Maybe I don't get it. But I already play on a specific server. I log in to it from my home desktop and from my laptop when I am not home. What exactly is Microsoft offering that is new??? Confused.

But I agree somewhat ... some sort of monetizing has to happen to turn that $2.5B into a profit machine. One time fees to buy a game, with free lifetime updates are rare these days. MS is here to make money, end of story. How they accomplish that with MC is anyone's guess. -

why would they? minecraft is making a ton of money not just via the regular sales, but also by merchandise like those dolls and crap. You can expect them to pull off a "facebook buys oculus rift". People scream, company keeps things the same and months later nobody cares
It's not very often that large corporations keep things the same. If MS plans to break even in a year, I have to wonder how. Is MC really bringing in the kind of bank roll??? I would imagine we will see MS thumping the skulls of modders in the near future with their license agreements and cease orders. Or they'll buy up those mods and the rights to them and that will eventually shut down the mod community and open the doors to PAID dlc and addons. Battlefield and COD come to mind .... same thing happened with those communities. They used to have a large mod following. Now it's all paid dlc and addons. It was never about money for Notch and the team. But for MS, it's all about the money and market share. They aren't in business as a hobby, or for the love of the game. -
Sep 15, 2014MrPyle posted a message on [Official] Microsoft has Bought Mojang and a message from Notch. One other thing I have to ponder about here. Let's take a look at the past .... I know many of you are a lot younger than me. And you probably have no idea what I am referring to. Call of duty, Battlefield .... those two names in particular. Who remembers, way back, when the mod community was huge?? Tons of mods out there, endless maps, hours upon hours of playability and free content. And then what happened?? Their respective studios sought to make more and more money. They essentially killed the mod community. And now we rely on mostly DLC packs, which we have to BUY, in order to enjoy new content within a game we already paid for. You take something that big, that seems almost unstoppable, and you lock it down and squeeze every dollar you can out of it with addons and dlc.Posted in: News
With a $2.5B investment .... I would have to say, we may just see the same in the future of MC. Lock it down, and force those that wish to continue playing, to purchase new content. Or continue playing the "old stuff". Microsoft, is a business .... in business to make money, more and more money. Mojang on the other hand, seemed (from the outside looking in), more community minded. -

Sep 15, 2014MrPyle posted a message on [Official] Microsoft has Bought Mojang and a message from Notch.People are going to hate on Microsoft. That's just the way it is. And Notch, sorry bud ... but lame story. I admire your success and I love this game ... but your reasoning for bowing out .... meh.Posted in: News
What really bothers me about this whole deal ... NOTHING is ever certain once Microsoft gets their hands on it. People could argue that nothing is ever certain anyway ... this is true. But with Microsoft, they don't exactly have a pristine track record for acquiring entities and being successful with them. Sure, they have had success with some things. But they have also shuttered their fare share of studios and technologies as well.
Companies with very deep pockets, that spend more time buying up technology, instead of creating their own and succeeding at it, is what concerns me. Only time will tell. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best though :-) -

Quick question ...
Wyvern pick-axe.... how can I turn off the tool tip that floats in the center of the screen when the pick-axe is in use???? I searched through the menus, checked my controls. Or is it not something that can be turned off?

Mic? Yea ... but I mostly play while at work, so voice comms is out for me, unless I am playing outside of work, then it's TS.
Haven't played FTB in a while ... last server I was on, only lasted a month. Looking for a cool group to play with.
Free time? People have free time? ... um ... aside from work ... I've been spending my time rebuilding an old truck :-)

The thing people are flipping out about, is Microsoft's track record. Sure they are brilliant. You don't become one of the largest companies on the planet with a bunch of idiots lol. You invest ... you innovate ... you buy up (and sometimes steal) technologies to improve your market share. Some of those technologies will advance under MS. Some will get shuttered simply to get them out of the way of their own ideas.
What's in question here ... why? And what are their intentions? At this point .... for everyone ... it is a waiting game to see what happens.
MS, for as long as it has been around ... has its haters and supporters. Nothing new there.

What happens to Herobrine?????? No one is asking about Herobrine!!

Yea, I've had the avatar for quite a while. Don't recall where I got it.
I fully expect to see the same DLC concept to be in all versions. I mean, why not?? That's bank to be made!!
Gone are the days of buying a $30 game and getting a lifetime of enjoyment out of it. IMHO, most top shelf games these days, only last about a year ... before the next installment arrives. With an all new base purchase, followed by DLC and addons. Call of Duty comes to mind. Many here are probably not old enough to remember the early days of such games. Battlefield included. Buy the game ... and find endless amounts of content available for free through the modding community. Today .... buy the base game, the rest comes at a price. And next year, the cycle starts again with a new release in the series and all new DLC to buy. Not to mention, renting servers from authorized providers now.
There's no reason for MC not to follow suite in the hands of MS. They would certainly lose some players, who will abandon it. Other who can't afford it or who's parents won't fork out the dough. But they will also gain new players alike. As huge as MC is at this point ... it's not going to die off.

The xBox version already employs this model. Texture packs, skins, avatar items ... all for a fee. With minimal freebies here and there. What does that mean for the future of MC?? Get your wallets out.
Mojang I think was mostly in it for the love of the game and community. Microsoft ... loves money.

What are you looking for in a server? I've played on many servers, currently run two of my own. Most servers, the player(s) tend to dwindle until only a couple regularly play. I would prefer a dedicated group of players that are on regularly. I tend to play during the day while at work and sometimes nights/weekends.
What do you expect from a nearly perfect minecraft server? Chill people, without thieves, available admins to correct problems quickly
Tell us a bit about yourself: former truck driver, turned computer tech in 2001 ... father of two and divorced .. car enthusiast (current camaro owner) and part time smarta$$ :-) Reside north of Atlanta, GA ... and, donating a few slots a month is no prob for me

About me? Male, 40 ... live near Atlanta, Ga. I currently operate two servers of my own, but choose not to play on them. One is vanilla, the other is FTB. I'm interested in playing either. Prefer no PVP.
So what ya got?

I have a few spots left for anyone interested. And will be reviewing the list, checking for those that have not been active. So if you haven't been active but still wish to remain, just let me know.
