity. Ancient civilizations made it all the time. You do not have to kill a deer and rip out its tendons to make string, though that is a viable option. People have been making lashings for millenniums. Now for the second part of that. A Spinning Wheel still requires a string to make it, so a player will have had to kill some spiders to get it. String becomes a much more easily obtained resource, but you do still need to have killed a spider or two to get it. Happy?
"Now wait a minute! What is a player to do with all the string that will suddenly become available to him?" This is the part I like. String suddenly becomes as common and an item as wood, and could become as crucial, leaving Notch plenty of room to expand the tech-tree of crafting. I know many players have really been wanting to see ropes. Players could create a loom to convert string into cloth; and from there? Sails, bags, more decor like clothing, curtains, rugs.
"This still leaves the players with a lot of string and not much to do with it. How do you propose to fix that?" Simple, Redstone. Redstone is an endgame item that has incredible uses. If you have the resources to acquire redstone, you are going to have the resources to make string. Now many of you are not going to like this, but hear me out. Redstone in dust form can no longer be used as wire. Instead, players will actually make wire. With increased discussion on this topic, I think having dust and wire coexist would be the preferable choice.
"Are you mad?! Why would you compound the cost of redstone?! It will break all my existing machines too! Burn him!" No no no no, Perhaps we can leave the dust as an option. I do not like that idea as much but its not my call. My suggestion is that all redstone 'wire' that is already placed will become the new redstone wire. "Ha, but that is similar to giving players hundreds of strings." Yes well, they would have had the strings before if the Spinning Wheel had been implemented earlier. "I am still not convinced. Why make redstone more difficult to use?" Ah, now we come to the exciting part. The new redstone wire, would be wire, not dust. In this way you could put wire on walls and ceilings! :biggrin.gif: I love this idea. It means a lot of work for Notch, but hey, its his job isn't it?
"Why would I make a wheelbarrow when I can make a minecart and put a chest in it. Geez! This is already in the game." No its not! I should smack you people! Minecarts take iron, and the tracks take even more. Not only that but if you wish to travel with your goods, it takes another cart and likely another propulsion system... or you could use the glitch to have them propel each other.. but that would take twice as much track, and therefor iron! This is not a minecart copy! Comparing the two is ridiculous. Stop the ridiculousness. Stop it now.
Any more questions? Ridicule? Comments? Concerns?
Also! If we ever want this to reach the eyes of we are going to have to make this thread well known. If you are reading this and like the idea of it, post something! Even if it is as simple as.
"I think this would be a great addition to the game. Please add this Notch!"
Try to keep the thread alive!
Also! ...again. I made a little banner. If you could put it in your signature it would help spread knowledge, and hopefully support, about the wheel in Minecraft.

Because this would only take half as much iron since you get TWO links per iron (+ coal)

The fact you didn't notice it wasn't in 1.3 makes me think it isn't important.
Especially since it seems everyone on this thread (including me) except you noticed it.
@Epicness, if something changes, someone has to complain about it, it's like a rule of nature.

EDIT: It is true that Minecraft is in "official" release but did anyone really expect that to change anything? The reason for calling 1.0.0 an official release was, obviously, a strictly business move to get people that don't want to buy a game in beta to buy the game.

Here it is in a spoiler

Might I point out that the website you are referencing is assuming that the conditions when the bible was written are the same as today. For example, it asks how polar bears got to the middle east across the oceans. What about Pangea? (when all of the land was one huge continent, then split apart) "WHAT YOU THINK PANGEA WAS REAL!!! THAT'S EVOLUTION THEORIES", not really, Pangea could very well of existed, the worldwide flood would have had a huge impact on the geology of the earth, forcing the current continents to separate rapidly. Anyway, why couldn't God just have the Polar bears show up, it isn't like He couldn't do that.
The first one on the list is another good point of biblical mangling this website uses, the one about trees being made before Adam and then later the bible saying trees came after Adam. ACTUALLY the bible does say trees were made before Adam, and then God planted a garden and grew trees in that garden, he didn't make the trees in chapter 2, he just planted trees in the garden of eden, your website is misquoting the bible.
Another one is where they say that the snake that talked Eve into taking a fruit from the tree of good and evil couldn't talk because it was snake. Seriously, their reason for saying it is a contradiction is "A talking snake, enough said" BUT it wasn't REALLY a talking snake, it was Satan/a demon DISGUISED as a snake, it even says that just a few verses before the one your 'thinking atheist' site quotes.
Any other contradictions are because of misunderstanding or a messed up translation from Hebrew/Greek into English.
For the 'bible atrocities' part, God did not tell Job to do what he did (just go to the website to clarify) and then congratulate him for it, Job sinned when he did that, but God FORGAVE Job. Everybody sins, and a lie is just as bad a sin as murder (flame war coming), at least according to Christianity, the reason for this is that telling a lie is a sin, murdering someone is a sin, both mean we aren't perfect, and if we aren't perfect was go to Hell. God forgives and that is why Job was forgiven for what he did.
That above is enough I think (I didn't read the whole website page) to cover most of those 'bible atrocities', I hate to say it but your website you keep quoting has an agenda (as everyone does, but that website more-so) and they are distorting the facts, taking only bits and pieces to make it seem like the bible is wrong.
I am not trying to bash atheists, just this website. It is so obviously distorting the bible, I doubt anything on that website is reliable, and I would suggest you stop using it as 'evidence'.

I suggest that, for at least glowstone and Jack -o- lanterns, the item frame will emit the same light as those blocks would, and possibly for the two torches as well.

They are not going to release an update without new features, anyway, Dinnerbone is just their AI person, he is payed to come up with new features (and I assume bug-fix those features he makes) he is not the person that does bug-fixes, Mojang has other people to work on the bugs so Dinnerbone adding new features doesn't really impact the bug-fixing.

Good grief, really, it isn't even running a true server, it is only a server that people on your LAN can join IF you let them. PLUS it is just having the server CODE control all the game logic, it isn't actually running a server program, and since the 'server' is on your same computer there is NO (very important) server lag, it takes no more time to process anything with this merge than before, they just removed the processing code from the client code and just have the client run server code for handling all the processing stuff.
At least learn what the merge did before complaining about it...
