Prepare for disappointment. You got to play on big servers for free before because some idiots liked to pay for features. Servers can't charge for those anymore, so they'll be charging for something else instead. IMHO fewer people will pay for cosmetics*. So it will have to be access itself.
People paying for features was what subsidized your freeloading self having access to the server. Without them, you get to pay up or go away. Enjoy!

Guild Wars 2's item mall begs to differ, friend. Everywhere I go I see people paying for cosmetic upgrades with real money instead of the gold/gems currency exchange, just because they love the game and want to see more content added to it. So if a player on a server really does love the server they play on, they'll donate just to see it stick around. If you donate for any other reason you're doing it wrong, and for the wrong reasons.

If you build it up right a scare of any sort can startle or scare any player. Having any sort of attachment to the main character is also a plus. If you don't care about the person you're playing as, you don't care what happens to them, which leads to the player not being scared for the character.

This guy has it right. But I can offer some advice; try Amazon, it's got a lot of cheap PC parts and complete packages, all refurbished (some new). It's where I'm planning to get my new gaming laptop, and it's only $457.00. It's got everything I need to run today's games.

The worst for me was GTA Vice City. Although it was a huge upgrade from GTA 3 I still found myself hating Vice City. It tried too hard (IMO, again) to be GTA 3 instead of its own game, and the Miami Vice style of art didn't get to me as much as the hard inner city of GTA 3 or the tough immigrant life of GTA IV.

I'm also vaguely reminded of a local video rental store called AJ Video that used to rent out all kinds of games before they started doing movies only. I'd always get N64 and PS2 games there during my weekends and summer breaks. But after all of that, I have to say that I enjoy living in this day and age more than I did back then. Everything is so convenient and the games are just as good, provided you look in the right place.
Also, Quake Live.

Pretty much this. I've been using the internet since I was nine (1999) and all the websites I signed up for my mom did for me, I just used her e-mail information.

That's where most of the servers post their topics and IPs, and they get pretty good responses. You could also try Planet Minecraft as well.

Pretty much sums it up right there. Skyrim has a boatload of mods that spice up the experience on top of the core game, and Dark Souls is a difficult challenge with an interesting multiplayer aspect.

A good way to actually get players on your server is to advertise subtly. A banner in your signature, constant updates and player welcomes on your forum post and communication with your playerbase are key. Try to offer some sort of reward program for players that get other players on the server, something like a special title or something to keep them wanting to come back for more.
That's all I have to suggest. Good luck with your server!

Yeah, it's a bummer. But hey, there's always the next chance.
