Well, OP didn't specify whether this on creative or survival, so... TNT CANNON! Bring down a mountain, or make DIY ravines! The possibilities are endless. For extra :Diamond: 's, design your own cannon, rather than getting a design off Youtube.

If you're playing SMP, then chances are that someone beat you to the netherwart. If that's the case (and it probably is) then they should be willing to give you some netherwart, as they've probably established a farm of some sort. Even if they don't want to just give it away, you should be able to trade with them. Otherwise, this is some really dodgy SMP glitch I've never heard of.

I realise that this is impractical, but if you happened to spawn near a ravine, you should have iron already (if not, find a cave). Ravines tend to go deep, as do most other caves, so this would work with them, but what you could do is find some redstone and make a compass. Combine said compass with some paper, and you'd get a map. Now, the reason I mention this is that you could systematically search the entire area in that map, and thereby establish that you haven't missed any due to a careless oversight. The next thing would be to increase the size of the map (see the wiki's map page for more info) and start to cover more and more ground. This seems to be the easiest way of finding sheep without getting lost and without needless backtracking. Again, I realise that this is probably impractical, but if you were lucky enough to have easy access to redstone (happened to me on my last four worlds) then this would be worth a try. Either way, Good Luck :) and have fun in survival!

I know that this has been said to death, but I miss the days when you actually had to mine for resources, instead of finding a cave on the surface and following it down to find gold, iron, obsidian, diamond, emerald and anything else you might possibly need. Furthermore, the sheer size of these caves means that even if you try to use the old-school branch mining method, odds are you will run into half a dozen caves larger than the goddamn biomes on the surface without even trying. The other day, I started a new world and had a full set of iron armor on my second day, along with enough redstone to fill a swimming pool. Don't get me wrong, the later versions are so much better than alpha/beta, but I miss not falling through a random hole in the ground and finding myself swimming with diamonds. Even though ravines are one of the coolest things in Minecraft, they have the annoying tendency to link up to a mammoth cave system that will lead you so far that if you attempted the trek home on the surface, you'd get lost or have to duel an army of monsters. Basically, the old system rewarded those dedicated enough to search for diamond; the new one rewards everyone. To me, diamonds have lost their near mythical status, and have simply become just another ore to grab before heading home. Sorry about the rant, but I had to get that off my chest.

I like the new cave system, Before finding diamonds was merely a matter of digging in long rows over and over. It was more rewarding to repeat the same process of digging in straight lines over and over rather then getting off your rear and actually exploring for once. Yes, you can still rely on the tried and tested method of strip mining, but you now have an equally rewarding option of underground exploration. If you get lost in tunnels then you are obviously not pacing yourself. Find an area you hope will be worth exploring, then block it off from the rest and get done with it. If you want a home underground then expect to do some terraforming because guess what, Notch actually decided to balance the benefits of that mobproof-twofeetfromyourmine-base you love so much. Notch did not intend for Minecraft to be a mindless, block breaking game stereotypically portrayed being played only by OCD autists. Yes, ravines and mines need to be made less glitchy and more respectful of their fellow landforms, but getting rid of their now endless depths is just a huge step backward.

The problem is that we cannot rely on strip mining. With the epic sized caves, odds are that by the time you hit the level where you can find diamond (<16), you will have already hit a cave system. And regardless, even if you did hit the prerequisite level, you'd run into a ravine or cave whichever way you dug. And the caves are so big that you can't just start a parallel tunnel 10 blocks over, you're still going to hit it. Because of this, strip mining just got nerfed.

The most logical way to find diamonds now is just to explore caves near bedrock and hope for the best. I am not saying that ravines and mines should be taken out of the game, there should be a limit to how far they go. Getting rid of their endless depths is not a step backward, it's a refinement, making the system better and more fun for a wider audience.

I had this epic mountain in my world. I wanted to empty a bucket of lava @ the highest point to guide me back home. I legged it down the mountain with lava chasing me. I took a wrong turn and found myself at a dead end. The lava was fast approaching, and there was no way out because I had kind of fallen into a pit. I pulled out my shovel, turning to dig a hide out, when I eventually found a hole. I entered the hole and looked around. It turns out, the hole lead to a cave thing that had formed when two mountains had been kind of fused during the world generation. Heading in, I figured that the mobs inside would be easier to kill than the lava so I opened fire with my bow, killing all the skeletons and zombies with ease. By this time, a couple of spiders caught up to me. I jumped and struck with my sword, scoring easy critical hits and killing them. Unfortunately, I hadn't gathered much flint, and was running low on arrows after I had collected the skeleton arrows. I moved quickly, shooting at the lone Enderman. I hate their skinny figures. I missed repeatedly before he closed the gap and I killed him with my sword. I heard the distinctive hiss of a creeper. I backed off, loosing an arrow at the creeper. It hit, and I legged it. Unfortunately, I ran two close to the lava fall. I turned, cornered, and raised my bow and fired. Out of arrows. Desperate, I pulled out my sword and gobbled down a porkchop to top up my hunger bar. I cut down the creeper and sighed in relief. Another hiss. I panicked, squealing with fright. I spammed the LMB, missing each time. And then... The creeper blew. I flew into the lava flow. I had survived the explosion, BUT THE BLOODY CREEPER THREW ME INTO THE LAVA FALL.

