I just noticed that the light smoothing is not complete:
    (image)
The shading on water is currently not smoothed. Are you planning on adding this in the future, or is there a limitation preventing you from doing this? I couldn't find anything by searching this topic since the term 'water' is considered to be 'too common', so forgive me if this has been addressed before.

I want to fix it. I think it happens because water blocks have their own renderer so it's just a case of patching another function. I *think*.

Hmm, does this mean if you found that function that you could also modify things like the water's transparency depending on if it's near the edge or in a larger body of water?

    Probably! Should I try?

Edit: ooh, that looks like a fun function. OK. Fix the blocky light on water first, play with transparancy later.

Hey,I know this'd never work but... Could it work on classic too?

It *could* but I'm not going to do it.... a lot of effort (decompiling ANOTHER version of the code, with a lot of difference to the current tree) for little gain (not many people using it)

Ray tracing? Wow, if only :smile.gif:

Notch's code (vastly simplifying): How light is this block?
Paint all the corners of the block that lightness.

My code (vastly simplifying): How light is this block and all the surrounding blocks?
Paint each corner of the block the average of the four blocks that surround that corner.

There's more to it, but that's the main better light code. AO happens because the light level of a solid block is 0 so it darkens those corners. The rest is plumbing.

Little question; how do you take the patch away?

On its own? You can't. You have to revert to the backup that the patcher saved earlier. Or easier, just delete "version" in .minecraft/bin and let Minecraft pull down a bunch of new, clean files (but that will get rid of any other mods you've added though).

Just a little update - testing mod compatibility at the moment and it seems like my mod is compatible already with FastRender (as long as you put FastRender in first). Also, the next version of the patcher (Monday? When Notch updates.) will detect and work with FancyPack (again, if you patch FancyPack in first).

Thanks for the help, DB. Just got back from Starbucks and there - coincidence! - I'd added something to the patching process that warns you in the output window if your output is not called minecraft.jar and in the bin directory. Should help clear up these little confusions.

Thoughts on depth of field with Minecraft? Possibly another addition to MrMMods? (btw, looks great with hd textures and betterlight.

    First thought: :ohmy.gif:

I knew the day that someone did this was coming, although I never thought I'd see it before Notch open-sourced the code. I'm conflicted because this probably spells the beginning of the end for my mods, which would be better implemented as shaders anyway. On the other hand, I'm as excited as heck that someone's come out and done a proper GLSL backend. I don't know how he's done it, but this is an awesome day for Minecraft.

Edit: I just watched Cryect's torch video, and I guess it always did look like this.

I was just messing around with a flat texture (which I haven't used since before beta)... I don't recall the shading ever looking like this. This is applied to a fresh .jar.

It's always looked like this (kinda). Let me draw on it.

The pink lines there are the underlying triangles that make up the geometry. I'm making the corners of those triangles different colours, and letting OpenGL smooth shade it... but it looks kinda goofy along the seams, especially when you get the diagonal lines going the wrong way, IMHO, but that's just what Minecraft's cube model looks like.

Back when it was AO and not BetterLight I think the maximum difference in brightness from one corner to another was about 27%, wheras this is closer to 50%, and where it's stronger you see the artifacts more. I agree, it does look ugly in those situations... I'll tweak it at some point, but I have other changes in mind and I don't want to change something I'm going to rip out anyway. Good eye though, well spotted :smile.gif:

I have a problem, everytime I install my texture pack with xau's HD fixer it removes your mod. When ever I install your mod it removed my texture. I can't seem to get them both up at the same time. What do I do?

Xau's patcher and mine - what they do is add something to whatever you put in the input and spit it out as the output. I know I always say "start from a clean minecraft.jar" because for most people, that's what you want to do, and I suspect that's what you're doing. But in this case you want to take whatever one of them outputs and use that for the input for the other.

Think of it like the original minecraft.jar is the cards on the table in a poker game, and me and Xau have our two different hands, and when we add them to the cards on the table you get two different hands. What you should be doing is as if we put our hands together and made one kick-ass hand to beat someone else's. Actually, that's a crap analogy.

OK, problems since the last post. This is why posting logs is helpful to diagnose.

    I run the patcher using the run.bat workaround for windows 7 x64. Select Betterlight (v 2.0 ? )
    Patching to: C:\Users\S080510\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\minecraft.jar
Start minecraft, open my map, nothing looks different..

User error. For your output you've got it patching to minecraft.jar in .minecraft, rather than in .minecraft/bin. So its patching correctly, but minecraft's not loading your patched jar.

    Patching class: bi (bi.class)
javassist.CannotCompileException: [source error] a(float, float, float) not found in java.lang.String
This is the message in the log window. (Note this is performed on a fresh Minecraft.jar after the thorough uninstall you listed.) The download stops at 6%-7%.

User error. That's a ridiculously old version of the patcher. Patchers only work with the version of minecraft they were created for - it says this on the patcher itself. Latest version's in the OP.

Ok. Im on a Mac. Java is up to date.

Well I can't get the pic to go into the post.

But all the log window says is:

    Patching to: /Users/beavers_blake/Library/Application Support/minecraft/bin/minecraft

    And then is stops responding.
    Hope this helps.

Not sure, but possible user error: it should be patching to minecraft.jar. I'd check the input as well to make sure that you've selected minecraft.jar for that too.

by unzip you mean extract right, and every time i tryto open any of the .zip files, they say they are in an unknown format, or they are broken, please can someone help! :iapprove: of the look of it, but i would actualy LIKE TO HAVE IT!

    I don't understand the question.

I'm on a Mac and I can't seem to get this to work. Is it only working on Snow Leapord, or MacOSX 10.6? Because I have 10.5.6 because it's too expensive to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard.

Wrong version of Mac Java (thanks Steve Jobs!) Update to the latest version if you can, but I think there's a problem with running an up to date version of Java on the old Macs. Someone posted a workaround somewhere in the thread I think.

Hi there MrMessiah! I was just wondering if you could somehow incorporate this into your patcher? viewtopic.php?f=25&t=123503

I'm not going to incorporate it into the patcher but I'm working on making my patcher compatible with his mod, and also FancyPack, which currently breaks for the same reason.

OK new version of patcher going well. Autofills the input and output more reliably, doesn't break on slashes so much and autosaves incremental backups
