For those of you who want an extra challenge in the game, you can try to put yoruself in a high-risk siutation and survive.
In this case, you are going to tempt greifers. So this needs to be on a SMP server, preferably one with a shady reputation.
First, go minig for a while, and get a nice pile of resources, esp diamond.
Make weapons and armour
make the resources into blocks
put the blocks in the middle of a feild
and then the challenge:
make sure no one steals them
You can attack the would be theifs, set up traps, and whatever otehr defenses you feel like, just as long as the resources you are protecting are clearly visible. You should also position yourself relatively near spawn, so the greifers can easily find you.
You lose when greifers steal/destroy yoru resources.
I actually just took a screen shot and palet shifted it as a whole. The terrain itself might look something like that, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the items. It depends on how it is coded to determine if I want to figure out recoloring handles of tools based on the wood they are made from. probably not though, since that could get really complex.
I was mainly testing to see if the color changing method I wanted to use would give good results.
I want to see if I can make the color shifts dynamic, which would make it so you could use a texture pack with the mod, and have prettier alien landscapes. However, there are some issues with that plan. For one, ores. it is easy to shift the color of the stone and leave the ores in it unchanges with the default textures. That is not nessecarily as simple on a texture pack.
Its withing the last few pages. People kept adding old designs after we finished. A lot of the discussion was about really, really edge cases, involving people logging in and out multiple times and other oddness.
I like the mod(at least in theory, I haven't tried it yet), and I don't mind you explaining it, but I find the tone of the posts very offputting. It feels like you are trying to sell me something, in kinda a scammy way. The first time I saw one of those posts I thought it was spam-bot at first, then I realized it acutally made sense. Esp. with all the random bold text and links everywhere.
And I'm not opposed to long posts with detailed information. I tend to make those all the time. Its just the tone and formattign ends up being offputting. At least to me.
Has anybody thought about a portal inside the vault that is normally unlit, but when a code is entered, it will automatically light, allowing entry via the Nether?
I think bread is fine. It's just as easy, if easier, to punch a pig; plus with all the new meats Jeb is adding, it's only going to be easier to get food. And mushrooms have the same get-one-set-forever way, you just need two kinds.
But the persistant animals will offset the extra sources of meat. if you kill all the pigs nearby, they won't respawn, at least not very quickly, and you won't be able to rely on wild pigs as a long-term food source. you would need to breed your pigs to make them into a reliable source of food.Having beef makes it so there are more food options, but cows will also be limited.
I personally would go for 2 pickaxes and a sword, with one left over. I personally think iron is fine for axes and shovels, unless you are clearing a lot of land or farming a lot of trees. Even then, iron should be sufficient. While diamond axes are much faster, you don't really need that much wood. Shovels are faster than iron, but in my opinon, I think iron is fast enough.
On the other hand, mining with diamond can really speed things up, for both ore collection and cobble collection. As for swords, it's much easier to fight with diamond, as you can kill most mobs with only 2 hits.
True, but it is fairly easy to have enough diamond income that spending it all on picks and swords will not use it fast enough, so diamond axes and shovels become convienent since it is faster, and over their lifespan save you a fair bit of iron that would otherwise be spent on tools. Since iron has more widespread uses, the extra iron is useful.
The game can only support 16 light levels without exceeding technical bounds. The lighting mechanic is to drop off the light level as you go outwards. You would have to alter the base principle of the light system to extend light out further, since you would need a drop in lighting level after traveling multiple blocks, instead of having at least 1 dropoff in each block.
th only benefitt of a diamond hoe is number of uses. mass producin stone hoes is just as effective, and much, much cheaper. Hence, spending diamonds on it is silly.
and note blocks don't need diamonds, record players do.
diamond armour is not even remotely worth it. If you are rolling in diamonds, go for it, but it is better to use something cheap like iron and swap it out if it get moderately damaged.
you are right, diamond sword and pick are in order. With this few diamonds, it may be worth holding onto them as spares if you lose/use up your sword or pick. If you do want tools, an axe and shovel will round out your set and take up the 4 diamonds. diamond hoe is silly and you can skip it.
The entire food dynamic is being altered for 1.8. How precisely and what impact that will have is unclear, but I would wait for that before deciding it needs changed.
I'm with everyone who says to start with vanilla. starting out with mods is like being served a dish, and dumping ketchup on it before even tasting it. sure, ketchup may improve it, but how do you know until you ahve tasted it first? Maybe you like it plain, or decide it needs vinager. Maybe you like it plain, but find it awful with ketchup. You need to try to base game before adding things to it, or you will not know what you should add, if anything.
Peaceful has it's place. There are plenty of people who will attest that they like exploring and finding resources, even if they don't want to deal with hostile mobs.

That is our current design.