Or, to put in another way, I got hugged by a creeper who convinced me two swim in lava.

I spawned literally above a mine. After 37 minutes of exploring up, digging down for furnaces and some weapons and tools, I explored after I got some food as well.
... I WAS DOWN THERE FOR SEVEN HOURS before I was *mostly* done exploring it o_o.

I have school holidays, so I am @ a loose end. I spent at least 14 hours in my system, and I just found ANOTHER massive system. Seriously, wtf?

There IS too much food in the world. Seriously, I go out for 1 day (minecraft) and come back with enough food to keep my hunger bar full for at least 3 days irl. But that's a topic for another thread.

I have a love-hate relationship with these new epic cave systems. I love them because there are so many ways to mess around, but it makes it practically impossible to build anything underground. First, let me tell you my story:

I began a new world in 1.8.1, immediately setting out to create a base in a mountain, just to recreate that old sense of discovery from my early days. I saw a natural cave in a mountain, so I headed into it, wooden blade in hand. Luckily, there were no mobs yet and there was plenty of coal. The cave opening was near the top of one of those epic mountains that is above block 100. heading down to sea level to make a more accessible door, I saw another tunnel branching off. I sealed it with glass and then put a door in so that I could mine it at night. I eventually got down into the cave system, where a nightmare encountered my eyes.

A ravine. I kitted myself out with torches, weapons and whatnot before heading into the ravine. I headed to one end where I found a branching cave system. Heading to the other end, I found a abandoned mine shaft. After a close call with a cave spider, I headed back into my base and set up a quarry. Digging down, I eventually hit this almost circular room. There were two exits from the room. I fought off the Endermen by emptying a bucket of water on the floor, then headed down one of the passages, which lead to a monolithic ravine. On one side of the ravine, (side, not end) there were a dozen caves that opened into the ravine itself. I explored these caves and found a passage up I ignored it, and went to an end of the ravine, where I found 3 ravines congregating at point.

Long story short, I explored the majority of those passages, and both of the cave systems linked together. In the end, I explored the abandoned Mine shaft. Surprise Surprise, It led into another MASSIVE network of caves.

As I said before, I both love and hate these cave systems.

I love them because I got so much loot that I completely filled a double chest with coal, iron and redstone. By the end of the exploration to date, I found 19 diamonds. The battles during the exploration where quite hectic and bloody, and to my eternal pride, I did not die :biggrin.gif:. It was also a golden opportunity to mess around with critical hits and the new bow and arrow system. I think that my survival was, in large part, due to the new health system. But that's a topic for another thread.

I hate them because they have literally made it impossible for me to build an efficient mining hub down near layer 16. It sucks, I'd normally have at least a stack of diamonds by this time in my world. Furthermore, I can't build my habitual mob grinder because of the mass of caves undermining the ENTIRE FREAKING SUBCONTINENT. SERIOUSLY. WHAT THE HELL? It is ridiculous how expansive these systems are. They're fun to explore, don't get me wrong, but they are a pain to build around. I normally end up with a well constructed system of rooms and passages that lead down to bedrock, but NOW, with the big, fancy ADVENTURE update, ADVENTURE seems to be the only thing you can do underground.

I do enjoy the caves, I really do, but I seriously feel that the expansive nature of these new systems wreackes havoc with people who want to, you know, settle down. On the plus side, I can now ADVENTURE at night, but I still feel that these caves are just TOO DAMNED BIG.

    Just my two cents.

posted a message on I really hate the hunger system
I disagree. The new hunger system means that you can't just carry around a few porkchops to heal yourself. It enhances the survival aspect of survival mode. If you want to build an epic castle in the sky, then maybe you should play creative. That is the whole point of creative mode. This is survival mode, the whole point of which is to make it a constant challenge to survive.

However, thats not to say that your argument is invalid, it just goes to show that whatever Notch/Jeb/Whomever does, there is always going to be debate as to the outcome. In some cases, the entire community will unite against an update, like they did in the Halloween update when mobs could spawn underground at increasing light levels. Remember that? Odds are, there will be some outcry which will force Notch to reevaluate the hunger system. Who knows, it might even be removed in the 1.10 update. But until then, live with it. Creating posts like this is most likely not going to help in anyway, considering the famous lack of interest Notch tends to show in these posts. Also, I quite like the fact that you can starve away half your health by not eating. It's quite fun on our PVP server when people are too stupid to eat before they go into battle.

But in conclusion, hunger system is here and it is doubtful that it will be edited in the near future. Creating topics like these in no way influences Notch, they just push valid topics to the back of the line, meaning that in many cases, those people never get answers to their questions. For Christ's sake, use your brain before you create a topic; Think to yourself, will people give a damn. Yes. Is it a controversial issue? Definetly. Will creating this topic in anyway affect whether the hunger bar is removed? The overwhelming odds say that it won't. So please, only create a topic regarding these updates if its an issue that genuinely needs attention, not just to vent your petty problems on the internet.
